Maburaho

Studio : J.C. STAFF

Licenced by : ADV Films

Length : 24 Episodes

Year : 2003

Genre : Comedy - Ecchi - Fantasy - Romance

Synopsis :
This is the story of a 17 year-old guy that goes by the name of Shikimori Kazuki who lives in a land of magic. Everyone in the world can use magic a certain number of times from the time they are born until the time their life expires. Unfortunately, Shikimori can only use magic eight times, after that, he will turn into ash and disappear from this world. What he doesn't know is that his genes come from a line of the most powerful mages and magicians in the world. Due, to his recent ancestors being so poor in magic, it is theorized that Shikimori's child will be blessed with the great buildup of magical power from the ancestors long ago and become a very powerful magician. When this fact is revealed, every girl in his school gears up to battle over who will lay him first. Ecchi comedy insues.

My first impression of this show was a Guardian Hearts clone. But when I look back now, it seems to have enough differences to arouse more interest than Guardian Hearts did. The main character is not just some poor random guy, but a man of substantial background. With the cliched group of female lead roles (the childhood friend/the samurai girl/the chick with big titties), many veteran anime watchers will feel that they have watched this before, but I will personally enjoy watching this story unfold.

In general Maburaho was a good anime series...yet it was cut short. I dont mean in episodes but in the plot, sort of because it was haphazardly set up, at best, with the ending being visible before it was even shown. The comedy involved in this anime made my attention grow for it, though, because who doesn't like thinking "Hmmm... I am just some random guy with nothing good, purely average" but then his whole world could be turned upside down from a little thing as his genes?

High Points:
It grabs the watcher's attention by having comedy all around. The whole scenario did not seem outdated even if it seemed copied from Negima!. The characters didn't really end up growing in any way besides the main character, but we sort of expect that. Music was totally in sync with the anime, not so sure if the watchers liked it, although I did.

Low:
It was focused mainly around one group of people with the occasional side character getting in his one or two episodes. By this I mean the friend who supposedly also had super mage genes.
Other music besides opening and closing I didn't like. I like fast paced music. Plot was spastic and just jumped as the conclusion of this anime came too also.

General blab:
In all respect this was a good anime. The characters were funny keeping the watcher in constant thought about what they would or would not do depending on the relationship with said main character. The thoughts alone made you laugh. They could have made this anime a little longer, but then it would only repeat itself and the same jokes doesn't get the same reaction twice.
Not too much or too little of anything even threw in the whole "I'm special" piece into this anime. I might only understand this comment though. Main character never stops being too chivalrous. Even though at the beginning he deemed himself ordinary, he changes throughout series.

So overall good but could have been better.

Review based on all 24 episodes... 1st half English, 2nd half Japanese...

Animation: An older title that debuted just as CGI was emerging, so it's primarily hand-drawn with a very small number of CGI help. All things considered, this show is drawn quite well. Colors are bright and solid; character-design is attractive; backgrounds are full; magical elements are animated well. (90/100)

Characters: A small cast of 3 girls revolving around one hapless teenage boy. The girls are all completely different from one-another, so if you like the cute doting type, Yuna is your girl. If you like the strong, powerful, intelligent type, then Kuriko is for you. If you like the shy, trying warrior type, then Rin would be your choice (FWIW, she's my choice too... her shyness and quick temper is an adorable and hilarious combination). They did add in the childhood-friend type later on when Chihaya joined the cast. Very cute. The story bounces mainly around this small group and gets excellent support from it's second-tier characters (teachers and students) who do quite well in balancing the story. The male-lead is quite annoying in how pathetic and uncaring he is, so that alone brought the score down a bit. (83/100)

Music: I love the opening... very lively and energetic. The ending theme isn't bad... far from great, but definitely likable. What it's best used for is the remixes and reprises that provide very nice background music insert songs during dramatic scenes. Not that the whole soundtrack was just a rehashing of the same two songs over and over... in actuality, the whole OST was quite pleasing and fitting for the series. (91/100)

Story: The story was probably what hurt the overall score the most. I totally love magic-users anime and I like the premise of a powerful magician who can't use his magic. However, the thing about magic limits and some of the corny stunts the students at Aoi Academy do kinda wastes the whole idea. I was hoping for better use of the powers, but instead a lot of things came off as kind of lame. It's not until the second-half of the show that the characters finally start using much more interesting and cooler magic... especially during battles. The storyline takes a big number of loops, but does well overall. The last few minutes are rushed, but I did enjoy the conclusion and felt likea lot of the bigger issues were resolved, even if it was left wide open enough for a sequel season. (82/100)

Overall: When I originally started watching this, I had an extremely hard time getting myself to enjoy this show. I was built up to enjoy a nice magic-users anime, coming off the high that Harry Potter had started. I was more or less disappointed with how the story was developing and how restricted the world built around this show felt. Even after Kazuki's big "transformation" near the halfway point kind of left me with an uncaring attitude. I had trouble empathizing with him and any of the girls. After taking over a year's long break from this show, I decided to finally finish it off, and looking back now, I'm much glad that I did. The final concluding episodes had added-in cheesiness to draw out the plot a little more longer, but it never felt like anything unbelievable. If anything, it provided ample opportunity for the characters to stretch their emotions and show different sides of their personalities. In the end, I've come to enjoy Maburaho and would even dare to recommend... but with obvious warning to not expect much from it until the second half is fully underway. (77/100)

The anime was pretty good. I would give this anime an 7/10 because of the few flaws it had.

