This show was one of the few that made me cry (as also stated by the other reviewers), and this was not just once in the show but instead on many occasions.
Among many great qualities, what stood out most was:
- The amazing character development - through the use of flashbacks and scene-period variation (the episodes are sometimes from the main character, Kamogawa Asumi, as a child and other episodes are of her as a teenager), the viewer really gets an understanding of each character that is difficult to attain in other shows.
- Thorough plot development - this anime really used every episode to aim at the main ideas of the story. That's good use of time is hard to find.
The BGM was okay; the opening and closing songs were some of the best I've known, although they were not performed by the bigger pop culture artists as in many more popular anime.
There were two things that made me drop it to nine rather than giving it a straight ten:
- The animation, although sometimes amazing, could also be quite poor.
- The ending was far too abrupt. It seems that it may have been cancelled or something; I don't know the real story, but the ending seemed like it should have come on more slowly, and the story was left feeling a bit incomplete.

More people need to watch this anime. I think that's a pretty high compliment, and it's really sad to see only two reviews here. Twin Spica looks and feels childish. I understand that, but that's also kind of the point. This anime that has a really small main character with cartoon looking animation and themes will make you believe in the same values you once held as a child. It will first toy around with your emotions, and but then it will make you feel like you can accomplish anything as long as you try hard enough, and it will make you so grateful you watched it. I'm certainly very happy I chose to watch this show. As soon as the second episode, I was sure I had made a good decision because wow that episode was emotional. There's a good reason this anime is on Kaiser's top ten emotional or sad anime list.
It all starts and ends with Kagome Asumi, the tiny main character who makes everybody fall in love with her and is willing to do anything to make her dreams come true. It is Asumi's natural character that allows her to get past all the obstacles in her life, and make friends out of all of her enemies. She doesn't look like much, but she's a great character. Her imaginary friend Lion-san heads a very strong supporting cast that includes a strong silent emotionless girl, a brash, rough around the edges and very blunt girl, a brilliant mischievous eyebrowless guy, and a childhood friend who deeply cares about Asumi but never wants to admit it. The cast operates very well together, and you really get to know all of them. Also, I think I need to mention Asumi's dad who is just amazing. He works long hours, wakes up early, goes to sleep really late, and sacrifices everything he has for his daughter. I think his speech in the second episode is just so moving, and probably worth watching a couple times just because it is that good.
The story is wrapped up very well at the end because it is set up so well in the beginning and middle. The unifying plot device of the spaceship crashing is the driving force for all the tragedy behind the show, and essentially every character in the show is affected by that event. It makes the show really simple to follow in a way, but the plot is definitely anything but simple. Lion-san is also related to a few of the characters, and that ends up being really cool as well. Every episode is meaningful, and while it is odd that this show is 20 episodes, it works out quite well. I don't advocate having meaningless episodes to make that number come out to a specific digit anyway.
The music is very good, and it might be strange but what left the biggest impression one me was the instrumental song that plays in the middle of each episode. It is accompanied by all the characters showing up and looking up towards the sky, and lasts about five seconds but it's so good. The opening and ending songs are pretty solid as well. Space is used as a vehicle for moving the theme along, and it's pretty perfect in this anime because space is such an idealistic goal that it seems like only children would want to go there. Yet, the reality of making it to space is of course very difficult and that reality is tough to take sometimes. The voice acting is tremendous. I don't know how Asumi's voice did not get annoying through 20 episodes but for some reason I never got tired of hearing her talk, even when she says the silliest things. Her voice is just very cute. Shuu's voice is done by the same seiyuu that does Fuji from Prince of Tennis and Kurapica in Hunter X Hunter, and that unique voice is very fun to listen to. I also liked Fuchuuya's voice, he sounded very much like the stubborn guy he is and he delivered all of his lines very well. The special effects are interesting, like the way the shuttle crash is shown or the way the series goes into drawn art form. I got kind of annoyed at the latter when each episode took forever to start, but that's why you can skip parts.
I think the ending is the biggest flaw with this anime, although it's not really a flaw so much as it's not perfect. I would have liked to see them go to space and that be the ending, but I guess where it ended was ok as well. I think introducing the theme that they did at the end all of a sudden was kind of strange though. They could have eased that theme in a little bit more, because although it stems from the beginning with Asumi's mother, it seems to contrast Asumi's other reasons for wanting to go to space like her friends and such. Still, it's not the biggest complaint, and I don't think it really detracts from the quality of the anime. Honestly, this anime should be watched by everybody. It will make you believe that you can accomplish anything you want to with just the things you learned and believed as a child. If you don't like this anime, you may have already lost the eyes that the professor in the show lost when he looks at a satellite picture of Earth, and that's a shame.

Animation: Clean, kinda old'ish style so to say.. IMO I think it is. I wouldn't grade down the score because of the animation because each character is very uniquely drawn to their personality and their lifestyle. It's good, but not great.
Characters: Wonderful, even though I've only watched the first 2 episodes, I get a sense that the character development will be astonishing. Even in the beginning with the main character, Asumi, and her dad, it's tear-jerking and also you learn a lot from them. I'll be looking forward to the new characters and how they interact.
Story: The synopsis above by "gc" is very well said. It's short and simple, gets to the point. Basically it's about Kamogawa Asumi dreaming to become an astronaut, and she goes through all sorts of hardships along the way. Of course I can't really say much because I've only watched the first 2 episodes but that really sums up the whole story. Brilliantly made though.. One of the few animes that make me tear up so bad. :'[
Sounds/Music: Love the awesome opening song, it's catchy and it just makes you feel good. The BGM is pretty good, considering most of the scenes are kind of melancholy.
Great series, I personally thought this anime was going to be a draggish, crappy anime, but once you see it, it makes you want to see what is going to happen next. I give it a perfect score for its great story and tear-jerking scenes.

Definately a great, tearjerker series. It's a very slow, heartfelt series but I find myself not minding for some strange reason. I think it's because the characters, music and plot are just right. I often find myself on the verge of tears!
If what you like is understated, clever and plot driven series then Twin Spica is a delight. After action? You should probably look elsewhere.
My favourite to watch in a while.
