I'd like to start by stating that I THOUGHT it was a good anime at first, and then it was a big big let down.

I had a bad feeling when I started seeing "lazy" animation everywhere. Re-used pictures. And even worse, whole minute stills. Not few either, quite a bunch of those. Sometimes it's completely silent and the pictures are still as well. It's meant to provide "meanings" behind those muted scenes, but in reality it's more "lazy" than adding "muted meanings".

The animation overall IS quite philosophical but they tried too hard to make it seem VERY philosophical. It's revolutionary in a sense that it's an old anime with a jab at it, but it wasn't done well.

The ending will piss you off. It's nothing but seemingly deep philosophical conversations that does not really lead to anything. It's worse than a filler. I haven't seen the movies yet but I won't. Even if it reveals something that will make you go "AH~" I will not go back to an anime that ruined a good day just to find out what was all the "revolutionary" anime was all about.

Disturbing and boring at best. Thank you very much.

Being in Australia, we get all animes rather late, so I think I first saw this in year 2000. I'd settled in to watch my usual show on SBS and instead, a cartoon started. I thought to myself, "What on earth is this?" I'd never liked anime before and I'd never paid any attention to it; due to having no remote and being lazy, I settled in to watch this show advertised as Neon Genesis Evangelion.

I quickly fell in love with the enigmatic Rei Ayanami. Not just the fact the character herself was adorable, but her voice so quietly spoken won my heart.

After watching the episode that they aired, I was dying to watch more. I ended up going out the next day to buy them all and soon found that Evangelion has so many underlying secrets that it really made you think. I can't say too much because I don't want to ruin it for others!

The characters in Evangelion were great- from the arrogant Asuka to wussy Shinji. I liked them all, and not to mention the Evangelions themselves had extremely impressive designs. Anyone who likes Mecha should really watch this show.

I also recommend watching it a few times as i did. I found things I'd missed before and everything made more sense. If you watch the series you should totally check out the movies too!

This anime is addictive!

At first, I could not understand why many people said Evangelion is THE revolution, masterpiece, award-winning, and breakthrough anime in recent history. But after I compared Evangelion with many amines that we grew up with, like Gundam and Dragon Ball, I would agree that those statements and awards are well deserved. BUT awards does not mean enjoyment, and I was really disturbed with this amine during watching and long-after completing it.

Perhaps the longest-text and reference anime on Wikipedia, Evagelion deserves pride, respect, and has achieved a level of controversial attraction, especially when considering that its birth was in 1995. I perfectly agreed with Hideaki Anno, the amine creator, when he quoted in Wong in 1996 that "It's strange that 'Evangelion' has become such a hit - all the characters are so sick!". Yes, all characters are very sick. Think about all the main characters and their internal desires; Shinji hated his father and wanted to die, Asuka hated her mother, Rei wanted to suicide, Misato also hated her father, Ritsuko hated her mother, Gendou abandoned father's responsibility, Ryouji was a liar, and many more. I also felt badly sick with them too. And actually I had always got a nightmare everytime I watched them it night.

Besides Character and plot, the anime, music and song are good, even comparing to today's standard. The design of Evangelion and their enemy, Angle, is very unique and standout, compared to other typical robot anime.

As a normal person and a father, I would definitely not want my children to watch this anime, and I myself will not watch this anime again in my life. Yes, for deep characters and uniqueness, it deserves score no less than 8 or 9. But for enjoyment score, I can only give no more than 2.

I would say with confident that Evangelion is one of the most unique and sick animes of all time.

I’d like to start by stating that I have not yet watched the Evangelion movies that were made after the series and that this is a review of the series in and of itself. That said, this series was disappointing to me, and I didn’t have high expectations in the first place. Normally I’d list the show’s good qualities before tearing it down, but in this case I feel that would be pointless, as they can’t begin to make up for the show's short-comings.

The real problem that I had with this show is that it set me up and then let me down… hard. The first half of the show built up what looked to be the makings of a good mystery, with a nicely varied cast of characters, and some great opportunities for character development. The last half of the show did not deliver on any of this hidden promise.

