Angel Beats!

One of the stand out and most hype series of 2010, it is easy to understand why, from the genius that created Air, Kanon, and Clannad comes a story about trust, acceptance, and friendship among young people that came to the afterlife with a regret that made them unable to move on. Truly a wonderful series.

Side-splitting humor and the gut-wrenching drama is the only way I can think of the explain why Angel Beats is one of the best animes of 2010. Not to mention the level of character development and story pacing achieved in 13 episodes is a feat in and of its self.

It is rare that I enjoy a short anime series, as I always feel it isnt time to develop a story. However, Angel Beats successfully does that, and the ending was quite touching in my opinion, as it built up the main character well. Mixed with slick animation, comedy (loved the ep with the rocket chairs) and also very good music (especially the OP by Lia) it made this a hit this year.

Obvious choice, Key has a history of legendary animations that will make you laugh one second and fall to pieces the next. Clannad, a classic, is a fine example of Keys dedication and genious. Its obvious they know what they are doing and angel beats is just another masterpiece added to their long line of successes. The only downfall of this piece is that it was too short. There wasn't enough time in 13 episodes to cover everything in this plot.

'Angel Beats!' with its eccentric cast of characters, excellent character design, and counter-intuitive plot and devices countered every expectation I had. This makes it one of the less predictable offerings for the year -- and unpredictable means 'interesting.' The story goes from a one-dimensional struggle between Yuri's SSS and 'God' to a well thought out development of most of the characters, alongside a deep message about life and death. I especially enjoyed the developments of Yuri, Otanashi, and Kanade, including the final revelations, which brought the story all the way around to the opening -- My Heart, Your Beats. On the subject of music, the whole anime had great composition, including offerings from in-show band, Girls Dead Monster. For once, an ending I did not see a mile away. That is always a plus. This series earns my vote the hard way (not that it didn't have cute characters, because it did).
