Very emotional series, and I became attached to several of the main characters as the show progressed. The animation was for the most part well done. The ending was one of the best conclusions I've seen in a little while and actually made me tear up. The opening and ending themes worked very well with this show.

It starts slow but it starts picking up pace and when you started to relate to the characters you are just sucked in and can't stop watching. This one was a real surprise for me. It caught me off guard and I became so emotionally invested in this show I was truly sad when it ended, not just because of the ending itself but also the end of a great well told story.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

This series singlehandedly produced a cult following, spawned numerous parodies and memes on the Internet, and has forever redefined the magical girl genre. No one was prepared for the underlying dark tones and complex topics that would be explored amongst the girls after the seemingly generic introduction, and their endless struggle to escape from such a fate. To say anything more about this series would only lessen the impact the story WILL have on the viewer, so I'll just leave off by saying if there's one Anime series you must absolutely watch, it's this.

It seems like your typical mahou shoujo anime at first... but it's not. It's a deconstruction, a realistic look at the whole magical girl theme. It has a gloomy side to it and shows that not everything is as happy and wonderful as it may seem. It's emotional, it's wonderful, and every character has something lovable about them--so hard to pick a favorite.

The rapid change in tone through the first three episodes artfully began a short but rich tale of friendship beyond time. If not considering the plot twists and a more realistic take on a traditionally straightforward genre, Madoka Magica sticks to the core of the mahou shoujo anime. The female casts, though the ends of their struggles are tragic, are empowered through their hopes and empowering the audience to stand by their heroine and watching their seemingly futile struggle against despair then ultimately triumph. Rather than rebelling against a well-defined formula, Madoka Magica brilliantly re-defined the genre and pushed it to a new height.