The conflict: Angels, giant monsters, are attacking the earth. Nobody know why. Evangelions, giant robot, creature hybrids are the only things that can stop them, and they can only be piloted by specific kids.
>Where do all these angels come from, and what are they really?
>How can the people say that the last angel that they killed was the last one, when they don’t even know where the angels are coming from?
>Why are they attacking in the first place?
>And why do they call them "angels" and not "demons", or "freaky, giant monsters"?

These questions and many more simply sit in front of you unanswered throughout the series. At first questions like these kept me watching, like the old carrot on a string trick, but if the donkey never gets to eat the carrot then it just rots and the donkey writes a negative review to reflect how disappointed he is, or at least that‘s what I‘m going to do.

Then there are the characters. When introduced, all of the main characters seem very different, and it's expected that as time goes by the characters, and by extension the viewers, would discover things that they have in common. Sadly this show takes that to the extreme. By the end, every main character seems to meld into the same self-loathing, self-pitying, person with severe abandonment issues. All the sane characters are either killed off or faded out to make way for the parade of self-pity. Additionally this is the first show I’ve seen where the characters’ personalities actually get more 2-dimensional as the series progresses.

Lastly the end, don’t worry just in case anyone reading this still plans on watching it, I won’t give away any specifics, but I don’t think I could give it away even if I wanted to. I had to watch the last couple episodes twice just to be sure they really happened, and I was still confused, it was like someone slipped me some magic mushrooms or something.

On top of not living up to its potential, I feel that this series committed the sin of not resolving anything, which, regardless of a franchise’s plans to possibly release movies later on, is unforgivable. It is for these reasons, that I must give this series a 3 out of 10, for leading me on and wasting my time.

Even after watching Evangelion multiple times, this anime still continues to deeply impress me with its wonderful psychological introspection. At the same time, what weighs it down are certain crucial implications that prevent from Evangelion from being flawlessly satisfying.

There is a general lack of clarification and explanation of many key aspects in the plot. Why can only children pilot Eva? How and why did Kaworu team up with Seele? What is the point of preventing third impact if both third impact and the Instrumentality Project basically result in not existing? What are the origins and reasons of the angels to come and destroy mankind?

Other problems include the slow development of the plot (until about episode 16), stale monster of the week progression (angels), the annoyances of the repeated military/ tech dialogue, and the radical polarization of the main characters. The series also needs to portray the main characters as "humanly realistic"; rather than narrowly depicting them as extreme personalities: Shinji being a shy crybaby while Asuka is a crazy self-centered bitch. Nevertheless, Neon Genesis Evangelion is truly an ingenious series made ahead of its time.

8/10

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a good anime but, frankly, I think its quality has been blown out of proportion. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it, or felt it was boring or anything (well, it was a tad boring at times)... but it's really not a 10/10 anime for me. You see, for me to truly like an anime, I have to like the characters... and the characters if NGE simply suck.

The series would not be what it is without the characters being the way they are, but does EVERY SINGLE main character of the series HAVE to have parenting issues? Maybe I would have found it bearable if only some characters would be that way, but no. Shinji? Neglected child. Asuka? Neglected child. Misato? Neglected child. Rei? Neglected child (has no parents). Ritsuko? Neglected child. Gendo? Neglectful parent. Wow, that's real refreshing. You see, you can classify them all in one of 2 groups: Neglectful parents or neglected children. NGE does make a point of addressing the issue of parent-child relations... but I think it's done way too clumsily (and exaggeratedly) to be interesting or compelling. It's not boring either, but many times I found myself thinking "just quit your whining and move on". I guess it depends on what you're looking for in the series, but since I wasn't looking for "how much can a parent screw up his kids" (I've already got plenty of that in real life, thank you very much), I can't say I appreciated it. It may even have been less bad if not everyone whined about it, but the only one who doesn't is pretty much Rei, but she's supposed to be expressionless anyway (and she does whine, in her on way).

