If you’ve seen any of the Love Hina OVAs, you pretty much know what to expect from this. This movie is dressed up with improved artwork and sound, but it’s filler, and it’s sad to see the characters get reduced to paper-thin imitations of themselves. It’s also like the Simpsons Movie because supporting characters constantly get inserted into cameos that go nowhere.

The beginning of this film consists completely of exact scenes from the series with only minor alterations. It then plods on with filler events (love interest troubles, characters thinking back on the series, and background information on the new character) until the match. Turns out the new guy is one-dimensional. He’s a genius and really wants to beat Makunouchi. That’s it.

Then the match starts. Badly. I hated in the series how every match started with Ippo getting psyched out for five minutes before he would think of something inspiring and finally fight. Same thing happens here, though it’s worse, because this is a full-length movie and I expected something less formulaic.

The rest of the match is mediocre. It has a few moments, but it also acknowledges flat out that its sequence of finishing moves is taken directly from the last fight of the series. The love interest drama abruptly resolves, and then credits.

It’s obvious that the makers mailed it in on this one.

Wow, the animation was noticeably different from the TV series. Noticeably better!

This movie was excellent. It left a touching conclusion without giving too much, but leaving some things up to your imagination. Can't say this is a stand alone though. Not too many characters are forced on you, but even with the small amount of characters, they're not really introduced. It's kind of expected for you to know what has happened. Of course, watching this will be more enjoyable if you've watched the TV series.

Loved the laughs. They had a good amount of jokes that were memorable. I really enjoyed the frequent teasing of Ippo's love. And the lovey-lovey scenes. This missed out on the flaring nose accompanied by the funny sound effect though. Those scenes well repeated, but I still find them funny every time.

The coach's voice still sounds funny to me. It seems that the voice actor is trying so hard to yell, but his voice is almost restrained. It's a bunch of air coming out, but no sound. Ippo was the same ol' loveable Ippo, but in the ring, he seemed out of character. His opponent was tough, but he still lost will quickly. Makes me wonder how accurate the effects of those punches and jabs are.

The movie encompases all the good elements of the TV series perfectly. It's inspiring, entertaining, and funny.

Hajime no Ippo: Champion Road is a well-done movie, a logical extension of the series itself. I really can't find too many flaws with it except that in my own personal taste, this single movie was far less than the series deserved.

The entire movie, plot and all, feels like a six-episode extension of the series. It follows Ippo's first match after the end of the series, against the former Junior Featherweight champion, trained by one of Kamogawa's old rivals. There's a little side focus on Kumi, as you would expect there to be.

There's really nothing wrong about this movie, but my mind keeps screaming for a fourth season of the series itself. Miyata is still just there, nothing's being done with him. There's absolutely zero focus on the world title, with Ippo or Takamura. Dante's still just gone, and I really would like to see Ippo challenge the world and get a rematch with him.

But that's just me; it's still a great watch if you've seen the entire series, and I can't logically expect them to handle any of these issues with a simple 90 minutes, so I can't grade down for that.

Sorry, no verdict this time. Just a simple 10/10 for being a good six extra episodes of the series.

The Hajime no Ippo movie is a pretty well done extension of the series, but I think it relies on the show a little too much to acheive full effect. Honestly, I'm hard pressed to even think about this as separate from the show. Still, it's not perfect because the doctor that Ippo fights seems a bit generic. I expected a little more considering the movie had a pretty long time to develop him, but I didn't see more than a carbon copy of Ippo with medical aspirations. Some of the opponents from the series were much more memorable.

The rest is just as good as the series though, in terms of animation, music, and smooth plot. I certainly felt disappointed with the romance scene, but they clearly don't want to shift the focus of the anime. All in all, Champion Road is very memorable, and adds a nice finishing touch to the show.

The movie was just as impressive as the anime series. They followed a golden rule:

Champion Road is a great continuation to the amazing series! So great that the time passed in what seemed like an instant - it was over before I realized it had begun. It's wicked to see HNI in its full glory without any still shots, just beautifully animated all-out action, combined with a bit of character development and some hilarious jokes.
The few problems I had with the TV series, such as overdramatizing, etc. are not present here, which makes HNI even more enjoyable...
Actually I don't think that Ippo's fight against the challenger was the most exciting one so far, but it was well done so that doesn't really matter.
Anyway, Champion Road is another nice glimpse into Ippo's journey and his troubles and growth as a champion. However I think that HNI really needs to continue with its TV run. Specials and OVAs are nice but they are way too short bites of the manga's greatness. It definitely deserves to be adapted all the way, especially considering how much better it is than current favorites in the fighting genre (like Naruto) and all sports animes altogether. Whatever happens, I just hope that HNI anime won't succumb to crappiness like other shows which continued their runs as OVAs (Love Hina comes to mind).

It just keeps getting better doesnt it? (for those new to Hajime no Ippo please read the series review, this is the first OVA). The art work and color has gotten much better and what else, its time for love again. It has a lot of solid plots, with a really inspiring theme. Besides the action (unlike most other animes, this is about boxing) it sure is great to see those folks especially TAKAMURA (Lord of Perverts) back again. Animes don't get much better than this, this will certainly be among the fav's for a long time. Too bad peeps are still stuck with Naruto and Gundam Seed.

An excellent continuation of a great TV series, HnI Champion Road succeeds where many other after-TV run series have failed; that is continue the development of the characters in an engrossing story. It starts off at the last few minutes of the TV series finale and effectively introduces all the major players again with a incredible new foe for Ippo to defend his newly acquired belt. You'll definitley watch it all the way through the credits,; this series is a classic that HAS to be brought over and given the respect it deserves! Definitley in my top 3 of all time, and has made believers out of everybody I've shown it to!
