I was just like all other viewers that went into this show expecting some nice mecha action, the show did have very nice action, but then again, the conclusion to the show did not end with action, yet still the show was very solid and I enjoyed every episode of it.
The story to the show is we have earth, and once again it is over-run by these alien's called Phantom Beasts. There is this high school that focuses on both military training, and education. There is a guy named Hayami who is a average pilot, but once a new girl(Mai) joins the academy, and partners up with her he is motivated to become a more superior pilot, and at the same time taking his and Mai's relationship to another level.
The story is cliché, like alot of movies and shows that have aliens that have taken over Earth. Then we have the giant robots that fight the aliens. However this is not the actual story, this is just the excuse to add some action to the show. The show is all about the growing relationship of a boy and a girl, and some of the obstacles that come in their way. I thought that it was quite brilliant the way they made the "alien" story, like a disguise, and focusing more on the school life of these students, and the main female and male character's relationship. The ending can be disappointing to people, but that depends, if you are a action fan, then the ending can be a little disappointing, but if you are a romance fan then the ending is very satisfying. To me I kind of fit in the middle, I actually enjoyed the ending to the show, and left me with a very good feeling. It is good that this show was a 12 episode show, this show being 12 episodes, paced out the show quite well in my opinion. Story overall was great, and very enjoyable the way it folded out.
Characters to the show was my favourite. Mai's character was just a very admirable character. I love those type of characters where the female character may look strong by their facial expression, but they are actually starting to lighten up slowly, just because of the motivation of the male character. Her character was very well done, and I would think of her as my third favourite anime female character. She herself is very shy, and does not like expressing her feelings, but it was so fun for her anticipating the confessions of Hayami. Hayami himself I thought was dumb character, but in a good way. He is the character that the audience expect a lot from him, but they leave the audience quite disappointed because he instead does something stupid, but that is good, that kind of character is always fun to watch. I loved how Hayami's relationship with Mai grew stronger and stronger to the point that Mai did not care anymore of acting tough or strong. Characters overall was very enjoyable to watch, the development of the characters were quite well done, and the interaction and the relationship between the characters can come to be admiring.
The animation to the show I thought was pretty nice. The way the characters looked was great, even the facial expression they put on Mai when she is shy just looks awesome, by the way she just looks so nice when she leaves her hair untied-_-. The mecha action was quite well done, it was nice and fast paced. Too bad that the show lacked action, but for a show of this kind, this can be an exception. The environment looked pretty nice, the sun setting, rain, and snow was very well animated, and always fitted the mood.
The music to the show I thought was the downfall for the show. The opening theme to the show I thought was quite childish, and I don't like listening to childish music and songs. The background music was quite repetitive and can get quite annoying sometimes. The ending theme was decent I thought, but the rest sucked.
The show was very enjoyable to watch, it may not be for everyone, if you are romance fan then you can enjoy this show, if you are in the middle of romance and action, then you can still enjoy the show, if you are a mecha buff, then you won't exactly enjoy the show because of the lack of action, but still you can give it a try. Very enjoyable show, with great characters, and quite a nice plot, disappointing music but music category is not weighted as a very heavy category.
Final score a sexy 9/10=90%

If you expect a good mecha anime, then this anime is NOT for you. I repeat, it is NOT good for you because there are very few episodes of mecha actions in the anime. Most of them is only shown in the first 3 episodes and the rest are very rare. But, if you are looking for a mixture of romance and drama with a touch of mecha actions, then you are looking at the correct place because that is what this anime is about.
Character design are nicely drawn and portrayed into the screen. All are quite detailed and rarely any jerkiness. Overall, nice graphics and animation.
Storyline was quite OK, because there is drama involved so not really like hardcore romance like Saikano and Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. There is also a touch of comedy due to the fact that the lead male is quite dumb. Overall, quite nice and original storyline.
Sound is very good in terms of sound effect and themes. Sound effect of the mecha actions are very nice and fit correctly in most of the scenes. Even the background music really fits into the situation depicted on the screen. Opening and Ending themes are marvellous. Opening is Door of Truth and Ending is Beyond Darkness. Opening is very fast paced and motivational while ending is calming, slow and soothing. Overall, very nicely done sounds in the whole anime.
Overall, the anime may deceive anyone who looks for mecha genres, but if you are fans of drama and romance, this anime is one that you would not want to miss.

