School-Daze Comedies

Geek/Misfit/Oddball
Miss Ichijou is the Queen of Anime Oddballs. | Konata is of otaku, for otaku and by otaku. |
Watabe is stepping up for the manga-fans and artists. | And poor Osaka is just too odd to be considered normal. |
If you wanna talk oddball misfit, then look no further than Mahoraba ~ Heartful Days's Occult Club President (a personal favorite of mine) | And then there are those who sense spirits. Michiru doesn't really DO anything odd or weird, but she's a mystic amongst a group of very normal teenage girls. |
Student Council Members/Club Leaders/Elite Classmates
Student Council members, like President Shizuru Fujino, are regarded as the school's elite. | They are wise beyond their years, are admired by all the students and faculty, and trusted to keep order. |
Often they have weird plans up their sleeves. | Much like some club leaders with ulterior motives for their groups. |
Others are just plain maniacal, ruling over the school and controlling information to be later used as blackmail. | Miyagami Academy has the Best Student Council, where the students run the school like a big-brother government. |
Jindai High has a traditional student council run by some very professional individuals. | The Big Four at Stellvia are not only regonized within the school, but the whole solar system. |
Unapproachable Cool Girl Everyone Admires
Miss Sakaki is the shining example for this category. Her academic and physical prowess make her the idol of the school who no one feels worthy of talking to. | Natsuki, on the otherhand, chooses to be socially aloof and avoids contact with her classmates. The others in her class are pretty much afraid of her. |
Makoto is also anti-social, but more in the brooding, intolerant sort of way. People below her are a bother and would only slow her down. | But Koyuki is another opposite... the nicest girl in school with the best grades. She's another example of someone who the other kids feel unworthy of talking to. |
Then we get into the beautiful-people crowd where girls like Tominaga enjoy the attention. | All the guys admire and want to ask out these girls, but have that inferiority complex that makes them keep their distance. |
Mirei is the belle of the Drama Club. | And Sayuri is the belle of her whole school. |
Tomoe is near the top of her class. | Boys watch Yasuna's every move with admiration. |
Ryoko Asakura is an A++ in comparison to the other ichinensei/freshman girls at North High. | The pedestal Chikane's classmates put her on is so high that she may need a helicoptor to take her seat. |
Tsukasa Nishino is the blond beauty with attitude that not just any guy can openly ask on a date. | Ayaka Machida is a top student at the Stellvia Foundation. The only people who she'll listen to are the other top students. |
Obnoxious Rival with Sympathetic Backstory
If anime has taught us anything, it's that even "bad guys" have their own struggles in life to overcome. | They usually have family issues or troubles in their past that cause them to put up a tough front against all others. |
Take Ayaka, for instance. Her brother died in a stillbirth when Ayaka was very young. It was that event that made her so edgy and antagonistic to anyone who stands in her way of finding a new little brother to pamper. | Or Nao, whose promiscuity is only because of the struggles and turmoil she endured at a young age. She uses her HiME powers for uncouth reasons, but it's what makes her feel like she's gaining back what she once lost. |
Miu, on the other end of the spectrum, is just insanely jealous of her competition, but once you learn more about her, you can begin to empathize. | Mari is also feeling the sting of jealousy, but she also becomes someone to root for later on in the story. Love triangles are never pretty. |
Lady Kirche brings obnoxious taunting to whole new heights. Talk about a royal pain. | And Iori's burning passion for competition sets her into this category, but she too has a caring side. |
Poor Shiho, she may be annoying, but she's still human with human feelings. | And Princess Mashiro (from Mai-Otome, not HiME) is a spoiled brat, but hey, being the ruler of a nation has it's own stressors. |
Of all these girls, Momoka probably has one of the most sad backstories that almost anyone with an older sibling can probably relate.
Rival with Unexplained Skills
Blondes are rare in real-life Japan, so of course the "strange" girls in anime have to be blond. | And usually if there's a young kid walking around campus, she has a fishy story, too... especially if she's a blonde. |
Skilled rivals are usually quiet and introverted... until something weird happens, then they spring into action. | Glowing hair, weird eyes, crazy language/speech, super strength, incredible speed... some even sprout weaponery! |
Mahora Academy's Chachamaru has trouble keeping her robotic secret with her head-gear. | The maiden college intern isn't fooling anyone at Momotsuki Academy. Who DOES she work for anyway? |
Comic Relief
Even in super-serious anime, there's always someone in the cast to lighten the mood, like Haruna whose speech flubs and overreaction to everything always provide plenty of humor. | Kashimashi's Jun is a cheery, rambunctious... ummm... girl? She's always getting her classmates riled up, especially her closest guy friend, Hachisuke. |
I love Makie because bad things always happen TO her and yet she always gets blamed for them. | The salamander from Pani Poni Dash has zero luck and he always makes his appearance when we least expect him, ~kero |
Oblivious Boy-Crush
Ah, what's high school drama without a little romance? | And for there to be romance, there has to be boys. |
Unfortunately, the boys of anime are usually too distracted to realize the main girl has a thing for them. | They're usually too wrapped up in a task or hobby to be paying attention to the girls vying for their attention. |
Bullies
Wrapping up the character archetypes are the antagonists... | Bullies!! And they seem to always travel in packs of three. |
Junior high school bullies... okay, that's one thing, but in high school now? C'mon, let's grow up, ladies.