Characters were great. Each character had their own personality and changed a lot since the beginning. Kazuki and the girls have drastically changed and have formed a web of love. When I was watching this anime, I thought that the character designs for the guys were just too plain and generic while the girls were different.
8/10

Story was horrible. The climax of the anime ended pretty early and after that, the episodes felt like fillers.
5/10

Music is good. I thought that the opening and the ending themes fit perfectly with the anime itself. The opening is one of those songs that I could listen to forever and never get tired. The ending makes me feel at ease. The background music wasn't all that great. It never matched the situations that were occurring.
8/10

Animation is the same as all the other animes 4 years ago. There were a few problems though, one character would be taller than the other at one point, then the other becomes taller.
7/10

Overall, the anime was good but still needed a few adjustments and maybe a sequel because the ending for the anime was horrible.
7/10

I don't know why most of the people who reviewed this anime gave an under-rate. I know it doesn't deserve a 10 or 9 even a 8 but at least 7 come on. The plot of the story went well and the characters were pretty much in sync with everything else. I know the story itself was kind of bad but it's above-average in my opinion. This is how I rated this anime.

Characters: 8 - Variety and uniqueness makes this anime worth awhile. The main character and the girls developed really good history and have a really good connection, hence made me give this a 8. It's not a 10 in my opinion because some elements are missing and when you watch the anime, you'll know it.

Music: 7 - The opening song was great - unbeatable I tell you - but everything kind of just slacked off. The background music doesn't match with the scenes and the ending was just horrible.

Animation: 8 - Very good for a 2003 anime. The drawing was pretty much consistent throughout the whole series and everything was pretty great. However, the perspective is pretty off. Sometimes you see the character really big far away and the same size when they're supposedly, close.

Story: 5 - Lord O'Mighty! Can you please give me something else other than a weakling male who has hidden powers that needs to be saved by strong females. The only thing that went well was the beginning and the plot. Everything else was crash and burn, and burn some more.

Overall: 7 - It's an OKAY anime and a bit above average. Since I'm a lenient scorer, 7 will have to do. Anyway guys, this is an anime for guys who likes to watch ecchi and harem; basically it and a bit more with magic and some romance.

Honestly, like everyone has said before Maburaho is an average anime, but though the plot seems predictable I personally didn't expect so many twist and unexpected events and the ending... hehehe. I've watch a lot of guys monopolizing so many girls anime but this is one ending thats completely different but then I guess this way everyone is happy, I think.

The animation was pretty good considering the year when it was made plus the drawings were also good save for the main character.

The music was okay. Not too catchy but suitable to the story.

All in all, Maburaho is a good anime to past the time and have a few laughs.

I watched this anime a while back and found it to be rather pathetic for the most part. Over all sub-par to average in all of its aspects. Fortunately it was a relatively short anime. The thing that made me end up liking the anime and recommending it to my brother was the final ending sequence. I found it to be very appropriate to the situation, and absolutely hilarious. I also found it to be unexpected because it is a really unique solution that I had never found elsewhere in anime.

Again overall watch it but if it becomes to tedious just make sure that you watch the final episode just so you don't miss the final ending.

If you're looking for a funny romantic anime, this is what you're looking for. The sad part is that it only has 12 episodes and season 2 has only 5 episodes. The chrater's are not like really really good drawings but I give it a 9 and 1/2 out of 10. The story in the end might make you want to cry a little bit. I don't want to be a killer so I wont tell you every thing about this anime. If the people make more of this king of anime I will sit in my chair and watch it for 24/7. lol If you're one of those who don't like romantic or a a lot of comedy then this is not for you. It talks about a 17 year old soccer player that attends a soccer school. He only can use 8 time magic in his life but an averge soccer player that is 17 years old has over 8000 magic charge. Watch this and you'll feel like wanting more of it. I watched this anime a few times, that's how good it is.

Wow... hey... I don't really care what the others think about this anime, but this is the first time I'll be giving a higher-than-average rating. One side, seems like a great story about love and friendship. On otherside, seems like a common school in a lame scenario of romance. I've look on the better side more, and I think it is important for that in order to enjoy this anime.

