Anime Boston 2005
by AngelKing

Page: 1/3

Friday

I traveled to Boston by myself on Friday morning. I got on a Chinatown bus and had myself a nice 4.5 hour trip. Fun? No. Boring? Yes. I got to the hotel around 12pm where I met up with two of my friends Bill and John (you might remember them if you’ve read my Anime NEXT ’04 review). I dropped off my suitcase in their room and we were off to the con.

I ran into a problem when trying to pick up my pass, no one knew where I could pick it up. We ran around outside of the con until one staff members finally told us that it can be picked up in the same room as the regular passes. When we got to that room, there seemed to be problems with their computer systems, but that was quickly resolved and I finally got my pass.

We then met up with another guy named Griffin and decided to walk around the convention area so I could get a little more familiar with it. After we had our fill of walking I stopped by the Dealers room and snapped a few pictures while it was still empty. It’s quite eerie to be in there without people pushing you and freaking out over some crappy new Naruto keychain.

The first panel we attended was Japanese Automotive. The two guys that hosted the panel showed us a slideshow of cars they saw in Japan with some of the craziest body kits I’ve ever seen. They explained the different type of modifications that can be made to cars and the genres that certain modifications fall into. They also showed tricked out big rigs. How do you trick out a big rig you ask? Just attach as many lights to it as you possibly can!

Now it was time to get some food. The hotel and the convention center are both attached to a mall with a food court. So did we eat at the food court? No way! We’re way too smart for that. We decided to take a mile long hike in a random direction in search of food. It was a long, hot and boring walk and the only thing that kept us from turning around was the thought of walking all the way back with an empty stomach. We finally come across an Italian place and that’s where we ate. The food was not that great and we felt like total morons for not eating at the mall.

When we got back to the hotel, we spent a little while at the video game room, which was a bit smaller then I expected. It was about half the size of the one Anime NEXT 2004 had. After sucking at all the games there (the only console I own is a SNES, go me!) I’ve had enough of video games and found my way to the Adult Swim panel. As expected, this was a good panel, since Adult Swim can do no wrong. They talked about their shows a bit, every one cheered when they said they would air the new episodes of Family Guy. One of the main focuses was their new short Robot Chicken, which every one should watch because it’s hilarious.

Now it was time for the Anime Music Video screenings to begin. This was the first main event that I went to and it was organized very well. The people were seated on time and no matter where you were sitting, you had a clear view of the screens. The AMV’s themselves were ok, I didn’t see anything that gave me goose bumps. The organizers knew what they were doing by leaving the action and comedy stuff until the end because let me tell you, if you haven’t seen the anime on which the drama and romance AMV is based on, more then likely you’ll be bored out of your mind and since I don’t watch much (or any) drama/romance anime, that’s exactly what I was, bored out of my mind. Once the action/comedy stuff came, they were all the sweeter.

After the screenings, we decided to check out the dance. Now if you’re into jumping up and down to techno and house Japanese music while drinking water, then this is for you. If not then there’s really not much else to do there. We left in a hurry and folled around in the empty Artists Alley section.

Jon, Bill and Griffin all shared a room and since I didn’t want to pay for an entire room by myself for the first night, I decided to bunk with them for the first night. Since there are 2 beds per room (Jon and Bill on them since they were the ones that paid for the room) and room for only 1 cot (Griffin got that since he was there first) I was left to sleep on the floor… lucky me. No night would be complete without some one getting pranked and since Jon was the first to fall asleep, he was covered in a healthy dose of toothpaste… fun times.
