i'm pretty sure that lucy didn't die at the end. that last scene where the dog was happy to see the figure behind the door helps prove that she didn't die. why else would the dog be happy to see who ever was behind that door since lucy was the only family member of that house that wasn't inside. i haven't gotten around to reading the manga yet because i'm lazy like that but i'm pretty sure lucy is still alive.

don't think theres any news about a 2nd season though, even though everyone would love to see one and this season only covered a little over half the manga.

ooo i loved elfen lied, one of the strangest animes I've seen. totally unique with the whole diclonious and vector stuff as well as the story of the characters. I'm reading the manga now, its even darker than the anime, although, i do like the anime art work better than the manga.

The open ending helped lend the anime a lot of its charm. To give it a second season would spoil the fun behind it.

I have to agree, a second season would have to be incredibly good to avoid polluting the experience of the first series. I've read some of the later manga and it gets a bit apocolyptic and silly. I don't particularly feel the need for that to be added onto an excellent anime...

I've only read a few chapters of the manga, found it interesting, but the series it's self is definitely my favourite anime. It's entertaining with lots of action and plenty of gore, though that is toned down.

This is definly the bloodiest anime i saw.
At first i thought: Does there really has to be this much nudity.....
But luckily that wasn't what made the anime good.

I liked the story and Nyu is just so cute and adorable. The ending left a question if Lucy was alive or not. If only they just opened the door and shown us who was standing there. Would feel so much better if it was lucy Very Happy

Elfen lied is definly one of the animes that i will remember.
Tho i wasn't to impressed about the opening song. The ending one was ok.

The first time I saw Elfen Lied, I really loved it. However, after many of my friends watched it and they told me that it was crap and started analyzing all the contradictions / manipulations in the show to me very elaborately and I re-watched it, my opinion about it changed. Now I don't like it that much anymore.

Anyone know if there is gonna be a second season?

Because ive been reading the manga, and there is a lot more story line. Now this is going to be a huge spoiler, so dont read unless you want to know,
In the manga, Lucy/Nuu survived, and fused into one personality, its Nuu, and she can talk and everything now, there have been no signs of lucy showing again. Also, the leader of the group trying to kill Lucy, remember how he showed that he had horns? Well hes got a daughter that he had experiments done on, and she is incredibly smart, and by using her, he is trying to take over the world. He exploded a missle over japan with the Diclonian virus, and wants to make everyone a diclonian, and him top man. But their still trying to find Nuu/Lucy, who has lost both her horns.

Whew, but less other things, their is a new bad guy, who is trying to find Lucy, and he is pretty messed up. In the manga they also have another girl living with them, forgot her name, but she has bowel problems.

Im just curious if a second season is in the making, because their is definitly enough storyline, and the left an ending for a second one.

The way the director made the last scene was perfect.
Just follow me here.....

He shows Lucy fighting the cops but he only shows the bullets and her horn just flying through the air. Now then i thought "she is dead"

Then he shows the others at the house not expecting a visitor while someone is at their door. Ok not so strange but the dog was really happy of the presence of that person behind the door. Now watch the 2nd episode i think when Lucy meets for the first time that dog. The dog went like crazy about her.

After that the director gave us the final blow....while Kuto goes to the door...the clock starts working...i think he wanted to tell us that everything are going to be just fine. That clock is like Lucy. It was broken and now its fixed. It has come back to life....much like Lucy who was thought to be dead by all of us. And the selection of the clock was not an accident. Nyuu really like that clock and she was always playing with it.

From all of these clues i have come to the conclusion that the person behind the door was Lucy. Not to mention that the posture of the person is exactly like Lucy's.

Did i convince anyone? Smile

Chapter none. The anime and manga follow paraller up to manga's chapter...63~64 (more or less), but then the Anime makes up its own ending, while the manga still goes on.

Okay...it's going to be long. So bear with me...

