Staff Interview - AJtheFourth

Tell us about yourself

Hi! My name is Emily. Pleased to meet you all!

Where do you live?

Right outside of Burlington, Vermont, U.S.A.

What's your height?

I am five feet tall and half of an inch.

Ninjas or Pirates?

Hnnn... well, pirates make me laugh, but their hygiene definitely leaves something to be desired, so I guess if I had to choose, ninjas.

Puzzles, crosswords, or riddles?

I like all of the above depending on what mood I’m in. Puzzles are great for rainy days, crosswords are good for cars and trains or just waiting in general, and riddles are great for making people laugh or wonder what the heck you're talking about.

As Jonathan Papelbon for halloween.

Favourite colour?

Lobster bisque...mmmmm..

Favourite food and beverage?

Lobster bisque... mmmm. I grew up in Massachusetts and Legal Seafood (a restaurant) has the best lobster bisque I've ever had! Yum! Beverage, probably Long Trail Blackberry Wheat (alcoholic) and green tea (non-alcoholic).

Favourite kind of dessert?

I love all desserts! (Except for pies, yeah, yeah, I know I'm crazy.) I pretty much eat candy for every meal so...

If you can describe your personality in 3 words, what would they be?

clumsy, awkward, ambitious

Do you know how others would describe you?

Ummm... I've often been described as hopeless, which I’m hoping is a joke. Other than that, tiny, tomboy-ish, and dorky? Who really knows what other people are thinking?

Outside of anime, what other hobbies interest you?

I love painting. Vermont is a beautiful place to live, and I live on Lake Champlain, so I try to paint as much as possible. I also enjoy playing piano, reading, fishing, cooking, running, snowboarding, and playing with my awesome dog. As an avid sports fan, I watch a lot of sports and follow both the Red Sox (baseball) and Packers (American football).

What's an odd observance about yourself?

My eyes change color from varying shades of blue/green/grey.

A view of the lake from near my house. Pretty, no?

Your username, AJtheFourth, any particular reason for choosing that as your net alias?

Yes actually. I was about to use another nickname/screenname with the initials A. and J. and it was the fourth time I was going to use it for something, thus 'AJtheFourth' was born. In hindsight, it was a poor decision, since everyone thinks I'm a guy, haha.

How did you get into anime?

My friend Tory and I watched Sailor Moon growing up, and I was hooked from there on!

What are some of your favourite anime of all time?

Oh, that's tough. I really can't choose just one. Sailor Moon, and Cardcaptor Sakura, would definitely be up there, considering that they were two of the first series I watched. I also love The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, CLANNAD, Azumanga Daioh, Lucky*Star, Tokikake (I know, it’s a movie, not a TV series), and xxxHolic.

How about manga?

Love*Com is kind of awesome. I love the romantic comedy aspect, and the drawing style is very cool. I also love the style of the xxxHolic manga, despite the stick-skinny character designs. The detail in Yuuko’s outfits, in particular always impress me. Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei I love for the satire and woodcut-style art. Recently I read the manga Touch, by Adachi Mitsuru (thanks to Jack Grover for the rec!) and it was amazing!

What are you currently watching (anime, TV, etc...)

Currently I am watching pretty much every anime this summer season (for the Summer Preview Guide, look forward to it!) along with continuing Cross Game and Saki from last season.

I also love watching 30 Rock, and Deadliest Catch, and am currently reading 'Saturday,' by Ian McEwan.

Tsuruya of MoHS fame, one of my favorite characters!

Do you have any favourite anime/movie/TV quotes?

Do I? I quote stuff all the time, haha.

My favorite all-time movie quote is from Singin’ in the Rain, and it goes,

"There is nothing between us. There has never been anything between us. Just air." –Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly). I've always found that riotously funny, especially considering the scene it’s in. Singin' in the Rain is my all-time favorite movie.

And my favorite anime-ish quote actually comes from the light novel, The Intrigues of Suzumiya Haruhi. Don’t worry, it’s not spoiler-y at all!

"Whether it's the World Baseball Championship or the Pro Bowlers Association World Championship, I always warmly cheer them on. But I never think, 'Uwah~ I want to play that too!' and join them. Just watching those people do their best makes me have a good mood already. Anyway, that doesn't interest me! So, I should just do what I can do!" -Tsuruya

How did you find Anime-Source?

I was looking for a review for some anime, I don't remember which one, and found this site and the reviews database. It was great because I could submit reviews for all of the anime I'd watched, and get feedback on which new ones to look out for.

How did you end up becoming a staff member for Anime-Source?

I entered Xeno's GTX art competition, and was e-mailing submissions to him. In one of those e-mails, I asked if there was a writing staff position open and submitted a very rough draft of my Kannagi review. Thankfully, he gave me a shot anyway, and here I am!

What are some of your duties?

Annoying people with my newbie questions?

In addition to that, I have the awesome job of getting to watch anime and then writing my opinion on it! How great is that? I try to help out wherever else I can on the site too. If anyone needs help just let me know!

What is the most difficult part of your job?

Probably not posting things right away. I get so excited when I finish an article that I want to post right away, but things always need proofreading.

What is your most memorable moment on Anime-Source?

When Xeno posted my first anime caricatures for his blog. I'd never really done that style of drawing before, so it made me kind of proud. Seconded closely by when Primrose asked if I was doing a Summer Preview Guide. Something about the fact that he expected me to do it made me inwardly go, "Yes! I’ve worked hard enough that someone thinks I'm reliable!"

What are your dreams about?

Oh good lord... ummm... lately or for the future? Lately, they've been kind of weird, there was one pretty good one involving the cast of Firefly and zombies. For the future, I really want to be an established oil painter, see a Packers game at Lambeau, and own a Bernese Mountain Dog.

Other than Japan, where would you want to vacation?

I would love to travel around the world and snowboard/ski different places.

Have you attended an anime convention?

I have not.

Before we leave, is the glass half-full or half-empty?

If we're talking life, it’s half-full! If we’re talking sports, it's half-empty! (I grew up in Massachusetts. Despite recent events, I've learned to expect the worst from my sports teams).

Do you have any final messages, comments, etc?

Ummm... so far working for this site has been nothing but fun and I hope it will continue to be that way. I've met so many awesome people already, and look forward to meeting many more. (Cheesy, no?)