The other story of NGE, the part about saving the world from the Angels and the sort of self-reflection on what's wrong with people, is actually a lot better. Now that's what I was looking for, and that's what the series delivered. The whiny characters were annoying here as well, but the story is interesting enough to make them bearable, and I have to recognize that, when they're not moping around or feeling sorry for themselves, NGE's characters can indeed be rather cool. The balance between dialogue, thoughts, intrigues and action is quite good as well, the story is intricate and requires a certain degree of concentration to follow. In this context, some of the character's whining seems more justified... I mean, can you really expect Shinji not to burst out crying in battle when he's scared out of his wits by some otherworldly creature? Not everyone can be as tough as Shonen anime characters tends to be, and I found the change rather refreshing.

The other thing that's bad about it is the ending, in which pretty much the story is thrown away to focus more on a dive of the psyche of th characters. Since I didn't like the characters, I didn't appreciate this much, either. Sure, it's well done and moderately interesting... but so what? What about what happens after the Angels? SEELE? NERV? the EVAs? Hello? End of Eva does take care of that, but I felt that the last 2 episodes of the series were more like fillers than anything else. The franchise isn't done with the series, but the series itself does have one hell of a lackluster finale.

The show's animation is pretty good, although they seem to have used plenty of stock footage and recycled animation, especially in battle sequences. It can be rather annoying, but it could be worse. Besides, for being a relatively old show, some of the animation's quality may have been nigh-revolutionary. The series' soundtrack is quite good as well, although there are better out there. One other thing that's been blown out of proportion here is how good the OP theme is... I thought it was OK, but definitely not one of the best ever. Adequate? Yes. Good? Yes. But not something I'd listen to in my free time, thank you very much.

Although a crap ending and lousy characters would get a series a pretty low rating from me, I really do feel that NGE's main story is done well enough to compensate for most of this. It's also good that it even uses some of the characters' weaknesses to strengthen itself, although some of that could have been spared. In fact, the character use is the very reason why I like both Rahxephon and Fafner (the alleged NGE ripoffs) better than this series, even though I did watch this series before either of them. They all have their issues, but they're all different and they don't suck. But talk about that belongs to their respective reviews. For the moment, I think it is fair to rate NGE with an 8/10. It is better than just entertaining, but it does have a few important flaws. It's still a good show, though, and I really wouldn't recommend it only to people who don't like deeper, serious anime or who care a lot about characters... because the ones here are pretty terrible.

Evangelion is the greatest and most groundbreaking anime I have ever seen.

Story (10/10): I am continually floored that someone created such an amazing and unique story. Nothing else ties religion, philosophy, and psychology so brilliantly together with a story about unknown enemies appearing to destroy the Earth. The anime does well to immediately pull viewers into the story by intriguing them with a giant robot battling an extremely powerful invader. It maintains its interest by focusing on the hardships of its characters during and outside of the battles, all the while slowly revealing pieces to the overall story. Then, about halfway through the series everything takes a complete turn for the worse, as the characters find themselves thrust further and further into their own despair, all while being pawns in a game between powerful people whose interest lie outside of simply defeating the Angels and saving humankind. The plot twists and turns, with each revelation only leading to more questions and more intrigue for the viewers. There are many that will criticize the original ending, but after a closer look and further analysis it is actually a great and fitting ending to this epic storyline. Ultimately, Eva will need to be watched more than once (and the last two episodes should be watched again after seeing the movie "End of Evangelion"). But that is partially why this story is still great, you can watch it several times over and make new realization and formulate more ideas regarding the plot. It is difficult to describe this story in any more words, but I believe that it is a rewarding story to watch. Ah, and despite the dark plot there is fanservice.

Characters (10/10): No other anime explores the psyche of its characters in such depth. Viewers get to explore many different avenues of thought from the vast array of characters in the show. This is particularly true for the main characters... Shinji is the best at portraying the reluctant mecha-piloting protagonist, who struggles to find his place in the world and the meaning of his existence. Asuka is the famous fiery, red-head, badass pilot, whose confident outside personality is really just a cover for her own dark past, which makes her as emotionally and mentally unstable as Shinji. Then there is the equally infamous Rei, the original seemingly emotionless and mysterious girl, who grows to develop and portray her own thoughts and beliefs. Misato is the adult who tries her best to care for the Eva pilots despite her own emotional and personality shortcomings. Then there is Gendo Ikari, Shinji's father who is a villain viewers cannot help but to hate for the way he treats his son, as he is too busy running NERV in a way that will benefit his own personal goals. As the story moves on we see many other characters with their own struggles. All these characters develop and grow throughout the whole series whether it is for better or for worse.