Elfen Lied is a very manipulative work with lots of violence. And unlike Texhnolyze, Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal, and Berserk, Elfen Lied does not use its violence to enhance the anime. Instead, it uses the violence to sidetrack viewers from the contradictions in the show. Indeed, this anime contradicts itself all over the place. I am going to go into each characters into detail:

- Lucy: First of all, do you know why the creator introduced 'Nyuu' into the show and only put 'Lucy' in the spotlight very sporadically? Because they wanted to manipulate the viewers to like Lucy as a character just because Nyuu is so cute. You see, most viewers like to see cute girls frolicking the screen, doing dumb things (as evidenced to Ayu from Kanon and Misuzu from Air. Though both of them are shallow as a puddle, but because they love to 'oops-trip-fall' and say "Ugu" or "Gao", viewers tend to overlook the fact that they are very shallow characters and like them because they are 'cute'. Of course, myself excluded), it is no surprise that the majority of viewers love Lucy heads over heels just because she pees over her pants, can say nothing but 'Nyuu', 'Hai', and 'Kouta', and have an intelligence and mentality of someone who is three years old.

So once viewers like Nyuu as a character, the creators started to reveal the backstories of Lucy bit by bit. At this point, most viewers would tend to think that Lucy is a heroine, not a villain, and would sympathize with her no matter what she had done. However, the fact is..Lucy is a villain. When she broke out of the lab, she killed many people whom she should not have killed. For example, that clumsy office girl. Or when she tried to regain the energy in episode 3, she sucked energies from people around her.

Now, let's take Bando and Kouta's professor out of the list of the characters who were harmed by Lucy. Both characters attacked her first, so I don't mind that Lucy injured Bando and killed Kouta's professor in return. But look, she killed Kouta's father and sister, and that's the fact. That alone, is an unforgivable attempt. Hence, Lucy is a villain, and she does not deserve any sympathy. Yes, she has a tragic backstory. Yes, she has a reason why she killed Kouta's sister and father (anger and jealousy over a single trivial misunderstanding). Is that a sufficient reason to justify her action? No. Should we sympathize Lucy? Hell no.

- Kouta is an unrealistic character. To put it bluntly, he is just your typical boring harem male lead with a humongous heart (always invite people into the house, for shallow reasons). Like Yuiichi of Kanon, Kouta suffered the same symptom Yuiichi suffered: lost memory syndrome(TM Razz). There is no way one can forget such important incident such as parent and sister being killed in front of him. Man, and he is so forgiving. He is a person whom even if you cut his arms out with a chainsaw, he will still forgive you. To support this evidence, I ask you to refer you to the scene before the climax in the series in the 13th episode. At this point, he already remembered that Lucy killed his father and sister just because of jealousy. Now, I ask you this question.....if you were Kouta, if a girl who killed your father and sister was in front of you and ask you for forgiveness and love, would you love, let alone, forgive her? I don't know about you. I sure as hell won't. Now look what he did. Oh, he embraced her very warmly and said, "But you brought me a lot of good memories too". What could her remember? He has such a bad memory that he even forgot about who killed his father and sister. What's more, he only had played with Lucy for a few days when he was a kid, and he met Nyuu/Lucy only around a week ago. Can you forgive a girl whom you only have spent 10 days max. with if she killed your father and sister intentionally? Okay, to be fair, the similar incident also happened in Rurouni Kenshin OVA: Trust and Betrayal. (Kenshin Trust and Betrayal spoilers)

Quote:
Kenshin also killed Tomoe's fiance, and Tomoe fell in love with Kenshin afterwards. However, you must bear in mind that Kenshin killed her fiance because he was an assassin.....and he was 'assigned' to kill him. In an other word, he did not kill Tomoe's fiance because of his own personal vendetta. And at first, Tomoe wanted to kill him, as evidenced that she agreed to be a spy to her uncle to live with Kenshin and find his weakness. However, when she gradually knew him for months (I repeat, MONTHS), and learned that he is actually a good person, she started to change her feelings towards him gradually from hatred to love.

Now, this is a convincing development, because
1) Tomoe initially hated Kenshin
2) She realized that Kenshin did not 'kill' her beloved one because of his personal vendetta, but because of his duty,
3) They spent months together (in an other word, the time Tomoe spent with Kenshin changed her bit by bit)
4) So at the end, it is understandable why Tomoe forgave Kenshin.

