I'm going to give this anime 9 stars because it is the first anime that ever shocked me the most. I thought it was going to be like Sailor Moon where the girls get super powers, save the world, and falls in love...etc but IT'S NOT.
I love how they gave the "watchers" (meaning us) small tiny hints that when you watch it the first time you don't pay attention to but after a few more times, you start to notice the little details that foreshadow the twisted plot that is about to hit you really hard when you least expect.
I didn't give this anime a 10 because the ending pissed me off. It seemed unrealistic, as if Sunrise was in a hurry and rapped it all together so it could be done.
Overall, this anime is a big thriller. If you're the type of person who enjoys "dark romanticism" (it's the study about the dark side of human nature. Example of it is "The Raven") then I'd most likely recommend it for you. It shows even the nicest people have a darker side because they desire something important to them.

Mai HiME’s ending is atrocious. I have to get that out of the way before I start this review. Just urgh… Ok, now that I’ve gotten that out of the way I can actually review the series because Mai Hime is a very entertaining anime. It may have pissed about for several episodes and some/most of the characters are forgettablem but nevertheless this is still a highly entertaining piece of work. Created by Sunrise, whose work many people liken to a trainwreck, Mai Hime is certainly not a bad thing in my book, even though the description is farily accurate.
Mai Hime is about a bunch of high-school girls with super powers. Yeah, we’ve seen this before, but what makes Mai Hime stand above others in this genre is the quality of the fighting. Every girl has her own fighting style; Mikito in particular has an amazing fighting style with her oversized sword and her hyperactive attitude. With all the various people in Mai Hime, it can be difficult to remember who’s who and who likes who and whatnot. To compensate for this, most of the characters are very simple, such as that crazy octopus-haired one. Although this makes them easier to follow, it also means that none of these characters will stick in your mind after the show. Except maybe Mikito. She’s one crazy bitch!
The first half of the series is very much high school fodder with random magical girl fights thrown in. The problem with Mai Hime is that you will feel detached from the characters due to their rather simple natures. It’s very hard to care about any fight too much due to the fact that you don’t really care about anyone in the show. Nobody has any real sort of depth and you just can’t connect with anyone. It’s still a fun bit of fluff (with bits of fanservice thrown in for good measure), but don’t expect anything too deep, even when it hits some of the more dramatic parts towards the middle.
Around the last third, Mai Hime begins its trainwreck, and, in many ways, it’s perfectly timed. Basically it goes somewhere along the lines of ‘well, we’ve gotten as much out of these characters so far and now the viewer knows who everyone is. Now let’s use all those pent up emotions and plot-twists we’ve been saving in one wild brawl’. That’s really the best way to put it. Sounds kinda dumb but - by God - it’s entertaining. This show had been hinting at these plot twists since the start of the show and watching them unfold in such chaotic fashion…well, it took a long time until something wowed me as much.
Mai Hime is a show to marathon. If you stop watching for a few days you may forget who’s who. Also, it’s hard to tear your eyes away from the screen during those wild last few episodes. It’s actually these last few episodes that make the ending so awful (yes, back to the ending). While you have been shooting through the final few episodes in such wild fashion, the ending is such a slap-in-the-face and really hampers the quality of Mai Hime.
Mai Hime isn’t a masterpiece. It isn’t fantastically written with quotable lines. What it is, though, is hugely entertaining. If you’re not much in the mood for thinking and just want to be entertained (and you haven’t watched Code Geass yet) then set yourself a rainy weekend and watch Mai Hime.

I have heard nothing but positive things about this show, and after browsing through the reviews here on A-S, I decided to give Mai Hime some of my attention. Review based on Bandai Entertainment DVD release.
Animation
I found the animation to be very colourful and bright. Unlike shows of this type, it never reached the point of it looking saccharine. The character designs were lovely and the 'Children' of the Hime were nicely animated.
Story
I found the first 16 episodes to be rather slow. There were some funny comedic moments, but I never really got into the show until things started getting incredibly serious from episode 17 onwards. Mai Hime started off as a mediocre high school action series. It then suddenly changed into an emotionally involving, tragic showcase of loss, betrayal and love. It was perhaps one of the hardest hitting turnarounds I’ve seen in a series of this type. I was expecting a change in pacing and perhaps direction, but nothing of the intensity and surprise that I experienced.
Characters
This was perhaps the strongest aspect of the show. Each of the characters was given time to highlight their personalities and past. It almost reached a point of being excessive though as this characterization occupied the first 16 episodes and almost spoilt the story’s flow and pacing. Overall, the characters were explored brilliantly and I felt immense empathy to every single one of the characters.
Music/Sound
The OP was quite decent, but nothing special to write about. I enjoyed the slow and melancholic ED. I thought that the choice of song was at odds with the fairly positive mood of the first half of the show. It was only towards the end when things went sour that I understood its selection. The English dubbing is not the best I’ve seen and I eventually stuck to the Japanese soundtrack.
Summary
As always, I’m very open-minded when it comes to recommendations from others. I had heard that this was one of the best shows around. Unfortunately I can’t quite agree with that. It is a very fine and impressive show, but I wouldn’t consider it the best I’ve seen. The slow pacing of the first half of the show spoiled it for me. Apart from that I found watching Mai Hime to be fairly entertaining. A very dependable 4 stars.