Hmm.. when I first read the reviews, I was in high spirits because I was short of these mecha-style anime... Watched the first 6 episodes and I wasn't disappointed... But the back 6 was left to be desired with...
But I was not truly dissappointed. The characters were very well potrayed. You can feel the coldness of Mai, the stupidity of Hayami, and the eagerness of their comrades to bring them together. I banged my fist against my friend's computer table, cause I was very irritated, thinking of why is he so "baka"... or laughing out loud, when a new plot of getting them together was planned... Or moved closed to tears because...
A very good anime, a bit disappoinment because there were not many action scenes... but was paid back by the interesting story... And don't forget to feel pity for Tanabe...
Score: 7

After the first episode, this looks like a highly action packed mecha show. There is more action for a few more episodes, but the emphasis goes from fighting to character interactions, and it proves to be about a boy and girl who fall in love, but won't admit it to each other, and the exploits of their classmates in their seemingly impossible quest to get them together.
I was kind of disappointed by this turn at first, but the lovable characters and their relationships to one another along with the really nice art and animation kept my attention, and I ended up enjoying it more then I thought I would.
It is kind of short, and there could have been more attention to action toward the end to balance it out more, but this was still rather enjoyable and I think it was worth the watch.
Although I was expecting something different, I was pleasantly surprised. So I give it a 7 out of 10

This is a pretty good anime that can be watched to fill the gaps in between your favourite fansub releases. I give it a 7 since at no time after watching an episode did I feel an urgent need to watch the next one (a criteria for getting 8 and above from me). I enjoyed it nevertheless. The story got serious at times and so I don't think it is suitable for the very young. The deaths of characters in their teens and the whole PBE activater thing were quite thought provoking.

I finally finished watching the last episode and I must say that it was quite enjoyable. I originally started watching it for the mech fights but after a few episodes, I forgot about them and got into some of the characters. The characters were as balanced as they could get considering how many there were and the length of the series.
A nice balance of comedy and romance with a touch of tragedy. Of anything, the comedy was what got me to keep watching until the last few episodes, especially that guy that kept popping up that was stalking that girl. All in all, a good series to watch with a cup of noodles and cheese sandwich ^.^

Like everyone else has mentioned this series tricks you into thinking that it's a war series but then changes into a love story. The characters in this anime are great, during the course of the series I found myself actually caring for the characters. The animation is also great, the mechas are nicely designed and so are the characters. There aren't nearly as many mecha battle scenes as you would expect from when you first start watching this series(I think there was only around 5 in all). The plot, which is a love story not a mecha war story, is decent.
Overall it was a good series, it wasn't anything great though, I give it a 7 out of 10.

This show initially gives the impression that it is a war series. We get thrown into battle pretty much immediately into the series. But after a couple episodes we see the characters and get to explore each of them more in depth. What's interesting about this series is each character has their own little quirks and some of the episodes play really well on that.
Eventually this series becomes the story about two people finding love during all the turmoil of war... in quite hilarious situations as they finally declare their love for each other...
A pretty good series and definitely worth watching if you're into romantic and/or high school comedies.

This show contained all the elements required for a good anime. It has the array of characters that can appeal to anyone, the mech background story (which is not the actual story people, in case that's what you think), and the humor. I caught myself laughing out loud with mouthfuls of food. Yep .. lotsa Bounty. Overall good character develpoment but a rushed ending.
Animation is good, especially the mech fights. I took off points because of the fact that they give you all this background on the spread of those monster things and after a few episodes, they're nothing more than some creatures that wander around and have to be shot only if they act disorderly. I recomend this to those that like romantic comedies.

A anime that focuses on romance during a war with its share of hilarious moments but quite a bit of drama and excellent characterization.
It tells the story of the 5121 Battalion, a group of teenagers that control giant mechas to fight against alien-like beings called "Genyuus". Most of the episodes, however, do not focus on the fighting at all, but on the interactions between the cast of characters living under constant reminders of death. Many of the episodes are basic stand alone high-school romance comedy stories, mostly concerning the two main characters. But in some of the episodes, they quickly turn from comedy to tragedy, and it's this setup that makes this anime unique even though most of the plot elements and characters aren't original at all (though it is reminescent of Full Metal Panic).
This anime does feature some dreary and dark colors, and it's sometimes hard to tell what's happening on screen, but the music and songs are good. Overall though it's an above average anime, though those looking for a clear plot, tons of action or something extremely original will be disappointed.
