FIFTH PLACE (411 POINTS)

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Season 2

Lightningcount12

Season two picks up immediately, delivering well-balanced character development for a large and expanded cast, fluid and well crafted battle scenes with awesome new Gundams (plus Mr. Bushido’s customs), and dramatic emotionally-charged scenes, including brutal displays of genocide in the name of peace and unification. Gundam 00 explores bold new avenues for the franchise, which has led to its successfully rejuvenating Japan’s most storied title. A solid story at this point, with elements still leaving fans guessing, has kept things interesting while viewers are highly anticipating the ending.

I admit I have seen very few Gundam series (83 and the CE-universe ones), yet this is the most realistic and plausible of the franchise I have encountered thus far: the tech on the mobile suits, Gundams, and in general are more believable, none of the characters are perfect or omipotent, and there are plot and character development galore. Gundam 00 S2 features conflict in spades, such as the tension between Setsuna and Marina, Saji and Louise, and anyone else with Celestial Being and their old acquaintances. This series once again explores the themes of humanity, ruin, and hope, but in a more meaningful, understandable, and believable way. As if to prove its popularity, Gundam 00 is already being dubbed in the US, leaving Canadians like me when we'll get to see how they made the translation. So for character and plot development, increased balance in credibility and a great storytelling style, my vote goes to Gundam 00 S2. 00-Raiser, launching!

This series is what I was looking for after the disappointment of SEED Destiny. This series is actually original yet still carries the themes Gundam is so famous for. The second season trumps the first in awesomeness.

Gundam 00 was the first Gundam series I had ever watched, truth be told I wasn't very impressed. I've always been more of the Robotech/Macross persuasion. However then comes season 2 and at first I watched it with a sort of ho-hum attitude. Boy, was I surprised to see a great show that had gained a life of its own, and I realize now that this is thanks to season one setting the scene. Even if it doesn't win this gets my vote for the number one show of the year.

FOURTH PLACE (510 POINTS)

Soul Eater

PURE MADNESS!!!!!!!!! This show has everything. It's crazy, it's funny, it's exciting, it's AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

story645

Maka and Soul are awesome, as are the rest of the cast. Yeah, it's another shounen that succeeds mostly on the strength of its strong characterization, but this one has a plot to match. Tight pacing and non-repetitive story lines keep this one interesting and highly watchable.

Soul Eater isn't your regular shounen anime. The story isn't as simple as it seems to be at first, and it's filled with mysteries and questions. The animations are marvelous as well, and a great effort has been put in it to make it look as good as possible. But what i like most about this anime are the characters. Every one of them has been intriguing so far (who wouldn't love a kid that's obsessed with symmetry?). They all have strong characteristics and never get boring.

Xi-1

This anime series mixes zany characters with intrigue to move the plot at it own speed -- and that provokes its own helping of anticipation to flavour the meal. What I first thought was another Bleach (although that's still among my favourites) turns out to have enough action and twists of its own to keep one on the edge of the seat. It's also a mark of integrity that this series does not rely on big-breasted characters like Blair to drive it. Soul Eater seems to be driven by tension between what the characters believe and passion or insanity. There's the mystery that Kid's looking into, Medusa and Stein, Soul and the Black Blood... just about every character might have something revealed later on. It seems that this could be one of the longer-run series, and only through the characters, plot, and style that make it successful.
