5th Pick: Sunako Nakahara
Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge
Sunako is like the others on my list, simply an amazing character. Having been told she was ugly when she was younger, she firmly believes this, and decides that since shes ugly, she shouldn't try to live in the light of the beautiful people, but revel in the darkness of the damned. Unfortunately her aunt who she loves dearly is one of the beautiful people, and is determined to turn her into a lady. Enlisting the help of 4 beautiful boys, who shine light into her dark world. I love the character of Sunako. How she can be bribed by dark things, her constant nosebleeds from looking at pretty people, and her desire to hide in horror and in darkness. And how she really is beautiful, she just can't see it.

4th Pick: Shion Yasuoka
Shion no Ou
Shion is the kind of girl you want to help, to hug, to hold. She's cute, she's loveable, and yet she has a depth to her, granted by tragedy and the scars it left her. Witnessing her parents' murder when she was just a little girl, she had remained silent on the orders of their killer. Unable to speak, she can only communicate through writing, and the way she plays the game of Shougi. Shion easily makes my list of best characters.

3rd Pick: Haruhi Suzumiya
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
What can be said about Haruhi. She is beautiful, irresistible, determined, and strong. She lives life with a zest and determination that are taken to the extreme, and to top it all off, she is God. Its hard to think of a character as good or as fun as that.

2nd Pick: Yoshinoya-Sensei
Hidamari Sketch
Yoshinoya-Sensei is simply one of the most enjoyable characters to watch in any anime. Not because she's a serious character, but rather the opposite in fact, because she is simply so silly. Everytime the principal is chasing her down to force her to do her job, you can't help but laugh. When you find out about her private life, you almost wish you didn't know, even while you secretly want to observe. She is, simply brilliant.

1st Pick: Balsa
Seirei no Moribito
Balsa is the epitome of the ideal strong woman. Tough, and not afraid to take on anyone. Yet she doesn't fit the normal anime stereotype of also being stupid. Shes actually very smart, appreciating the dangers involved in her job, she goes into it with her eyes wide open. While tough, she is also a woman, who looks after, and cares for those around her. All these traits combine to create, Balsa who gets my pick for favorite anime character.

5th Pick: Machi
Nagasarete Airantou
Machi is pure, distilled evil. And what fun watch that is! This seemingly quiet and unassuming shrine maiden is actually capable of summoning otherworldly spirits, painfully torturing her kin with a voodoo doll, skillfully wielding her blowgun and of being extremely selfish. While that might make her sound quite rotten, it provides a great deal of laughs and makes her stand out well among other candidates. I mean, who else teaches others how to laugh suspiciously and giggles when holding sharp objects in her hands?

4th Pick: Shion Sonozaki
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
A cute and seemingly normal girl capable of unspeakable horrors once driven crazy by the combined forces of love and hate, Shion embodies the tragedies of the series she stars in better than anyone. It is true that the revelations of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai take away some of the magic of her character, but seeing Shion's emotions and inner demons spiral out of control in the original series is truly something to behold. Yet in either state, either normal or insane, there is always a certain charm and empathy that is impossible to not feel about her.

3rd Pick: Soushi Minashiro
Soukyuu no Fafner
More than a single, definable aspect of his persona, what puts Soushi in my list is his development throughout the series, which reveals that behind his seemingly cold and calculating persona is a young man of enviable self-control and emotional strength, who is willing to make any sacrifice necessary to preserve the world he loves and the happiness of his friends. While there are many errors in his ways, this socially awkward but caring youth grows and develops throughout his series to become one of my favorite characters of all time.

2nd Pick: Major Motoko Kusanagi
Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex
The brave heroin with a heart of gold who lives in a high-tech world where, she struggles to retain her persona despite living in an all-artificial body... where only her soul is her own. Yet still, Motoko is capable of great strength and empathy with others. Not only is she a kickass cyborg agent, but also a person with both weaknesses and strengths at the center of one of the best sagas in all of anime.

1st Pick: Lelouch Lamperouge
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
My personal all-time favorite character of all time, Lelouch's most shining feature is something simple that many others lack: his humanity. Leaving aside his brilliance and the charm of his personality, Lelouch is a character that is willing to give it all for the sake of his dream. Yet when it comes to shedding his humanity, it is the one thing he never does. Along the way of his struggles he laughs, suffers, relies on others and shows a variety of sides that many others just don't. In the end, he is everything: a loving brother, a ruthless leader, a caring friend, a terrible opponent, a noble prince and a lowly villain, all in one impeccable package. All hail Lelouch!
