Chrome Shelled Regios
Koukaku no Regios * ZEXCS * 24 Episodes * A-S Link
Lightningcount12
Chrome Shelled Regios packs the most intricate science fiction world of 2009, with high-powered, well-animated action sequences, and a strong main character. The apocalyptic setting and storyline, which adds an element of "school-life" on the battlefield, presents excitement and comedy at necessary levels to make this show a huge hit for 2009.

I love action packed anime, and when you add a good storyline you end up with a winner. Chrome Shelled Regios has both of these elements, plus some mystery and a fun soundtrack. Finally, it has some of the best "engrish" I've heard in a while, during the sub-anime in this show. Very entertaining.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya S2
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu S2 * Kyoto Animation * 14 Episodes * A-S Link

All hail Haruhi-sama! This season drew much fire from the Endless 8 but that is perhaps why I must give this series my last vote for top 2009 series. You can ask whether or not the endless 8 was really necessary or not but what other series could pull of such a thing and STILL have people continuing to return every week to watch the next episode. Having read all nine available short novels of this series I actually found it quite funny to the extent to which this series took the endless loop and I enjoyed watching the same episode redone over and over again (beautifully redone each time over I may add) as it made us feel the pain of Nagato and it brought back all the memories of the novel. Now granted, I may be part of that only 1% who actually liked that part of the second season and I may be heavily biased towards the goddess know as Haruhi but I actually liked seeing the novel brought to life once more and hope they continue to do so, though I do fear what they may do next...

Putting the time loop episodes aside, this season of Suzumiya was very pleasant to watch--the animation's quality, the characters' amusing interactions, and the plot twists were entertaining to say the least. I especially loved how they planned and incorporated small details of the first season into major plot points in the second. (Case in point, the small reality speech Haruhi was forced to do at the end of her movie.) Now, for the excruciatingly long time loop arc, I just have one thing to say: well done. In the end, I felt the triumph, the emotions, and the rush that Kyon underwent when he finally figures out a resolution to the whole dilemma. I give props to the director for daring to do something that would have endangered the whole seasons' popularity. This may be the reason why others would criticize the second season and ultimately not pick it for their list, but for me, the arc was one of the main reasons that the season deserves to be high ranked.

Seitokai no Ichizon
Student Councils Discretion * Studio Deen * 12 Episodes * A-S Link

A fabulous male lead and his continued bold declarations about making the female members of the student council his harem were what really carried this show and made it unforgettable. It didn't hurt that the girls were all very attractive in design and given distinct personalities of their own to counter the leads constant advances. Overall it made for a fun ride that I looked forward to every week.

This random comedy anime is really great as a stress reliever (nothing beats such a comedy anime). The storyline is pretty thin and they tend to be just in a single room all the time but it really doesn't matter =) The OP and many versions of ED is pretty interesting (pleasant to the ears as well). Overall, I really loved this anime. (Aki-chan rules! Mafuyu is great too!)

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

A very well-researched, subtle, beautiful tale that will be remembered by viewers long after they have finished watching the series for the lovable characters. Delivers the impact of a 52 episode series in 11 episodes - a testament to the craftsmanship of this work.

One of the more original series of 2009, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 is the only one that made me cry. The last few episodes surprised me so much that my opinion changed from just 'liking' the series to 'adoring' it. Mirai and Yuuki are two average children, and because the series doesn't try to show them as anything else than that, it works. The scenario is a frightening one, and the opening and ending theme manage to create the mood that fits this anime - filled with problems but also with hope. My absolute favourite of 2009.

Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou
Natsume's Book of Friends 2 * Brains Base * 13 Episodes * A-S Link

The first Natsume Yuujinchou series was an amazing artistic accomplishment that had me coming back every time; Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou only works to make it even better. The designs of the creatures are usually quite incredible, and the music always spot-on with the mood of the moment; working together, these two elements really made me WANT to see what would happen next, and how Natsume would deal with it, forever torn between his identity as a member of the real world and that of the world of spirits.

When Natsume Yuujinchou season 1 had ended, I was pretty sad and thought that it was the end of it, but when I read that they planned for a second season I was overthrilled. I couldn't stop think about it, and surely this was as good as season 1 or even better. What I loved about this anime is the atmosphere it projects and how it puts you in a different state of mind. It's soothing without being boring, it only makes you feel cozy, happy and warm inside. I honestly love this anime, it's amongst the best anime I have seen.