Art (10/10): Aesthetically, this anime felt ahead of its time. The characters were all well done, but the EVAs and Angels dominate the artwork. It was impressive how unique every single Angel was designed. The design of NERV's headquarters was also very interesting. Even the explosions created by the Angels were artistic, as they formed into crosses. This was everything an anime fan could hope for from 1994 graphics.

Music (10/10): The opening theme, Cruel Angel Thesis, is still one of the greatest OPs of all time. The different variations of "Fly Me to the Moon" for the ED is a seemingly odd, yet surprisingly sufficient choice for this anime. The background music and sound is really the greatest; Everything from the Eva's battle theme to the beautiful pieces of classical music chosen throughout succeeds in supplementing this amazing story.

Entertainment (10/10): This anime is easily addictive, especially as you get further into the story. As described above, the story and its characters will really draw you in and wanting more. It also stimulates great intellectual thought and is an anime that can be seen many times over. Evangelion never gets tiring, which is why it has earned its status as a timeless classic in the anime world. Viewers will be astounded, and will be hard-pressed to find anything on equal level to this anime.

This anime can get very dark and with the religious factor it may not be for everyone. But for those that do not mind these kinds of genres I would highly recommend this anime. Neon Genesis Evangelion truely deserves its perfect score, (10/10).

After all these years, I've finally decided to write a review of the series that really kick-started my interest in anime. I can't believe that I first watched this as a 14 year old... time flies!

SPOILERS BELOW

Story 10
It started off with a glimpse of the Angels, the extra-terrestrial beings whose purpose was the eradication of humanity. My first impression of this was "same old, same old." It appeared that way until around the 4th and 5th episode where things really start to diverge from the usual. Then it gets philosophical from episode 14 onwards. Then from 19 onwards, the story just gets absolutely nuts. What initially was robots and aliens, becomes a deeply complex show with elements of religion, philosophy (huge amounts of it I might add), history, global conspiracies and the effect of human relationships. How Hideaki Anno managed to involve all of these into a show that ripped up the book on how to write a compelling and engrossing story is beyond me, but the result is this = one of the most original spins on the genre of mecha anime ever created.

Characters 10
I've always rated an anime show on the degree of character development that one views in a show. Throughout the entire length of the show, you get to see the main characters change and grow. Shinji appeared a weak coward who ran away from his responsibilities. By episode 19, he finally had to balls to face his father and do what he was destined to do... save the world. Asuka seemed like a overly confident/arrogant pilot who had a huge chip of her proverbial shoulder. By episode 24, she was in a pathetic, catatonic state in a hospital bed. And Rei... she was a human doll who didn't care about her life, let alone anyone elses. By 23, she finally realizes just how much she cares for Shinji and finally sheds a tear just before she sacrifices her life for everyone. This is just a short summary of perhaps the greatest ever characterization seen in a TELEVISION series (let alone anime). Since watching this show, I have (unfairly) compared other shows to EVA in this regard. Truly unparalleled.

Animation 10
Hard to think that this is 12 years old. A test of time is being able to put on a video/DVD of a show and being able to comment on how much it has aged. EVA in my eyes, has passed this test (it STILL looks superb!)and will proceed to do so for many years to come. The battles were awesome, the explosions detailed. Granted, the final 2 episodes were issues of contention for the fans, but I'll give GAINAX the benefit of the doubt. They made up for it in the End of Evangelion.

