SPACE UNIFORMS
In the much larger schools, it's common to see the separation of classes or divisions by looking at differences in the uniforms. For example, the students at the school aboard the Foundation II: Stellvia from the space-themed anime, Stellvia of the Universe, all have different styles of uniform depending on their class and what field-of-study they are persuing. Not surprising since it wouldn't be wise to put someone from the medical or nutrition study courses in the same outfit as a space pilot.
COMPARISON
Some schools are strict in their rules and regulations regarding uniform manner, but in more modern days of today, those regulations are becoming more and more lax. Schools pick the general style and colors, but give the students more freedom in HOW they choose to wear the garments and how they choose to accessorize.