I'll start off by saying that this is one of my favorite series. A lot of the reviews on this page do a very good job of listing some of the highlights and drawbacks, however I do feel compelled to point out that the anime was not created from the manga. At the very least they were created around the same time (I think the manga was even started a little more than halfway through the anime), so comparisons between the two are apples to oranges. I'm enjoying the manga, but it really is a different story, so don't expect all characters or the plot to be similar. The main character in the anime is Mai Tokiha, not Yuichi Tate. The three main girls (Mai, Natsuki, and Mikoto) get more of the spotlight in the anime while the boys are in more supporting-type roles. So, it should help to know that going in.
Animation & Sound
The animation was very good, although pretty standard for more modern anime. The child animation and their summoning sequences were nicely done, and they weren't too repetitive. The character designs were very effective and each character was distinct with their own personality drawn in the animation (from Mai's spunky courage to Natsuki's cool confidence. Plus Mai's ever-present stray lock of hair is just too cute.
The sound was very natural without sounding odd or misplaced. The music was fantastic. The soundtrack had several themes that were replayed with several variations throughout, but it also had plenty of unique melodies throughout as well. The OP and ED were fabulous IMHO, and two of my favorites. The OP is an upbeat J-Pop through and through, will the ED has a more melancholy rock sound to it. The other vocal pieces were appropriate, emotional, and otherwise strongly moving and are definitely some of my favorites to listen to. By the way, "It's Only the Fairy Tale" has some hauntingly appropriate lyrics, if you can get past the mangled Engrish to understand them.
9/10
Plot
The series starts off somewhat slow with a lot of character development. It's a bit silly, but still quite fun with certain plot elements being slowly mixed in to create some suspense. The second half gets pretty intense as all the character development starts to pay off. There are a few twists halfway through and then farther on closer to the end. The plot wraps itself up fairly well in the end without leaving a flood of loose ends, although there will still be a few things to ponder. The mood of this series goes from comedic and fun to mysterious and puzzling to heartbreaking and gut-wrenching right back again, so be prepared. The first couple episodes may have you thinking "oh, just a silly cute-girl anime", but by the end of this series that thought won't be anywhere nearby.
So here are my thoughts with spoilers, so don't read if you don't want to know anything ahead of time. The only real down point of the plot that I felt was that the ending was a bit too cheesy/silly. I actually thought the way the ending wrapped up story-wise was pretty good. I don't think I could have stood to watch an ending that didn't have some happiness to it, but I think the execution was just a bit overdone, the HiME's silly apologies to each other rather than a more dramatic scene, Tate screaming "I LOVE MAI" instead of a quieter, more personal line, etc.
But the rest of the series was just emotionally moving, for me. The character development really brought their plight into stark focus during the second half, with each new hardship bringing more sorrow to the characters (and by proxy to the viewer). The little twists were really neat, along with the set up for the ending (all starting with Midori-chan sacrificing herself and her loved one so they could possibly have a better future). The resolutions of the character's dilemmas through the series were largely in keeping with their personality, which was very satisfying. I knocked a couple points off for the ending's execution, but the rest of the series was marvelous, IMHO.
8/10
Characters
This is REALLY where the show shines, I think. The characters, to me, were just very engaging, sympathetic, and realistic. Mai is one of my favorite characters, because she is brave, compassionate, loyal, and hardworking, and even though she is shy about admitting her feelings (especially to herself), she always tries so hard to do what's right, even if she has to suffer a bit in the process. Natsuki is cool, reserved, independent yet she slowly opens up and values the friendships she builds in the series. Of all the characters, I think Natsuki developed and changed the most over the course of the series, and it was definitely fun to watch. Mikoto is genuine and candid and pretty much without guile. So, whenever she displays emotion, it's pretty much as raw and honest as emotion gets and hence much more moving.
The characters act mature without seeming too unrealistic and seem to really have the capacities of high schoolers, albeit a bit more mature high schoolers than *I* went to school with (and moreso than I was in high school).
Overall, the characters make this series. The development in the first half pays off in the second half as I could empathize with the hardships along with the characters. If you aren't at least somewhat emotionally attached to the characters in this series by a quarter way through, or if you aren't the type that really engages with the main characters ofa s tory, then this series will probably be less than ideal, because that's where Mai Hime bases its story. If you like to allow yourself to empathize with characters in a story, or you are someone that likes to engage with the story along with the characters, then this series will probably end up as one of your favorites.
10/10
Overall
Like I said, one of my favorites. If you like to engage with the characters in a story, this is totally for you. If you don't really bond with characters in a fictional tale, then the action and animation (and a small amount of cute girl fanservice) may tide you over.
The fanservice in this series is minimal. Yes, Mai has big boobs and it's something commented on a few times during the series. Yes, Natsuki collects expensive underwear, but the fanservice is limited to some lighthearted comedy, and I would say it in no way diminishes the dignity of the characters nor detracts from the overall story. The only real ecchi-ish fanservice shots are during special 2 minute deals that they threw in on the DVD. These were (IMHO) a classy way to include some fanservice as it didn't really interfere with the main series, plus there are some juicy bits of backstory and plot info in the special scenes which add to the overall story.
The combination of neat visuals, awesome characters, a pretty emotionally engaging plot, and really good music gives this a 10/10 in my book.