Main character, Kazuki, is your typical useless yet caring guy. His life is pretty much down in the dumps when a twist of fate land him with 3 of beautiful girls in his school. (I dont know about Guardian Hearts, but I think this anime have a lot of similarities compared to Love Hina.)

Sure, this type of high school love ecchi/harem love story is a cliche, but nonetheless a good story that I feel is worth watching for. I agree, though, that this anime dont really have much rewatch value, but thats not the point here.

Plot: 3
As I've said this type of love ecchi/harem story is a cliche... too common, overused, unoriginal... The "twist of fate" scenario is also too common for the girls to appear. AND, the main problem...

"He can only use magic 8 times!"...

...sounded so stupid.
No, really, this limit sounds so stupid you already know it all gonna get used up and something gonna happen and the fact that ABILITY CAPACITY of a main character can be calculated makes me think 'I dun give a f*ck man!' Why the hell will anyone put such a obvious, calculatable/measurable cap limit on something you can develop so much on????

Story: 9
Character development goes real well as well as the physical and mental bonding between the four main characters. Lucky, in the world of crazily powerful and logic-defying magic world, the story still explains what goes on well and didnt really leave behind any open ends. One bad part is, that story span too long, although a 13 episode series will be too short.

Animation: 9
Great. But.
The animation still have some flaws. The characters lacked natural reactions.
Animation flow not very good; how can anyone walk out of a room where they nearly died so calmly?

Music and Sounds: 6
The voice acting is pretty well, but I cant stand the parts where they kept screaming.
I couldn't put my finger on what's nice and what's bad about the Music... I'll say its between Great and sub-par.

Overall: 8
The ending (which looks a bit similar to that of L*** H***) is, well, funny, nice, yet strange. Its pretty good enough for anyone who wants to enjoy a funny ecchi comedy. Its the story that stands out in this anime, although it didnt stand out from the other animes....

Honestly, Maburaho is an average anime. It wasn't one of those animes that left me wanting more, but then again I didn't find myself bored while watching it.

Story:
The story is alright. Later on, I'd say it gets a little better, but then again I like it when there's a love conflict in an anime. Basically, the story has been done 100 times in every other harem comedy. That being said, it was well-paced and presented for such a cliche story.

Presentation:
Whilst not stunning to look at, Maburaho does offer some nice colorful animation that does the job. Personally, I though they all looked a bit young for their ages, since most of them were 17+.

Audio:
Overall, the sound was fairly decent. There was nothing outstanding about any of the voicework, but it wasn't horrible to listen to.

Overall:
Maburaho is a fun little anime to watch. Something that kills time I guess. There's definately a lot more out there that anime has to offer, Watching it the first time through, you definately won't be bored, but there's really no replay value for this sereis.

Maburaho was originally a show I wanted to watch when it first came out, but somehow it just slipped by. I'm definitely not disappointed that it took me quite a while to get to this series, but it was an enjoyable watch for the most part.

Maburaho takes place in a world, where the higher your ability to use magic is, the more valued you are in society, therefore those with higher ability are considered superior and treated so. Shikimori Kazuki, the main male lead, not only has a extremely low, but he has no outstanding characteristics other than his bottomless kindness (or so it seems). Everyone at his school soon discovers however that he may possess the genes to the next great magician in human history, and that leads to three of the strongest magical houses competing for his genes. As usual, mischief and mayhem ensue and the the daughters for each respesctive household compete for his affections/genes.

Highlights:

-Maburaho had no real outstanding points other than it's animation. The animation was very attractive and consistent throughout the entire series. At times, the battles would be extremely fluid and displayed the potential the series' animation had.

Lows:

-Maburaho was definitely not too original. The series was cliche. Everything about it was cliche. You had multiple girls who had multiple personalities competing against each other for one guy, the guy is pretty average all around except for his tremendous kindness towards others, and all the girls fall for him despite some initial hesitation. The cliches go on, but I'll not mention any more.

Er...:

-The music wasn't very good, but it also wasn't bad enough to have hurt the series' overall score. Maburaho had some nice tunes to it, but many of them got old quite quickly. I did however really like the ending theme.
-Most of the comedy was very predictable, which really made a lot of the jokes not very funny. Some of the jokes were still funny, but nothing was too funny.

With a cliched story and cliched characters, Maburaho doesn't strike you with originality at all. Maburaho's strongest point was its animation. Maburaho was enjoyable to a certain point, but it doesn't have anything that makes it stand out compared to other series. I'd recommend this to people who like to watch harem type shows with good animation, decent music, and predictable comedy.

This is the first anime I ever got totally obsessed with.

Art. This anime has nice artwork. The women in the are extremely nice to look at. Even though the umm boobage can be exaggerated a little.

Sound. Beatiful music through and through done by 4peace. The audio is good as well. I watched this half in American and half in Japanese voices. I have no problem with either.

