An anime about a farm boy named Hideki who moves to the city for prep school in the not so distant future where there are seemingly human robots called persocoms. Even though persocoms are very helpful with everyday life, Hideki can't possibly afford one. It turns out he finds a persocom in the garbage that no one can readily identify, and the adventure begins from there.
The good:
I really liked the development of all of the characters. All of the characters slowly become more three dimensional as the story progresses.
One of the amazing things about this anime is that nearly each and every character is absolutely necessary to the story. There are not really any filler characters.
I really liked the dilemma between persocoms and humans. It makes a lot of conflict and makes you really look through the issues involved.
This anime has a decent sense of humor throughout. I wouldn't say it was hilarious the whole time, but the humor really helped the plot to progress.
-------------------------------
The bad:
Spoiler warning: Everything that I classify as bad is towards the end of the anime.
I really feel that Chi did not develop enough by the end of the story. She seems sort of stagnant to me from the middle to the end. Chi really did not seem more than a child to me by the end and it just made me feel like her character did not have the true artificial intelligence that I felt in other shows/movies. If she would have learned to speak properly like many of the less powerful persocoms could, it would have helped out a lot.
Another bad thing was when the villains showed up, they just appeared out of nowhere with no explanation. They seemed really sort of forced on the story and overall, they just seemed like sort of awkward characters.
Super Spoiler Warning!
The final bad thing was the ending. It just didn't sit right with me. I could not really feel the emotions coming out of the characters naturally. It just doesn't feel like it is late enough in the story for it to end yet to me. Chi just still feels like a child at the end. So much so that she still seems more like a little sister to Hideki rather than a lover.
----------------------------
I really don't know how to classify this anime. Something just made it not feel right. I loved it through the first 75%, but towards the end, it just lost me. Not that I quit watching, but it just did not feel right to me at all at the end. The anime was still very strong though. A solid 8/10.

In the beginning, this series feels like 'Pygmalion' if Professor Higgins was replaced by your inept and slightly perverted brother. However, as the story progresses, it ends up being very enjoyable.
Animation: The animation is well-done and consistent throughout the show. Chii especially is very prettily drawn, which adds a lot to her character. The backgrounds were alright, nothing too exciting. 8/10
Story: It's obvious that the producers of the show had a strong premise to work with. Unfortunately, the series didn't live up to that potential. There are more than a few episodes in the first half of the series that feel like filler, and although they occasionally help develop Chii and Hideki's relationship, these episodes can get boring. Fortunately, if you do end up sticking with the show, the latter half of the series borders on fantastic, especially the last three or four episodes. The reason that the storyline is very frustrating at times, is because it could have challenged itself to delve further into the complex relationship between humans and the machines that they create. 5/10
Characters: Hideki ends up becoming a very strong and likeable character by the end of the series, but in the beginning he appears to be like any other 'harem genre' main character. (Perverted but valiantly trying not to be and surrounded by temptation from all sides.) I appreciated his character development as the show progressed. Chii is kind of blah, but very cute in certain scenes, and her character also develops as her secrets are revealed towards the end of the series. The supporting cast is fairly standard, but also likeable. 9/10
Music: The background music is typical. It doesn't add or take away anything from the series. The opening theme is catchy and adorable, while the closing themes are standard. 7/10
Overall: The first half of 'Chobits' is kind of tedious to get through. It starts off with a few strong episodes, then gets lost for a while, then ends with a series of fantastic episodes. 7/10

Story - 8
Chobits is a heartfelt story with a female android staying in the apartment of a 19 year old student trying to get into college. It's about the connection between the humans and robots; which follows Chii's everyday adventures and is mostly a cute and ecchi story with some drama.
Animation - 8
Very nice animation, Chii is drawn very well to fit her role in the story.
Music - 7
Decent Music! Has a nice opening theme and good sound effects to go with the mood.
Characters - 9
Chobits has very lovable characters, especially Chii who is as cute as she can be and Hideki's interactions with her make the story humorous. Very nice character development, especially when they try to get along with each another.
Overall - 8
A good watch if you are into romantic comedies or dramas or anime with a cute main character.

Chobits really caught my attention from the very beginning. I absolutely adored the OP and couldn't wait once I had finished the first episode.
The story and characters are really well-conceived. Each has their own traits and personality and even the extremely robotic Chii had a charm that sucked me right in. The story had me laughing one episode, to almost driving me to the verge of tears. Yet this wasn't some emotional roller-coaster that drained you and that what made Chobits so watchable. A nicely balanced mix of romance and comedy with a touch a sci-fi that didn't detract from the main story.
The animation and music were great. Madhouse tend to do very good works in this department and it shows. I heard some criticisms about how it differed from CLAMP'S manga, but having not read it, I'm in no position to comment. As mentioned above, it had an incredibly catchy OP.
A very entertaining series that'll make most viewers happy (and sad in parts). I was quite happy with the way it ended. It's such a shame that everything has to end someday and Chobits is no exception.

