frozen> Men at Work did the very famous...(infamous in Oz)...tune titled "Land Down Under"
Want me to sing it? =]
And Simon Cowell is that english bloke who was one of the judges on the American pop idol......the one well known for his harsh criticism...

Bowser> NO please dont sing "Land Down Under" lol, they play it too much in rotation down here, Its Australia's 2nd National anthem. Simon Cowell is pretty funny at times on US idol but at least he's honest lol.
i watched on the current affairs show tonight about flag burning.
what do u guys think about it?
i personally hate it, the people that do it and i think they should be deported.
if they burn the flag of the country they live in, that shows they hate the country, the laws, the values and virtues, the decisions and the people that the country is.
so, i think they should piss off.
because, if they hate this country, they must obviously hate it too.
maybe its just me, but i think of myself as a bit of a patriot.
i love this country and have a murderous hatred to those who try bad mouth this great land of ours. ^^ _________________ [img:567:138:151453bb6b]http://www.anime-source.com/upload/uploadFiles/wahagifsda.gif[/img:151453bb6b]

frozen> that was such a touchy song he did~
lol, well I love Land Down Under... its just so damn catchy~
Anni>
Well, Im not against it~Lol
Im not sure about the Australian constitution... but in the American one, it would be an infrigement on rights to arrest or deport anyone who does so...
Well, in this country it isnt much of an issue.. because unlike Australia and USA.. this is a small country with a more or less liberal government...

Ani> Flag burning is a symbol of disrespect to this great nation, people work hard to live in this free country where war is not thriving and individual rights are given, The youth that burned the Australian flag is a symbol of how stupid and ungrateful our generations has become, and for anyone who says they are not against ppl who burn flags, should be ashamed of themselves.
Bowser> its a catchy song, thats why we love it hahahaha.

I don't believe in flag burning either, because it's not very constructive. However, I can understand why people may resort to it (not that I would necessarily agree with their cause). As nice as Australia is, it's not perfect and a burning flag raises much more of a ruckus than a well constructed logical and even emotionally resonant argument (unless you're as good as Martin Luther King).
As unconstructive as it is to burn the national flag, I think that debate should be encouraged because as American journalist Edward Murrow (the guy from Good Night and Good Luck) believed, a questioning and discerning citizen is the truest patriot.
And I also can't help but add that flag burning is not the only way a person can abuse the flag. To hijack the Australian flag as a symbol of racism and prejudice is also an abuse of "Australian values".
Bowser> =.= you use small 'l' libera as if it's a bad word. The imdb forums are a scary place. I haven't noticed it in Australia but many of the overseas (particularly U.S.) users use "liberal" as if being liberal is bad in itself. There is no bad or good in "liberal", nor in "conservative", or even in "American"
Actually, there is evidence of that mentality in Australia (although it is on a much smaller scale). In Australian newspapers, no less! In the Sydney Morning Herald, no less! Somehow, no matter what they are supposedly addressing, Miranda Devine ends up bashing bicycle riding, eco-facist, snobby elitest, ABC/SBS watching, latte-sipping, socialist pinko lefties in half her editorial articles.

frozen> Well you know, Im gonna sing it anyways~
Do you come from a LAND DOWN UNDER?~
Where women glOw and men plUnder?~
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thUNder?
You better run, you better take cover~
=]
quos> I agree with what you say...
Burning a flag of a country dosnt necissarily mean you hate it... but it sure is a great way to get attention and show dissatisfaction with a government or unfavourable policy... especialy in a conservative country...
I use a small 'l' because theres no need to use a capitol one~o.O
Like I use a small 'd' for the word democracy....or 's' for socialist or 'c' for conservative, etc...
It also helps to not get confused with party names that have such a word in their name... such as the Conservatives... or Liberal Democrats...
And I have nothing against the word 'liberal'~I quite like it~lol...if anything, being called a conservative in this country is often negative...