Story. It's kinda a stupid story. 3 girls all after the main character's "genes" but it does develop into a sweet romantic comedy later on.

This anime was unneccessarily long. It would be better as a 13 epi series. That way, there would be less fillers. but I loved it. even thought I thought this season was too long, I'm hoping for another season of Maburaho.

This is one of my most favorite animes. The series is GREAT! The characters are all well drawn and a lot of fun to learn about. They also have all types of girls around the main character.

The ending leaves you wondering if there will be a sequal. It does hit a heart cord when the story hits half-way, that's when the relationships really changes. If you wanna see a heart warming and touching series of love, tribulations, and life after death, then watch this on if you never watched any other anime!

I never like to get too into an anime because I don't like giving much away. But for only a one season anime, they do cover a lot of the character backgrounds and you still get a lot of laughs (like every 2 seconds). And they even throw a loop into the ending with some interesting outcomes!

Well , what can I say , I bought this because the cover was cool and there was a good review on it.

The anime starts off with a useless goody guy in a magical world ... studying . The reason is because he can only use magic 8 times, more than that and he will go poof .... in other words disappear from the world . Then one day , everyone discovered that the guy has very powerful genes and three beautiful girls appear wanting to have his child . That's where all hell break loose and the funny parts begin .

As the story progress , it becomes a bit more serious but always ends up being funny. The ending was very ... surprising. Somehow making me think that there might be more to it than that . Is there? Or is that it!

Basically not a bad anime with the basic anime girl problem (that is having more that one girl liking a guy) that makes a good comedy and also the anime music is good , especially when something funny is about to happen . The character design in the anime is a typical normal anime style character , nothing special .

If you like funny anime of a guy with girl problems , a mixture of magic and fantasy . Then you should give "Maburaho" a shot.

First of all, Maburaho isn't that bad an anime, it's just that I expected maybe a little too much out of it and the show ended up being different than from what I thought it would be.

Animation visuals are nice, music is pretty decent. The main character, Shikimori Kazuki, is a typical shy, down to earth, sweet, caring, and sensitive guy surrounded by pestering guy friends but then also stalked by three beautiful girls. Yuna, the childhood girl who promised to be his wife, Kuriko, the rich blonde girl who was seductive as ever, and Rin, the sword wielding yet outspoken girl all chase around Kazuki throughtout the span of 24 episodes. There's also Yamase, Kazuki's childhood best friend who comes into play later on in the series, and it seemed that she had a pretty important part of the whole ending sequence.

The downside though was that while watching this anime, many episodes seemed dull, uninspired, repetitive, unimportant, and just went around in circles. Yeah there were some good episodes that stayed with me and that I enjoyed a lot, but those came few and far between. One thing I think that's missing from this anime is real drama, which evokes human emotion. I think that's why I really didn't enjoy this anime because of the fact that it just doesn't stir up a lot of emotions for viewers. The only real drama that I noticed was when Kazuki had to make a sacrifice for one of the girls in the middle of the series, but then you sort of knew what was going to happen afterwards in a way. Then the ending of course was the best dramatic sequence, but I still found it to be totally predictable, except for what happened to Kazuki in the "very end" of the anime. The ending was probably the most serious five minutes of the whole anime, but it was still not serious enough to provoke me to get mad, sad, really happy or etc. But then again the girls "sort of" got what they wanted, and that made me smile in the end.

So this is an anime that can be enjoyable to watch, for me it was just a little difficult, but still a decent show. It has a nice mix of light comedy, a kind but very indecisive main character surrounded by cute girls who can all get a bit annoying at different times, nice visuals and music, a non serious story plot which may be a plus to some of you or a negative to others. So if you're into all of the above then go for it, and trust me it's nice to give new anime a view and it was certainly not a waste of my time.

Review Score: 7/10

Erm... Maburaho wasn't too catchy of an anime in my opinion.

Animation: There's no question here- the animation is very good. It's crisp, clear, and flowing, but so are many recent animes like this one.

Characters: There's a variation in them, but it's a bit of a typical anime cast. Nothing's really new: typical loser guy, perverted guy/girl, childhood friend, other girl who you knew when you were young, sword girl. Love Hina, anyone? (not just Love Hina... a lot of other series also.). Unfortunately, unlike other series, there wasn't anything that made this series' characters stick out.

Storyline: Nice twist, but they didn't really do anything to make it spectacular. If they hadn't spent so much time emphasizing on some random support characters, they would have made the storyline much more flowing and interesting. As it was, it seemed like they just tried to fill in the 24 episodes with comedy/useless/ecchi episodes. (Although there was some pretty good comedy.)

Sounds/Music: It's neat at first, but gets tiring to listen to after a while. It's okay.

Conclusion: A nice watch, but the only character worth noticing is the childhood friend, who at least wasn't as plastic as the other characters.