Music 10
Along with "Cowboy Bebop", EVA is the only other show where I've gone out and purchased the entire soundtrack. Shiro Sagisu was fantastic. Every episode had a key musical moment. Like the BEAST music when Shinji breaks free of the 12th angel's control, or the almost tranquil piano assemble when the lights go out against the 5th. And who can forget the use of Handel's Messiah and Beethoven's 9th with the appearance of the 15th and 17th respectively. Never before has a score had the effect that EVA's had in greatly enhancing the viewing experience. Scenes, characters, angels and robots all have their own music. I'll probably be slated by purists, but the music here is on the same level as John Williams "Star Wars" score in that regard.

Overall 10
Nothing is ever perfect. Nothing in existence can ever be. For example, for many fans (myself included), the final 2 eps almost destroyed the reverence I had for this show. If the show had ended there and then without the intervention of the movies, I would have rewarded a 9. However, after seeing the movies I've now come to realize just how insightful and creative they were with their ideas (and their lack of 'budget'!). GAINAX will probably be remembered for many other endeavors, but this quite simply is their greatest ever achievement.

For that, they've already achieved immortality with one of the best anime shows ever. Not quite perfection, but given the choice, wouldn't you be happy with the next best thing?

There are monsters destroying the world, whom of which are known as Angels. However, a secret organisation known as NERV, located in New-Tokyo has the ability to destroy the Angels with giant robots, known as Evangelions, that are piloted by teenagers. The main character in this anime is Shinji Ikari, who is a very shy, emotionally weak and lonely teenager and is forced to pilot an Evangelion in order to save the world from total destruction.

Because of the first few episodes, it will make this anime look like another clichéd giant robots versus evil forces thing, but it's not a clichéd one. This one is extremely different, after each episode you see, the deeper this show gets; it will become more philosophical, psychological and the characters will turn into people who you can care for. And a lot of the music in this cartoon is so haunting, that it's beautiful and some of the cover versions of the song 'Fly Me to the Moon' are really good, which are heard in each ending credits sequence.

However, one of the only things I didn't like about this anime was some of the animation, which went a bit dull at times and the last two episodes, which didn't properly wrap up this fantastic saga, but thankfully it was perfectly (I repeat, 'perfectly') ended with the movie NEON GENESIS EVANGELION: THE END OF EVANGELION.

This anime is an anime I'll never forget. With a thanks to NEON GENESIS EVANGELION, it has made me in love with anime ever since.

This anime was so good! I can't believe how much I enjoyed this anime, even though this is not my favorite anime it ranks in my top 10 which is why it earned a ten. The story is incredible and it leaves you begging for more after each episode. The story progresses nicely throughout the plot and many secrets are revealed before the series end. The end of Neon Genesis Evangelion in my opinion is better exemplified in the movie End of Evangelion. However the character development is incredible, probably the best that I've ever seen. You see how the characters become the opposite of what they once were and why some characters show little development throughout the plot. I recommend this anime to anyone with the time.

Looking at some of the other reviews for this anime on the site, I am amazed, and have to wonder if these people watched the same series that I did. Calling NGE the greatest, or one of the greatest animes ever is so far from my own opinion of it. I simply can't imagine what these people saw in it, that I didn't.

The music was good throughout. Actually I'd say that it was the best part of the show. Though the transition at the end of the show wasn't well done, the music was always enjoyable to listen to. It was a bit jarring at times, we just finish this big battle, then here comes the ED music, that totally doesn't fit with what we just watched. But it didn't take away from the enjoyment of the music.

The story was ok, though with so many plot holes bad dialog, that in order to watch the show, I had to completely suspend my disbelief, and not pay attention to the fact that the various characters and scientists don't have a clue about what they are saying.

The animation was good, especially for being made more then 10 years ago. I should say, it is exceptional, especially considering it was made so long ago. The action sequences frequently didn't make a lot of sense, and were often repetitive. I know lots of shows reuse action sequences. But it doesn't excuse this one doing it. Still they were usually fun to watch even still.

Finally characters. I actually didn't have a problem with most of the characters in this show. Sure they did stupid things occasionally, and more frequently said stupid things. But still they were enjoyable to watch. However included in this show is the main character, Shinji. One of the biggest whiners, who is self absorbed and depressed, and depressing throughout the entire show. I have never been more irritated with a main character then I was with him. Almost every single episode, he makes you want to smack him upside the head. If I was one of the people around him, I wouldn't have been able to resist, pummeling him daily. He is, in my opinion, the single biggest obstacle to enjoying this series.