I had read the manga of Chobits before I watched the anime series and from what I had heard about the anime, I had mixed expectations. The Chobits anime shocked me; it was much better than I had predicted it would be.
Timeplace: Early Future
Setting: Tokyo (and other area's around there)
Episodes: 27
Plot (10/10): The story starts out inviting you into the future, a world full of persocoms, or human computers. Hideki, the main character in the story, is a poor farm boy headed to prep-school in Tokyo. Having not seen much technology before, he is shocked and a little overwhelmed by it all. Of course, he wants a persocom but is too poor to afford one, already paying for his apartment, schooling, and other costs. He ends up finding an abandoned persocom in the trash, (although… the anime never gets around to telling you WHY she was in the trash, a little bit of a plot let down for me…). The persocom, Chii, has no data whatsoever, but has a learning program installed. Much of the anime deals with trying to teach Chii things about the real world, but the episodes can become repetitive. You begin to see the same "teach-Chii-a-lesson" pattern within the episodes. The ending, however, was rather sudden and quick, but powerful none the less. I'm not going to give anything away for you ^,~
Characters (8/10): The characters in Chobits each have their own unique story, whether it be the "teacher-student relationship", or dealing with humans falling in love with persocoms. Hideki, the main characters, is a good-natured student (a "nice guy", as they repeatedly call him), but he does have a large perverted side. Chii, the persocom, is easy to adore, simply due to her lack of common sense, although her repetitive attitude can become annoying. I believe some of the other main characters were underdeveloped, having been much deeper in the manga, including Minoru, Shimbo, and Yumi.
Animation (7/10): Nothing out of the ordinary, occasionally I really wanted to fix the teachers hair... 0.o
Music (9/10): The music was overall pleasing, a light note of modern jazz that really suited the anime. Every track was well placed in the anime, adding a lot to it. Although, I would not buy the soundtrack on its own.
Re-watch Value (10/10): Chobits is DEFINITELY an anime I could watch over and over, simply because it's funny ^,^. Although the episodes are repetitive in style, the constant (perverted) humor keeps the episodes light and easy to watch, not always deep and full of emotion.
Total Score (8/10): Chobits definitely rolled together nicely for me, it was light, humorous, and enjoyable, yet at the same time it portrayed deep, easy-to-understand themes. Although the anime was definitely lacking in "flow", it still turned out well. The ending was extremely touching, especially if you had watched the whole series. It's definitely worth watching all 27 episodes.

Yet another anime that has shown me that anime is not dead. When I finished watching this anime I was shocked that I had not heard of it sooner.
First, this anime was by far one of the funniest of all the anime that I have ever seen. The main character, Hideki, reminds us of every stupid, childish, and horny highschool kid we've ever met. He is exceptionally funny because he reminds people of how they were at his age, and if you are younger, what you are going to become.
Another great things about this anime is how the characters bounce of each other. Take Hideki and Shimbo for example. One is a reluctant rural ronnin who is ignorant, while the other is outgoing city-man who is technology savvy. You can tell right from the beginning that they are like water and oil, but for some reason they mix.
Overall, this is a great anime. It takes full advantage of crude humor, of brave idiots that just make a mess of things, and of geniuses who normally have to save the day

This is one of few animes that I never got bored while watching it.^_^
Story : Awesome storyline.I really liked the whole thing between humans & persocoms.Something different & still entretaining.
10/10
Characters : Chiii is sooo cute. Hideki's sooo funny, but I didn't like the teacher though. At the beginning the whole thing about Chii & Freya was confusing but at the end everything is explained. 9/10
Animation/Graphics :Really good graphics, beautiful. Hideki could have been hotter but ohhhh well!!! 10/10
Music :Nothing out of the ordinary. The theme song a little annoying! 7/10
Overall :It was a good choice to watch this,I recommend it a lot.I didn't cry much for this anime (surprised). The love story was really intense.Be aware of the Picture Book ^_^

