Fate/Zero is the prequel to Fate/Stay Night. However, if you did not like Fate/Stay Night, you should still consider watching Fate/Zero. The second season of Fate/Zero has more battles, while the first season has more dialogue, but both seasons are very good.
Fate/Zero is the story of the Fourth Holy Grail War. This is a war for the Holy Grail that can grant any wish. The contestants summon heroes from the past to fight for them. Who will win? (That's for you to watch and find out.) There are only 25 episodes, but the first episode (only) is about 40 minutes long, so it's the length of two episodes.
Animation: A+++++++++++++
The animation for Fate/Zero is simply amazing, stunning, every good word possible. I was totally not expecting something this great, considering my experience with Fate/Stay Night. The clear animation is a great combination with the epic battle scenes to create a mind-blowing series. Keep in mind, the animators do use a bit of CG for some characters. My only problem with the animation is that the CG could have been blended in to the normal animation better.
Characters: A
Fate/Zero has every type of character imaginable, whether it be the strong type, the cool type, the arrogant type, etc. The characters are very likable and are explained better than in Fate/Stay Night. Also, the background of the main characters in Fate/Stay Night are explained in Fate/Zero, so that you know how they became who they are in Fate/Stay Night. This anime does go into the point of view of each of the contestants so well and deep that you are not quite sure who will win in the end.
Music: A+
The music is superb. It boosts every emotion that was intended. I really liked the opening music for Season 2 and Season 1 as well, because they fit really well with the anime (if you listen closely to the lyrics). The ending is also good because is explains the background of some of the summoned heroes. I love how the heroes are all from the past, so we can relate to most of them. They have conflicting views on what it means to be a hero, a king, etc.
Storyline/Plot:A
The storyline is captivating, with plenty of battles and witty dialogue. If you delve even deeper, there are philosophical issues as well, like how much to sacrifice for this so called "justice", what is right and wrong, what it means to be a king, etc.
Overall: A+
This anime blew my mind. It made a lasting impression, and is definitely on my list of favorite anime of all time. Everything about it is great, and it definitely changed some of my opinions and views on characters in the sequel, Fate/Stay Night. I can honestly say that I loved this anime, all its episodes, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone and everyone.