All told, this was a series that having watched it, I will never watch again. It has too many problems, and the main character to me, was not sympathetic at all. I am amazed that others wrote about re-watching this series, because once was enough for me. It has its good points, but in my mind, the bad is sufficiently bad, that it outweighs the good.

First of all, I must say that this series is amazing. The pure genius that so effectively delved into the meaning of human conscious brought out a revolutionary new perspective.

Plot
Evangelion is a wondrous example of the effectiveness of planning ahead. After watching the entire series and the movie, you get a new appreciation for the writers and how even from the beginning they effectively set up every single conflict both internal and external to culminate into a final mind wrenching conclusion. Simple acts that may seem completely innocent and hardly noteworthy, upon later reflection, reveal hidden insight into the depths of the human soul.
[10/10]

Story
In Evangelion, much of the city has withdrawn into a giant underground haven, much of which is "upside-down" on the cavern's ceiling. However, as soon as any threats are past, the buildings recede and begin to show their faces to the light of the sun. This idea that every aspect of the city is geared towards their ultimate protection and survival. After many years, the angels once again return to earth, bringing with them destruction and terror. Humanity's only defense is the Evangelion, a giant robotic suit piloted by specially selected individuals capable of linking with its control interface. The story quickly turns from external to internal conflict as each of the characters are brought to face their deepest fears, or the fate they have avoided for so long. Each episode reveals more and more of the true nature of NERV. With only a few episodes devoted to filler and recap, the series effectively draws you through it from beginning to fantastic end.
[10/10]

Characters
This is one of the few areas where there is any room for improvement. Every character has a past, and each must face it eventually. The tensions and turmoil caused by their despair or grief wrought history add the little something extra every action/fighting show needs. The detail and precision with which the creators went into establishing their past's is amazing. The depth and complexity of the characters makes you feel like they could very well be real.
[9/10]

Animation
While the skill and artistry that went into the animation is absolutely superb, the repetition of certain scenes does tend to grate on ones nerves. However, this repetition is not totally unwarranted. while it may be slightly annoying, the way that their life falls into a certain regularity prepares the story for a sudden turn of events, and when the smallest thing changes, you notice how their everyday routines change to encompass it. These scenes provide a base for witnessing the effect that a single event can have. Moving past that, the animation of the fights is incredible. The way that the Eva’s movement changes over time as the pilots become more synced with them is subtle yet powerful, and the artistry that went into creating the images of the different characters is profound. From the way Shinji looks when he’s depressed or when he seems on the verge of a mental break down, to Rei and her constant neutrality the artists put detail and effort into every scene. Even without showing their faces, they can bring you into the mood of the scene, such as embarrassment or fear.
[9/10]

Music and Sounds
The music was just as powerful as the rest of the show. From the intro to the battle themes, Evangelion can turn your thoughts in the proper direction with its intricate sound system. You can be so wrapped up in the show that you may not even notice the change in music, but your sub-conscious does and responds accordingly, preparing you for a fight or an internal drama.
[10/10]

Overall
Overall this series rates a 10/10. I have never seen a more compelling series, both dramatic and exciting. The only reason I think its possible for someone to NOT appreciate this show is if they fail to understand what was being said about human existence and awareness.

Evangelion was a pretty cool anime and I really enjoyed mch of it. Typical Mecha type man vs. mysterious aliens etc.

Animation[10] This is one of the points where this anime really excelled. The art work was fantastic. The mechas in this series are probably, in my opinion, the coolest designed mechas of any anime series that I have seen yet. They only had one problem that I didn't like. That was that they are plugging in to power them. So they run and jump around everywhere with a power cable comming out their butts.

characters[7] The characters were ok. Nothing really special about them from any other anime. They are your typical anime type characters. There wasn't one that I could say I liked more than the rest or was inspired by.

plot[5] This is where I really have to rate them down. I don't believe they really thought this out well. As the synopsis above says it is one of the most controversal animes ever made and the reason is the plot. Now if you are a person who believes in any kind of god in real life I would say it is likely that you won't like the ending. If you don't believe in anything then you might like the anime. It is kind of a toss up. Honestly it seemed to me like they just tried to think up a controversal idea and make it into a really deep anime but instead of doing it well they just crapped it out their butts with little thought.