I’ve read the Chobits manga before I watched this, and frankly I liked the manga better. It has more development and progression, unlike the anime which feels severely lacking in both. Chobits anime can be much better… I do not understand why they made it so bad…
Plot-wise…
A lot more screen time could have been spent on other characters, like Freya, Shimizu-sensei and Yumi-chan… their own side of story have so much to develop on (like how the manga did) but it just happen so short, wtf? I’m also pissed with the first few episodes, which loves to drrraaaaggg…
Story-wise…
Besides the dragging of the tempo, this anime also includes a lot of psychology and stuff… which seemed pretty unreal. Also it also tries too hard to explain everything in detail… boring…
There’s a lot of stupid stuff… a whole episode dedicated onto underwear? WTF?
Animation…
I’ll say it’s below average. Chi looks cute, but all the other characters look very bland. The colors used are also very bland.
Music & Sounds…
Nothing special. Chi’s voice is good considering she have to act pretty stupid, and so does Yumi’s and Yuzuki’s. I hate Hideki’s voice.
The opening was a little catchy, but I didn’t like any of the songs.
Overall…
It got really boring until the real plot begins, where there are more excitement and stuff. A lot of time wasted just for Hideki and Chi to stare at each other… This anime could have been a lot better, but it looks like they just took the story and did a anyhow version of the anime.

Storyline: 9/10
Chobits the animation is derived from the original manga by clamp, it features the persocom, Chii, and highschool grad, Hideki, the budding romance between them.
It may appear to be a mundane everyday story at first but the story has some mystery about the true nature of Chii that is revealed later on. The 'only thing that Chii can do' is different from that of the manga...hmm and people who have read the manga would find it interesting what the differece is.
In all, the story is interesting, a love story between a non-organic machine and a human, but if the story faithfully follows the manga in which the story is much well elaborated, I would had given it a 10/10.
Characters: 9/10
The development for all characters started slowly but picked up the pace at the middle of the series. This actually reduced the avaliable time for them to excel and I thought it would be better if more time be given to all the characters including Hideki and Chii.
Animation: 10/10
Clamp's unique long bodies and limbs are still there and what's there to dislike when Sumomo and Kotoko are so kawaii!
Music: 10/10
I really liked the opening 'Let me with you' and the ending "raison de etre', really nice songs.
Overall: 38/40 ( 95.0%)
This is one of the must watch anime from clamp and with a unique background coupled with a romantic drama, this is one serie not to be missed.

Hideki is a 18 year old who is trying to get to college. He went to a prep school in tokyo so that he could hopeful pass his college entrance exam on his 2nd try. As he was a farmer, he did not have a persocom and was very excited when he found Chi in the trash area. Knowing nothing about persocoms, he manages to get new friends to help and slowly begin his life with Chi.
Storyline/Plot: 10/10
This anime shows many different issues on the topic of love and does well in all of them. These stories were also designed in a way that it affects the decision of Hideki which i find it rather interesting. The development of the romance between Hideki and Chi was also a job well done. The story may be a little confusing at the beginning, however, with a little bit of thinking and you would find the inner meanings and true purpose of the plot. An excellent job!
Character development: 8/10
Hideki was very noisy with his yelling and he overreacted many times. This is rather annoying but it does show his personality. Chi is like a small child learning new things from Hideki, which shows the innocence of persocom. Chi's character was thus well made to emphasis the overall characteristics of persocom. The other characters also got plenty of time for character development which was quite good. However, more time should be given to Chi and Hideki.
Animation/Graphics: 10/10
The charaters were well drawn and quite typical compared to the other works from Clamp. Chi's hair was extremely well defined, making Chi look very pretty and cute. Sumomo was also very cutely drawn. The overall animation quality was great.
Musics/Songs: 9/10
"Katakoto no Koi (duet ver.)" by Rie Tanaka and Tomokazu Sugita in the last epidsode was very nice. "Let Me Be With You" by ROUND TABLE feat. Nino was also a great song which is very suitable for Chobits as a opening song. The two ending songs were good too. The background musics that were present throughout the anime were also well composed.
Overall: 10/10
This is a very sweet and touching romance story with bits and pieces of comedy added to spice things up. The story maybe a little complex at the begining but nonetheless a good one. If you have read the manga of Chobits, you would probably have a better understanding and enjoy the anime even more.
Chobits is a wonderful anime and I recommend it to all who love this genre.

