'Banner of the Stars II' is the culmination of the love story that started with the original 'Crest of the Stars'. It is, in my opinion the best of the three series ( Crest, Banner, and Banner II ).

After the action and excitement of the battles in 'Banner', Lafiel and Jinto are compelled to be acting Viceroys over new systems as they are (re)conquered. Lafiel's distaste for these assignments puts her in a sour mood, putting Jinto off and their relationship seemingly on the rocks.

Having to take responsibility for a system which was nothing more than a penal colony with four warring factions ( guards, women, men, and neuters ), Jinto goes to the surface to iron things out. When things look like they are starting to work out, the Ahb force under Lafiel's command is ordered to temporarily retreat and one of the factions of prisoners revolts. Jinto is kidnapped and Lafiel is forced to leave him behind.

This is a heart wrenching tale of love versus duty liberally seasoned with interesting supporting characters and side stories.

The animation is good, but the CGI sometimes detracts from the feel that the older series ( hand drawn ) have. This was at a time when CGI was just coming on the scene and they had not yet worked out some of the obvious differences between computer and hand drawn parts. It does help, though, that this series was done in 16:9 screen ratio, giving this epic story a more epic look.

The music is the same as used throughout the series. The score is full and involving, but after so many episodes does get just a touch old. While not quite up to John Williams' standards, the OST is worth getting.

If you liked 'Crest of the Stars', if you like a good romance liberally sprinkled with intense drama and action, this is a must see.

Yet again it should be Banner of the Stars II or Battle Flag of the Stars II.
The battle of Aptic entirely described in Banner of the Stars is now finished but it is a costly victory in ships and people. Now the work of reconstruction has to be done even if there is still danger lurking from hidden ennemy fleets.
The whole cast is still here but it is more focused on Jinto and Lafiel and those in direct relationship with their deeds. Fortunately, the Abh admirals and Lafiel's father are still here but far less seen. Nonetheless, they still have the best lines in the anime.

It reminds a lot of Crest of the Stars for the too much attention given to Jinto and Lafiel. More over I might say that the situation is not really interesting, the side stories involving the other characters are better. Sometimes it is slightly annoying but they are enough (really) good scenes to make you forget them.
I feel that the art is not as good as in the second opus but it is my personnal point of view. The music is as good as ever.

I give 8 because I rather dislike the main plot except the part with Admiral Spoor's fleet which is quite sad. Whitout the rare appearances of my favorite characters, it would have been worse.