In conclusion I rate this one down from what others did [7]. It had so much potential and I think the creators botched it sadly. However I think a rating of 7 is generous as well and I rate it that high because frankly...the artwork and battle scenes are among the best mecha animes I have ever watched and so I really liked that element. If you can ignore the plot's ending then I think it is an anime that would be enjoyable.

This anime is by far one of the greatest animes of all time!

10/10 story- though many would say the story is just a cover up or frame just to have a mecha show. I say that the story of evangelion is one of a kind. Anyone who is into deeper meanings in everything will love this story. The religious references and story of how the world ends is one I will never forget. I love how they begin the show with Adam and Eve and finish it that way too!

9/10 music- the music from this show is good. It's very catchy and sticks in ones head. I also love that they used a Frank Sinatra song for the ending credits.

7/10 animation- though this show is so memorable the animation does need a lot of work. I always find dubbing errors while watching this show, and I always find parts that are being reused. Even though we have new technology today I still do not want anyone to go back and change anything.

A very good show. Though you might have to think a lot while watching, it's a must see!

Neon Genesis Evangelion is possibly one of the hardest anime series to draw a straight conclusion from. Many people are still pondering the true meaning of the series' end today. While it may seem a little intimidating due to the complexity, it is a series that should not be missed.

I suggest that Evangelion is viewed by an older audience of at least 15 years or older.

Story: The story progresses quite nicely throughout the entire series. With only a couple fillers to recap what has happened, the story progresses to the final episodes smoothly, developing the characters and bringing about twist after twist. In my opinion, the story suggests many religious and psychological themes. Many references to the psychological themes are displayed by representing theories that Sigmund Freud introduced. It's a really intriguing story that pulls you into the Evangelion world and introduces new ways of thinking about the world around you. The only real disappointment with the series is the ending, where you get two episodes that cause you to draw your own conclusion with little closure. However, this was addressed in the film End Of Evangelion.

Animation: Compared to today's animation, Evangelion isn't as crisp and technologically advanced, but that is understandable. Even so, I believe that the animation of Evangelion is something that every anime fan should view. The scenes are very detailed and flow smoothly from frame to frame. I don't believe that there is a scene in the entire series where you question what happened or why a certain scene appeared in the series. The character's and the evangelion's are very descriptive and depicted very well also.
[ 10/10 ]

Sound: The sound is very well done. The musical score is amazing. I have the OST and enjoy listening to it anytime. When you add the action scenes of the Evangelion fighting and it just adds to the overall experience. The voice acting is also superb. I really enjoy both the Japanese dub and the English dub the same. Both display the characters beautifully and allow the viewer to relate to the characters more. The sound effects are also well done. I don't know how many different anime series I watch now and think about how many sounds are familiar from Evangelion.
[ 10/10 ]

Characters: The characters were very well done. There are three main characters named Shinji, Asuka, and Rei which all pilot the main Evangelions. Throughout the series, you learn more about each character and about their past and how they're related. Shinji is displayed as the weakest character and draws a sense of pity from the viewer which almost makes you feel like you can relate to his problems. He's a great protagonist because you watch him grow stronger throughout the story which causes the viewer themselves to question their own strength, in my opinion at least. Asuka is a stronger character that has her own problems. Rei is on her own level of characters. She is hard to describe without witnessing her development yourself. All the characters develop very well throughout the series and creates attachment easily. This is one series where it is difficult to forget the characters.
[ 10/10 ]

Overall: While much of the anime is hard to comprehend, re-watching the series will clear up many questions. In my opinion Evangelion is one of the greatest animes ever created. Its influence is seen throughout the anime world and continues to be a pinnacle of anime even today. I believe that everyone who is into anime should take a look at this. It has the ability to change your view on everyday life.
