Ergo Proxy

February * 23 Episodes * manglobe Inc./Geneon

This anime is simply fantastic. Not only is the plot enriching, but each episode provokes serious thought regarding several themes, especially the idea of existence. Ergo Proxy is at heart, a philosophical action anime, much like Ghost in the Shell, but in some ways has characters even deeper than Ghost in the Shell's. For example, Pino's character (a small robot girl, basically) is one that evolves throughout the anime. One of my favorite scenes of the anime is when Pino first learns the meaning of loss. The other characters all feel truly genuine, and that is what truly sets Ergo Proxy above and beyond all other anime this year.

While this series probably didn't appeal to everyone, it is a true gem. An enticing combination of philosophical depth and great ambiance, it stimulates your brain cells like no other show released in 2006. A rewarding masterpiece that strikes a chord in any 20th Century philosophy lover or those who like a splash of postmodern angst. The colors, characters, animation and opening and closing themes are highly enjoyable as well.

Very rarely does a series come around that is both well written and visually appealing. The sad thing is that phrases like "well written" and "visually appealing" don't give this series justice. On top of everything else, the characters of Ergo Proxy are really what make this series great. I can't help but keep watching Vincent Law, Pino, Re-L, and the rest. This is a true masterpiece in every sense.

Wow! I never expected anyone to make an anime predicated upon French philosophy. "Cogito Ergo Sum," in English, "I think therefore I am," the famous phrase coined by Descartes is at the heart of this heart-pounding, mind-boggling, action-packed series.

mouse_catcher
Gothic atmosphere, apocalyptic story, monsters, hot chicks, cute kids, and great fights.

Utawarerumono

April * 26 Episodes * Oriental Light & Magic

I always enjoy original tales in original worlds, and this series definitely does that. The audience discovers things about the world along with Hakuero, coming to appreciate everything about a place where the beings have both human and animal characteristics. Again, there's character growth and opportunity. Plenty of suspense, intrigue, action, romance, AND comedy to be found here. Another strong story that keeps on strong right until the end.

Izeque
Utawarerumono takes a different approach to anime. Instead of a man making his own path and his own choices, this man is forced into different situations. This unique approach coupled with fluid animation, nice in show music, and interesting characters makes for a win.

Girls with animal ears and tails? CUTE! Makes you wanna watch it, love it and remember it, doesn’t it? But that’s not all, behind those ears and tails hides a fabulous plot, war scenes that reminds you of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and a fairly unspeakable harem that brings in its charm in her own way. Well, watch it, and best it in your list!

The story revolving around war was a big plus to me seeing how I am a small-fry war-fanatic. Action was great to me and character development was decent. There were a few interesting parts to the story but most of all the parts near the end stuck out to me. I really did enjoy this anime and it made me want to eat some honey while watching it for some odd reason.

Compelling storyline for the most part, likeable and memorable characters and consistent animation quality make this a very solid series overall.

D.Gray-Man

October * 52 Episodes * TMS Entertainment

This show has all the right things going for it: an original storyline, superb animation, loads of action, enough humor to offset the sufficently dark "horror" feel, a lead character you can really relate to, an enemy you enjoy loathing, and music that really captures the feel of the world. If you love the manga, you'll love the show. And if you haven't experienced either, you're really missing out.

The D.Gray-Man anime, whilst not as wonderfully executed as the manga, is a real treat. People have accused it of unoriginiality; the main plot basically being 'stop the bad thing happening by stopping the bad guys from doing it', but its the way this is executed; throughout each individual mission undertaken by the exorcists, that is truly unique. Its subtly gothic mood is very nice, Allen is a wonderfully adorable character we can easily sympathise with, and the ending theme "Snow Kiss" is simply a great song.

I typically don't enjoy darker anime, but I really loved this one. The characters are all very unique, and the combination of serious and playful moments is quite enjoyable.

Its concept is nice. The way the characters are brought forth is amusing and the flow of the story isn't bad. The plot itself is interesting and I would love to see how it all turns out in the end. The nice thing about the show is that it has a little bit of everything: drama, comedy, action, suspense.

CrimsonShadow2
D.Gray-Man probably doesn't get a lot of credit like it should. It's about a boy who was cursed at a young age, and now lives to destroy akuma who plague the earth. As his journy goes on, he finds what he truly desires and his role in life. Its a really good anime that anyone could enjoy.

Air Gear

April * 25 Episodes * Toei Animation/avex mode

What's not to like about a good old growing-up story told against the backdrop of an awesome street sport, especially when you throw in some intrigue, romance, and raging hormones? The animation is clean and the music really adds some depth to the presentation. Overall, this show is definitely the best expression of "teen life" to come out this year. It's really too bad that they stopped only part-way through the manga plotline.

l2andy
Air Gear has by far some of the best graphics out there. Already knowing the storyline and all due to the manga, I felt discouraged for the first few episodes. However, after Ikki starts getting into more battle, you get a lot more than what you expect. I have to say that I was really pleased by the anime.

Yami_Leto
Air Gear is good because it shows what could happen in the future if the world really had Air Trek skates. I'm normally not into sports and tricks, but even I wanted a pair of ATs after watching this series.

NickKosmo
Awesome senes and a total under-dog story. The main character also showed a slight bad-ass self despite being the hero of the story.

GroovyP
Man, this was one anime where I anticipated each episode and it was also the first one I watched when many of the on-going series were released at the time. Firstly, Simca was HOT. Well, they all were, but Simca the most. The animation was top class, so that was really appriciated. Air Gear had a good mix of action, comedy and a hell of a lot of fanservice. To me, Air Gear was the best medium sized series (~26 episodes) anime of 2006.

School Rumble Second Semester

April * 26 Episodes * Studio Comet

wskyung
When I first saw the corny, childish-looking characters and heard the high-pitched voices, I was going to turn off this anime and never watch it again. I am so glad that I decided to watch through an episode --- I was hooked ever since. This anime is absolutely hilarious, and the characters are all so unique and loveable!

rich33087
Funny, comedy, and joyous anime of the year. Each episode will bring laughs and tears to the audience as Harima and Tenma continue to act random and stupid but funny to make this an interesting anime.

Happymania124
School Rumble Semester 2 is one of the best romance comedy anime because it succeeds in remaining a comedy throughout the entire series, whereas most comedies ceased to be comedic after the first half of the series. For example, although I have read the manga already and know the plot, this anime still manages to make me laugh over the same plot, setting, and events over and over again. This is truly one of the best comedies of 2006!

joki9121
Hilarious… need I say more? I do? Okay then… the animation was actually pretty good and people say it’s just the same as last season but that’s good for me. Loved the series and I can’t wait for season 3! Go Yakumo!!

hyungwannabe
This anime series deserves all the acclaim it can get. It combines everything in a funny, touching, and entertaining package that most anime watchers can appreciate. Firstly, it makes many references to other anime and anime styles. Next, it is genuinely funny - dialogue, characters, and animation. Kudos.
