Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Lagann-hen

Gurren Lagann Movie 2: The Lights in the Sky are Stars * GAINAX * 1 Movie * A-S Link
Scamp
The first Gurren Lagann movie, Gurren-hen, was a bit of a disappointment. The parts it left out detracted from the story and the parts in stuck in added very little. Lagann-hen was the absolute total opposite. They streamlined the movie, cutting out smaller scenes and left a quick-paced masterpiece in their wake. The new scenes, and boy were there a lot of new scenes, only added to the overall awesomeness and what you got was the mind-blowing effect of Gurren Lagann concentrated in this 2 hour movie. This was better than the anime itself. This was just phenomenal

This has to be my number 1. No question about it... why?!? Much like Rebuild of Evangelion, Lagann-hen is a redux of one of GAINAX's greatest works. However, rather than completely remake it from the ground up, the producers condensed all the juicy bits into a 2 hour roller-coaster that never lets up from the word go. Yes, there are pacing issues and yes the fates of some of the characters have been changed. But rather than act as a mere replacement, this should be enjoyed as a supplemental companion with the TV show. In that regard, the movie adaptation took gargantuan steps in escalating the sheer spectacle of one of anime's most enjoyable shows with arguably/literally the GREATEST MECHA BATTLE EVER! So how can a movie surpass a predecessor that boasted Mecha the size of galaxies? Watch this and find out :-) Truly epic, high octane stuff that will get even the coldest of hearts pumping, Lagann-Hen is definitely my #1 of 2009.

Valkyria Chronicles

Senjou no Valkyria * A-1 Pictures, Inc. * 26 Episodes * A-S Link
Fionatje
I liked the humour and the fact that it was a good mix of old military and magic.
tealgod
I played the game and liked how they changed the story for the anime.

Tied for 47th Place (3-way-tie)

Chi's New Address

Chi's Sweet Home: Atarashii Ouchi * Madhouse Studios * 104 Episodes * A-S Link
moonie05
I love it!
Haruhifan
3 minutes of uber cuteness, simple Japanese and even a plot that unfolds over time. Chi is the anime I'd want my kids to see in the future, while everyone can enjoy the antics of all the new cast joining Chi's Sweet family. If commercials were this series instead, I'd gladly never skip over them again!

Natsu no Arashi

Stormy Summer * Shaft * 13 Episodes * A-S Link
Molenir
A fun and entertaining little show, it has just about everything you could possibly want. Time travelers, crossdressing, fun and witty dialog, plus a catchy intro. Definitely one of the better shows from last year.
springshades
The first and last episodes alone are enough to get a vote for this show. These two episodes are fun, crazy, and a blast to watch. More than that, the way that the show handles time travel and the puzzles that it puts together within these episodes is outstanding.

Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

Shaft * 13 Episodes * A-S Link
shikas_shadow
To those who are fans of the Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei series they will find this third season of the series to be just as enjoyable as the previous two installments. Not a whole lot has changed from the previous seasons (which is a good thing considering how enjoyable they were) but at the same time I began to grow tired of some of the more repeated joked played throughout the third season. Fans of the series should defiantly pick this season up and if you've never heard of the Zetsubou Sensei series I highly recommend you watch its entirety, you shouldn't be disappointed.
Shroomman
It's Zetsubou Sensei. Comments should be superfluous by now.

46th Place

Aoi Bungaku

Blue Literature * Madhouse Studios * 12 Episodes * A-S Link
Gobo
A great suspense-drama series that easily stands out thanks to its ability to develop numerous characters over short stand-alone arcs. The storytelling is gripping and told through high production values.
Shinmaru007
Not all of the adaptations work, but anything that produces something as great as "Run, Melos!" deserves to be honored as one of the top anime of the year.

Letter Bee

Tegami Bachi * Pierrot * 25 Episodes * A-S Link
Kyuufox
Like the most of series which I have read before I can expect a lot from the anime, but there are exceptions where the studio which has the series can butcher it, but I believed in it! And my prayers where answered, high quality art, perfect voice actors for the characters, and of course if you read it you know that its interesting and different, I mean come on if you make a mail man look so cool than I'll give you tons of props itself for doing so.
Savara
A fairy tale. Music that makes you wonder "Am I dreaming?", art that can transport you back to your younger years (for the older fans among us ;)) and a strange yet interesting concept... What more can you ask for? Well, hand drawn monsters? Or better done CG monsters at the very least? Sadly enough, this seemingly tiny thing made me drop the show after a few episodes... Why then, am I still voting for it? The atmosphere. It does more than create a hint of that magical feeling, it breathes 'fairy tale'. I might give it another try, just because of that lovely quality...

44th Place

Kurokami the Animation

Black God * Sunrise * 23 Episodes * A-S Link
abc00
The story is good. The fighting scences are very well made. Just that it's quite sad towards the end. Overall, very nice series.