After finished watching, I would remember Mai Hime as an anime with great sound, vivid-color animation and design, and strong personality of two main characters, Mai and Mikoto.
Mai Hime is an anime full of great fighting scenes and emotional development of the main characters. The story from the first 16 episodes is just average and plainly predictable (but not boring), while the latter 10 episodes are more complex and full of emotional pressure. The friendship and understanding between Mai and Mikoto is excellently developed throughout the story; on the other hand, the loving relationship between Mai and Yuichi is not deep enough, and I think this is one of the weakest points of this anime. Besides Mai and Mokoto, the other 10 Himes characters are very well written.
The sound are top-class. Colors are vivid, and the character design are simply beautiful. Another enjoyable show, indeed.

A great show deserving nothing less! It is heart wrenching and personal which is quite surprising for the studio that made Gundam. Well drawn characters plus delivery of beautiful action scenes to the touching music by Kawai Kenji makes this anime a must-have. I highly recommend Mai Hime to everybody that is attracted to animation series that contains cute girls fighting.
Nao Yuuki was unstable to begin with and after she lost something important she became freaking insane. Mai Hime does not shy away from making the characters twisted which gives this anime a deliciously dark feel. It also has moments of pure comedy so the balance is nicely done. The range of emotions shown in this anime is vast and a joy to see.
Unfortunately I found the dark parts at times completely overdone. I find it hard to believe that the Himes that initially make good decisions, yet consistantly makes bad ones later on. The anime seems to agree when it needs to resort to a miracle at the end in order to pull off a decent ending.
Lastly, except for some rather heavily accented Engrish there really isn't much to gripe about. Mai Hime is an excellent anime that deserves 9/10.

Damm, this is a memorable one, at first I bought it with not much enthusiasm, but yesterday, I finished it, and I must say, it blows you away from your chair, bed or any place you are watching it, so lets review!
PLOT: Awesome! I must say that the first cap is bothersome, and maybe, lacks of ¨catching appeal¨, but at some point it just traps you. Its pretty interesting, and just grows and grows, with a very stunning plot twist, that gives the ¨tragic downfall¨, although the end it was a little disappointing, it fulfills. 9.5
MUSIC: Superb! If I had to say, its the strong point of the series, with that mellow chorus in the fighting scenes, sad and melancholic in the stressing parts, its Yuki Kajiura! what else can be said! The opening for me was not very remarkable, I don’t remember it well. The ending on the other hand is beautiful, has the all the tunes that reflects the series plots, just blow me away
Animation: A-... The animation just flows, not quite remarkable, but satisfies, the coloring was pretty good, and overall passes the test. Animate the Plot, not otherwise
Overall: 10. I give My Hime a 10 just because, its one of those animes that once you finish one chapter you eagerly FF to the next, nevertheless the opening or the ending, and it can bring a tear to your eye, as well as make you laugh. It’s an anime you can go and buy without the benefit of the doubt.