Finally got around to finishing this anime, and I have to say that I feel satisfied some how...
The story has a rather colorful beginning. Instantly you can understand whats going on and where the story is leading you. I hate it when you have to wait a few episodes to see if you will understand the story and also if you'll like the anime or not... with this you can tell by the first episode if you will be interested or not.. most likely you will be ;)
The animation for this show is quite pleasant, as is the music. Opening song was alright but I liked the ending far more. The dub for this anime was quite good too.. well to my liking anyways. :D
Through a lot of the laughter, this show does tackle a few serious themes as well. I suppose you could even put this under the genre of mystery, since you are given lots of clues about whats to come. There are a lot of characters and as soon as you think you know them, well you'll discover a new side to them.
All in all a very fun and worth while anime to watch. Like I said before.. I was quite happy with the ending.. and I'm sure most of you will have fun with this one... :)

Surfing for a good anime to watch made me come across Chobits numerous times. All the ratings seem to state that it was something worth to watch, but after actually watching it I can say that it is way overated and an utter disappointment.
Story
Nothing special. The idea of the story where there are robots and human androids is actually quite old. I found it very unoriginal and plain. The story had the the pace of molasses. Then, with a desperate rush to finish the story, they crammed the important parts into the last four or five episodes. The beginging had potential for a story that might have gone pretty well, keeping in mind that it used the android idea. They ruined it with the nonsense episodes that ran from about episode three to twenty. 2/10
Characters
First time I actually hated characters in a long time. The characters seemed to all develop around the protagonist. I wondered "shouldn't it be the main character developing instead of everyone around him?". The main character (Hideki) showed no signs of improvement. Hideki seemed to zone out many times and rant about nothing which also made me find him annoying. There also seemed to be a pedofile theme going on between characters. The couple between a teacher and a student and also the baker and the highschool student. Bringing me to a conclusion that a love story revolved around the main characters rather than inside them. The only thing that I did like about the characters were the cuteness factors. It applies for Chi and Sumomo. 3/10
Music
Almost the only thing that I actually enjoyed throughout the anime. It seemed to suit the anime like a sock. 8/10
Overall
Like I said before, this story was an complete disappointment. The story moved very slow and the characters were annoying. I can tell you that this is something one doesn't want to see in an anime. The things that earned this anime a 3 would have to be the cuteness of Chi and Sumomo, the weak essence of comedy, and the music. I wouldn't recommend this anime to people who find their time valuable. 3/10

I picked up this anime in response to the universally high ratings that you see across the net for it. However, I would have to say that it was highly overrated (in my opinion).
I give this anime a 5. Why?
Because of the premise of the story, and how they handled it. Honestly, the whole story/debate about whether robot/android/mechanized whatever can become human is way overdone. Chobits was not one of the first to bring up this idea (think more like Pinocchio). I did not find its approach unique or all that interesting, and would rather watch Data (Star Trek) or Blade Runner. I didn't really find Chobits to bring up any new ideas or arguments on that issue, so I found the plot/ideas lacking. This anime was heavily focused on a plot/story and really was a disappointment to me.
There were other negatives also: Slow pace of main story, weak love story, and annoying main character. I say a weak love story due to Chi being so child-like and immature. You got to see her grow throughout the anime, but I felt it was a 2->12 age growth, and hence a woman's love is not developed. Also, the guy was pretty immature, and I don't know if he really grew, or just ran out of options. Last, Hideki (main guy lead) just rants in his mind for several minutes of a show = fine for manga, bad for anime, felt like nails on a chalkboard. In fact, I used the original sound track so I didn't have to listen to it in English.
This anime did have some pros, Music (great themes), animation (a softer, more articulate touch), and cuteness of half of the characters (the main char. Chi and a side char. Sumomo), but they just weren't enough.

No wonder this anime was one of the top in 2002, it is one of the best romance animes I have ever seen. The story goes into many aspects of the characters lives, and do explain many things. The anime has great character design, I mean why else would they have the number 1 spot in best anime girls 2002 (under community, then random things).
Besides the romantic part, this story is also very entertaining and might even make you laugh for days. Like the "Underwear episode". The music is above average, not the best but close. I would recommend this anime, not for only romance, but also for comedy.

I am ridiculously grateful to my friend who recommended this series to me. The anime or the manga alone wouldn't get this in my top spot, but together they drew me in like no anime ever had before. First off, this and Escaflowne are the only two that have ever made me completely impatient for school to end so I could watch more. Chobits in particular drew my emotions in as much as His Dark Materials (believe me, I NEVER expected that to happen again). The love story is just so...lovable, and so are all the characters. This is one of the animes where something like Ranma would make the female characters really shallow when they have nothing better to do, but Chobits doesn't (they don't call everyone perverts and accuse them of looking at them funny or whatever), and they instead have incredibly well-developed personalities. Some people hate the ending, but if you understand fully what happens it's the perfect way to end (as in not IDEAL, but both realistic and fitting). The only gripes I have about the series whatsoever are problems with either the manga or anime individually as far as explaining or emphasizing certain areas of the series, but together they covered absolutely everything. Just watch the anime first, read the manga, and then watch the anime again for the full effect.