Now, look back at Kouta VS Lucy case....the way Kouta handled this incident was full of bull because
1) He was not even slightly angry when he learned that Lucy killed his father and sister.
2) He knew extremely well that Lucy killed his father and his sister intentionally only because of jealousy and anger.
3) He only spent 10 days with Lucy (i.e. not enough time for him to develop any feelings towards Lucy)
4) He sincerely forgave her (yes, he did not pretend that he forgave her. Because he embraced her very warmly, at when she was shot at the end, he looked very sad).

Thus, Kouta's action is unrealistic, and full of bull.

Not only Kouta and Lucy's incident is manipulative. So do other characters, as well....let me go into some of them

- Bando: That insane gunman. He is in this show just to shock the audience. He has no backstory. He always disobey his boss's commands. Is it realistic that the army would promote such person into a high rank? Hell, no way.

- Mayu: Now, let me confess. I sympathize Mayu as a character. Oh yes, although I know that her story is full of bull, I still sympathize her. However, her behavior is unrealistic. Backstory-wise, Mayu is a character who has the most devastating backstory. She got sexually violated by her stepfather, and when she complained this to her real mother, she got slapped. Okay. Fine. Then, she was found walking around town very clean, and with a lovely dog. Last time I checked, homeless people are very unlikely to be clean. This is fanservice: catering to the audience. Showing the things viewers want to see: clean, cute, and kawaii. And the minute she got invited into Yuka's house, she immediately (I repeat, immediately) became a very happy, cheerful girl who has no sign whatsoever that she used to experience that kind of incident. I am going to draw a comparison between Mayu to one character from Now and Then, Here and There (if you have not seen NTHT, do not read the below paragraph quoted in white):

Quote:
Sara, from NTHT, suffered the same incident Mayu suufered. Before she was raped, she was a talkative (at least, she was more talkative than after she was raped) girl (as evidenced that she initiated a conversation with Shu in the prison). However, after she was raped, she changed to a pessimistic, moody girl. She did not hesitate to kill that soldier who tried to rape her. She ran away from Hellywood, cut her hair short, and settled in Sis's village. And she was not talkative. Instead, she became antisocial, wearing a sad and pessimistic grin on her face. That is the consequence this experience left on her personality.

Now, look back to Mayu. She walked around town, acting cute and lovely, even after she was raped. After she was welcomed into Kouta's harem, she immediately became the happiest character in this series. Take her sad past away and little about her will change. Of course, Elfen Lied put her into this series with some 'child abuse' issue, so that people will think that this show is 'deep'. Oh, it could have been deep, if she did not act that way she did in this series. To put it simply, Mayu and her backstory are just there to manipulate the audiences that Elfen Lied is a deeper and more thoughtful show than it actually is.

- Yuka: I'm not going to bother talking about her. A really boring, cliched character. A girl who is just there so that there would be a love triangle. A girl who only can say 'Baka', and express her feelings she has to Kouta by resorting to physical violence. The more I think about her, the more I think she should have been left out because she is just there so that there would be more flair to the bullcrap romance between Kouta and Lucy.

- Mariko: She is also another character created to manipualte the viewers to cry. A girl who was abandoned by her parents, locked into the lab because she is a diclonius. Oh, I could have sympathized her, had she not been such a bitch. Look what she did when they released her. She killed a woman who took care of her in the lab straight away. Is that something a 'good girl' would do? Hell no. Then she went around with her wheelchair, killing tons of people, giggling all the way like a sadistic whore, "Hee Hee, it's so fun. It's so fun." Then the last minute, Kurama appeared, telling her, "Mariko. I am your father. I love you". Then she changed, in a fraction of second, to become a good girl, crying "Papa". Is this development? No, it is manipulation of the hardest core. Should we sympathize this bitch? No way.

- Nana and Kurama: Oh, I admit. They are okay characters, but two of them cannot carry this show on their shoulders by themselves.

Elfen Lied is defnitely far and away from the most touching anime ever, let alone the best anime of 2004. But I'm not saying that it is something completely shit either. It's just....a manipulative, below average series. In my opinion, the best anime of 2004 is Monster, followed by Gankutsuou, Gundam Seed Destiny, and The Place Promised in Our Early Days.