I'm not the kind of guy who minds watching all girl animes, so I will say this now: Mai-Hime is one of the best anime ever, in my eyes. I must say that the action of the series really caught my eye. It wasn't over the top but it was entertaining to say the least.
Though people say that the first half of the series was dull because of character introductions, I say that if the characters are interesting, then their introductions will surely be interesting as well, which is exactly how I felt. The characters were lovable in every way, from their secret hobbies to their chivalrous nature. And then the second half came, there are few anime I have seen where the plot is as well written as this one. I was amazed at the way everything unfolded and it kept me going non stop through the episodes to the end.
The way the tragic events started dropping down really touched me, but even though there was enough tragedy to keep someone crying throughout the series, I felt that the ending may have been one of the best ones I have ever seen. Great story with lovable characters who get involved in some pretty crazy action. Who could ask for more?

I have to say this is by far one of my favorite series of all time! You can basically say I fell in love with it to watch it three times? once is enough for me but gee, three.
Story: The first episode caught my attention with all the chaos and mystery going on. Teenage girls trying to live out their high school life with materializing power and powered up Childs! heck what else could be anymore interesting?
I just loved how each character was unique from any other series out there. Name any type of personality and you bet you'll get it in this series, no joke.
Overall: just watch the series and you'll have no regret. I manage to get 4 of my friends watching this. If you're not an anime person, the first few episodes are hard to get used to since its character development. After that its just A must Need to Watch.
First series to ever get me teary eyed - Unbelievable i say. I guess you can say thats another reason why i fell in love with this series. Ill openly admit it.

I was pleasantly surprised by this one! First, I've got to say that I've had my occasional goofs with this reviewing thing. I liked FMP: 2nd Raid a bit better than this series, but goofed and gave it a "9" because of some slower episodes and because the music was just so-so. It deserved a "10" also. My bad. That being said,...
There were tons of likeable and interesting characters in Mai Hime! And the story kept my interest pretty much throughout. I think I did some fast-forwarding during the Kareoke episode, but that was it.
A good amount of strong emotions (sadness, fear, anger, jealousy, caring, humor)! The ending was perhpas kind of on the randomish side, but worked OK for me.
The artwork was real good, helping to make the characters very appealing. The sound was good, but there wasn't any music that really caught my fancy.
So, this isn't a blow-you-away kind of series, but it was well-done enough and I simply enjoyed it enough to give it the big "10". Having Mai Otome available as a kind of "Mai Hime II" also was enjoyable. 5 STARS. 10 out of 10 Rating.

At first I was hesitant to watch this anime from some friends telling me how bad it was. Now I'm pissed off at my friends for saying such a thing. I admit the first half of the series was somewhat boring, but it was necessary for character building. Once the story started picking up the show blew me away. Each character was so unique to me with their personality and child. I thought it was also neat that each CHILD was from ancient Japanese folk tales, although they don't tell you but if you do a little research you can learn something more about them. Now to the good part. This anime is truly heartbreaking. At several points I cried. I had no idea this anime would be so depressing at some points.
I definitely recommend this anime to anyone who likes action and tragedy.

I’ve read the manga before this, I gotta say, there's a lot of difference in plot, yet little in the story. Where shall I begin? Mai-HiME does gave me some surprises, some very clichéd scenes where I though will be there, isn't there. The thing about this anime being not so alike from the other anime is a plus... yet also a minus.
Plot Pretty good
It began as a funny and silly comedy between a few characters, as well as some rather interesting developments in Mai’s life. But as the sad parts comes in, it got really sad... not in depth, but in length. For like a whole half of the anime it show loss and sadness and whatever Mai is facing, and the torment she is facing for so many episodes is tormenting me as well. This is why I like to use the term "sadistic" on this series.
But that's not all so much about why this is "sadistic", it’s also because it does have some rather disturbing elements in the series. Like sex suppression/abusing, rape, sluttish stuff, some rather perverted things... etc.
For something like Elfen Lied, it will be the selling point of the series, but the mood set by the song, first few episodes, etc. for this anime does make these stuff inappropriate, or likely unattractive.
It has a wonderful ending, no doubt, but it was a little under-developed. Everything happens so fast, bringing a little "unreal" feeling that everything so wrong can become so right, so easily. And it could have showed more on the aftermath, I think the fans deserve some developments on Mai and Tate.
Story Unique
This is where I found it different from the other anime and the common anime style. This series does have quite a different style of character development, although it’s not really that obvious, you might get attracted to it without knowing. The main attraction might very well be the original style of story progression.
I got to admit that the rather voluptuous chest of Mai does seems distracting at times... -.-
Animation Rather positive
While it does feel pretty 2D (no sub-par bloom effects people like to play with nowadays), it does pay attention to small details.
Music and Sounds Good
Though it may sound quite normal for a anime, I quite like the opening theme, which has a rather fast paced and "hopeful" feeling to it. The sound effects during the fighting scenes are rather nice too.
Overall Brilliant
If your patience to wait for the torment parts to end, you’ll find that it’s really much nicer that a lot of anime. For ones who seek "normal traditional anime-styled anime", they’ll probably only give it a pass, but I feel that the rather unique parts of the anime deserve to be appreciated, for I see it as a style on its own.

