v-boi2002

Bamboo Blade

5th Choice:

I found so much suspense and humor in this show, I actually forgot this was a sports genre until I took a peek at the other staff picks. Bamboo Blade had a great OP and ED and the characters were all cool in their own way.

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann

4th Choice:

F*cking epic is all I've gotta say about this show. Universe-sized mechs? Capes? If you haven’t watched this yet, go spend what’s left of your lunch money on the DVD when it comes out.

Seirei no Moribito

3rd Choice:

Although I found the overall plot to be a little un-exciting, everything else was absolutely well-done. There were only a few fighting scenes in this show, but the stunning visual and choreography of each battle makes up for it. And during the times where they aren’t fighting, they’re showing us a nice loving mother-son like relationship. Aww~

Lucky Star

2nd Choice:

Haha, I’m sure you people already get why I’d pick this. I’ll spare you all the explanations. Lucky Star is 2nd only to Haruhi Suzumiya.

Darker than Black

1st Choice:

I had difficulty trying to understand the story in the beginning, but by the end, I ended up understanding 78 percent of it. At least everything else was noticeably good. Also, if this show is anywhere similar to Batman, then I’m totally bought. I just wish they’d make a second season.

2007 was a very busy year for me. As always, there has been a decent offering to satisfy fans of all genres. Any of the ones listed above could surely make their way into my all-time favorites list, but there are a couple more that stand a chance of earning a place in my heart.

iDOLMASTER Xenoglossia was a modernized version of Neon Genesis Evangelion that featured the cutest character-designs I've seen in many years. Haruka and Yukiho were compelling reasons to keep up with this futuristic mecha-series. On the opposite end of the anime scale was the delightful calming anime, Sketchbook ~full colorS~, a peaceful, serene series about a group of art club kids and their daily lives. Ironically enough, however, my favorite aspect of this show wasn't the peace and quiet, but the wacky antics of the two class clowns, Tanabe-san and Himura-san... plus Canadian foreign-exchange student, Kate, was quite adorable.

I didn't get as far into ef: A Tale of Memories as I had hoped I would, which is why I was reluctant to include it in my top five. This was another cryptically mysterious title that could have matched CLANNAD in essence of being thought-provoking. I will finish it eventually. One series that I did complete, which also merits a mention is Hitohira. I wasn't in drama club when I was growing up, but now I wish I had been. If anything, Kayo has inspired me to be more passionate about photography, so for that reason alone, I must credit this series for having an impact on my real life.

The final series I've partaken in this year is actually out on DVD now, Venus Versus Virus. I've only seen the first disc so far, though the second one is with me now. If the whole series maintains the gripping story featured in the first 4 episodes, I can see this series making its way into my all-times fave list, also. The manga-ish character-design and the enticing reality of Sumire's character has me gripped.

What I Would Have Liked to Have Seen:
- 5 Centimeters Per Second
- Kiddy Grade 2

Seto no Hanayome

5th Choice:

Haha, mafia mermaids... now there's a concept I never thought I'd see. This is just the beginning of what awesomeness Seto no Hanayome brings. It's a comedic love story that certainly never forgets to be funny. What I enjoy most is its mocking of the seriousness of many mobster movies, but also the girls in the show are adorably cute. I have a tough choice trying to decide between Luna and Mawari as my favorite character.

Lucky Star

4th Choice:

Overhyped? Possibly. Overrated? Not at all. It's tough to say why so many fans have taken such a liking to KyoAni's monster-smash hit of 2007. The cute girls helped a lot. The interesting artwork surely contributed. The opening theme certainly leant to its success. But if I had to pick one thing, I think it was the plot... erm, or lackthereof. Compared to the American powerhouse comedy, Seinfeld, Lucky Star is surely "the anime about nothing." The girls of Ryouyou High School are just getting through life... and giving eachother headaches along the way. Many fans fight over who pwns: Konata or Kagami, but I have a sweet-spot for the gentler girls, Miyuki and Tsukasa. All the anime and video game references dotted throughout the show helped keep fans engaged up until the very end.

El Cazador de la Bruja

3rd Choice:

I loved Noir. I loved Madlax. So it is only natural that the third of the Bee Train girls-with-guns trilogy make it onto my favorites list. A rare setting for anime, El Cazador is situated in the Mexican desert. The Latin flavor is an exciting change of scenery and the perfect place for an action series about two girls on the run. Every episode brings a different problem to face, but for famed bounty-hunter, Nadie, nothing is too much of a challenge. Bonus points for Ellis' being so cute.... "yes sir."

PS, I'll be singing "taco taco taco!!" until the next Favorite Series Survey, haha.

School Days TV

2nd Choice:

Story-telling at its absolute finest. At just the precise moment when I was beginning to think I should drop the series about "just another teenage love-story," the plot took a shocking turn that put anime fans around the world on edge. I adored Kotonoha Katsura, the sweetest girl in all of anime, but in order to make her impact on the history of the genre, many terrible things had to happen to her. Many fans hated how this anime made them feel in the end, like there was no justice in the world, but to me, any series that can evoke such strong emotion from an audience is definitely worthy of appearing on my top 5 list.

CLANNAD TV

1st Choice:

I can't decide which I like more: the storyline and its delicate balance of comedy and drama or the cast of lovable and entertaining characters. Doesn't really matter in the end, though, because all the elements combined make CLANNAD my favorite show of 2007. The art, music, and cute character-design drew me in, but the cryptic mysticism in its complex plot keeps me coming back for more. The comedy keeps me smiling, as do the adorable girls.

Xristyan

honorable mentions in no particular order: Romeo x Juliet, 5cm per Second (The only reason this wasn't on my list is because I haven't watched the whole thing yet), Lucky Star, Shakugan no Shana II, Nagasarete Airantou, School Days, Minami-Ke, Zero no Tsukaima 2nd Season, Bamboo Blade, Claymore, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

Gundam 00

5th Choice:

Psh, it's Gundam... why wouldn't I be watching this closely? Though there are some things that do tick me off with some of the characters. But in any case I liked the fact that they made the show more relevant to todays current issues. Makes it easier for the audience to connect with the show...

Kimikiss Pure Rouge

4th Choice:

My slice of life, drama-ish lovey dovey pick of 2007... Something about the characters and their interactions makes their situations very much believable and can be related with... This is what draws me to the show...

Ef - a Tale of Memories

3rd Choice:

Thank god for boredom. Why? Cause if it weren't for that I wouldn't have continued watching this series, and that would have been the biggest mistake I have made with regards to my anime shows... Very Happy Although the seemingly overkill of alternative art style and animation nearly made me drop the series from the beginning the story managed to engross me enough to continue watching and it is the story again that is the driving point of why I would place this show as one of my faves of 2007. And the art sorta grew on me... Very Happy

Clannad TV

2nd Choice:

A healthy mix of comedy, drama, a bit of action (if you would call it that) and a whole lot of MOE! FUKO FTW!

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Laggann

1st Choice:

When the word epic is mentioned this would be the show I would associate with it. The budget they put into this series was definitely put to good use.

Concluding Remarks:

What came to a surprise to, I think, everyone is that 5 Centimeters per Second reached no one's top5! But at least it was a frequent honorable mention or a movie that people hoped to watch.
