Synopsis : 100 Stories is a rare Mystery/Horror anime that takes place in the late Tokugawa period of Japan. It follows the adventures of Yamaoka Hyakusuke, a writer, who is traveling in order to collect 100 Stories in which to publish a book on; as well as the exploits of three underground "detectives", who often indirectly deal with the mysterious cases of rampant demons, ghosts, curses, etc.
The three "detectives" themselves are shrouded in mystery, and often seem more horrible than the superstitious terrors that they overcome: Noichi the "komatamoguri" (one who deceives others using words), Ogin the "yamanekomawashi" (puppeteer), and Nagamimi the "toriyose" (one who summons birds through mimicry).
After his first encounter with these three 'detectives', Yamaoka is left horrified at the brutality in which "the deed is done", but strangely attracted by the group. He joins up with them later, lending what help his broad knowledge of stories can be of, and recording the new tales of horror that he comes across.

Story
*******
Momosuke, who once wrote riddles for children, searches the world for inspiration. He dreams of collecting myths and legends and compiling them in a single book of 100 stories.
In his travels, Momosuke happens to run into a mysterious trio. The group leader, Mataichi, and his companions are on their own mission to look for participants of strange stories in order bring justice to those who have been wronged.
Time and again, Momosuke witnesses the doings of Mataichi's gang and the way in which they carry out judgment. Momosuke soon realizes that he's in uncharted waters while he is forced to question his own morals and beliefs in what is right and what is wrong.
Sights
*******
The style of this anime was strange. There were plenty bright colors and strange images, which adds to the creepy and weird aspects of the story.
Sounds
*******
The music was absolutely terrible. The opening and ending songs were painful to listen to. A Japanese guy trying to sing a slow song in English simply wasn't to my liking. The tunes and melodies were alright, nothing really special.
Opinion
*******
This anime was sheer weirdness. Each episode, being its own story, shows the cruel and twisted nature of humanity. Character development was well done. Momosuke is innocent and seems terrified with what he sees and learns from his experience with the trio; Ogin, the girl in the group, is a puppeteer who uses her little friend to create illusions for the targeted victim; and Nagamimi, the long lobed big guy in the group is able to control beasts at will. My favorite character, Mataichi, is a pretty funny guy. He switches from being kind and friendly to being scary and murderous at the drop of a hat. The ending to this anime was rather vague but all in all it was enjoyable. If you have spare time, I suggest trying this one, it's pretty interesting.