Wow, this anime's story had so many twists and turns that it really kept me sucked in for the last 10 or so episodes. This anime is really good overall, but a bit rough in some areas. That means that I thoroughly enjoyed it, but noticed some oddities or things that annoyed me.
Story
Tokiha Mai and her brother, Takumi, are transferring to a new school, Fuuka Academy, to make use of their new scholarship. But as the ride goes on, the ship comes across a unconscious girl holding a huge sword in the water. They pick her up, and that is where Mai meets Tate Yuuichi and his friend, who relentlessly calls him onii-san, Shiho. Things get weird as another girl sneaks on board and tries to assassinate the young girl the found earlier. Soon, she gets tangled in the fate that "HiME"s have, and their sad destiny.
Artwork/Animation
Overall, well done. I personally didn't like the art style too much, but its alright most of the time. The characters themselves all fit their (often weird) personalities and act accordingly. The animation is pretty good. It's fluid and the action scenes are a joy to watch, from Mai's flame attacks to Mikoto's sword attacks where she grinds the sword along the ground with sparks flying everywhere. There are a few reused scenes, but used sparingly so that they never get boring to watch.
Characters
I'm a little "meh" at this aspect. First the good things. The characters all interact nicely and you are given sufficient back-story for the main characters. They change over the course of the anime as bonds form and fall apart. The characters really seem to care for each other with proper emotions whenever something happens. Now for the cons. My biggest gripe is Tate Yuuichi. He has nearly no part in the anime until the last few episodes. This gives him a side-character type of feeling. It just seems spontaneous when he actually starts being integrated into the story. Compared to the huge role he was given in the manga, he has nothing in the anime. And the spontaneous things I mentioned earlier seem to be just random as things start falling apart in the end.
Sound/Music
The OP and the END songs were above average, but nothing I would download and listen to. But that being said, I still find myself humming to myself sometimes the opening or ending. The sound effects are generally good, but I think a few of them are a bit off or don't sound right.
Overall
The story was quite good. I enjoyed how they kept throwing twists in and kept killing everyone. The ending was a little disappointing to me, but it was alright. I also enjoyed how they significantly changed the anime from the manga. The main fundamentals remain, but the story and a few mechanics were switched around so both are enjoyable to watch/read. Its not just a retelling of each other.
I came into this anime not expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised with the natural feelings from the characters and the wild story. A good watch for anyone that enjoys fighting, romance, or just suspenseful stories in general.

I felt that Mai-HiMe truly deserved a good review after watching it.
What I like about this show is the emotions being portrayed by the characters. Their desire to protect the one that they treasure or love, as well as the struggle between friendships. Besides, the show also progress in a very good manner that display their growing friendships and romance during the first half of the series. However, the main story only surface during the later half of the series, where their friendships are being tested between the Himes and the romance Himes are required to protect at all cost. A dilemma is presented in front of the Himes and they must choose: Friendship or love ? Therefore, a struggle is ensured. Some sought out to protect their love while some are desperately trying to maintain the crumbling friendship.
The technical part of the show such as the animation and sounds are pretty much acceptable. The animation is clean and decent, pleasing to the eyes.
Some of the complaints I might have regarding this show is probably that more romance can be displayed by the characters. Also, more variety of music can be introduced to give this anime more punch.

I am probably going to break some hearts of the fans with my review but this is something I need to get of my chest. The point is I don’t get why people give this anime such high marks at all. Here is the explanation of my mark.
The Animation: 8
This actually was one of the better parts of this anime. The battles where nicely drawn and had a good feeling of action.
The Sounds: 6
Nothing really special here. The sounds in the battles were quite nice but the intro and outro song where average.
The Characters: 3
This is one of the parts that I dislike most about this anime. The characters have some decent development and history but it all just didn’t make me care for them. In fact I didn’t even feel bad when the first person in the series died. Normally I would feel really bad at such a moment, but instead I felt nothing.
This was quite a disappointment and therefore I don’t really like this anime.
