well, recently, i came upon the declaration of independence in my textbook, a historical american document, and it got me thinking. theres that famous line:

all men are created equal and entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

but in the world today, is everyone still entitled to happiness?is everyone born equal? (race, gender, economic conditions etc.) can the family you are born into affect your success in life?

im not just talking in america, but all over the world, i just want some opinions on what you guys think.

Egalite, liberte et fratarnite------> this is were the americans got equality, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. ~from the french!

...and are we realy equal? well america, from what i have learnt and seen on tele, is still very far from these goals. And France has colapsed into a gueto war of racism at the moment.

So the question is, are we all realy equal? the answer is no.
Nobody in the world is equal in any way! (even identical twins!).

But i think we musnt think about "are we equal?", but rather "can we treat each other equaly?".

I will post more once others have posted, these are the kinde of debates i love, great one ladyarakune!

Everyone in the world is created equal.

Whether man recognizes that, is a completly different subject.

We create too many boundries in sub-divisions in our head.

Ah Ha! I chalenge this!
I am assuming that in this case you mean human rights are equal, well this is not the case, sorry to say (and this may sound cruel) but a disabled person does not have the same rights as most, simply because they can not do what most can. This is not to say that they are inferior (i would never say that), but they would have different rights protecting them.

If you mean biologicaly, well...i dont need to argue this point, its obvious that this is not true.

And religiously speaking, we are not equal either. Nearly all religion says to watch out for ppl who are not of thet faith. This is what caused amny holy wars in the past.

You know when they formulated the Declaration of Independence, they still considered slaves as things to posess. So much for equality. But that isn't just an American problem. Pretty much everyone in here is guilty of that. Yes, that means you. Or do you seriously care about some obscure civil war in Africa? Yes? Then go ahead and write a letter to your prime minister, president or whatever. If you truly believe that all people are equal, then do something to prove that. "These people have nothing to with me" doesn't work in that case.

Equality is determined by wealth. It's not nice but that's how the world works. "Money makes the world go round." they say. Society is a pyramid. Sometimes someone can go up or down one level, but everyone else has to stay where they are. If society as a whole wouldn't exploit the weak then industrial nations would suffer resource shortages. Wool, coffee, tea, spices, wood, fruits, high-tech stuff made in asia... all the stuff that comes from 3rd and 2nd world countries would be several times more expensive if those who are producing it would get the same money as people in Europe or USA do.

Do you really want that?
It's sad but I'm not so sure about it.

And btw. it wasn't the Americans who got their ideals from the French, but the other way around. American revolution was 1776, French Revolution 1789. The ideas were carried over the Atlantic by French soldiers who joined the Colonial forces in the War of Independence. But the founding fathers certainly got some of their ideas from European thinkers.

EVERYBODY is BORN....... not equal...

Well, it all depends on the society you live in......

Actually, everybody is born in equal.. but just that they are not treated equal

But if you say that everybody is born with equal chances and opportunities, I think that's a very big NO!!

Well, that's all I have to say.

Equality was created to make the weak feel like they have a chance in life, no such thing as equality, we buy the same meal or items but all of them are actually unique and have their own things that make it different.

Everyone is born equal but we all have diffrent values... ok maybe I suck at explaining. As humans we are all born equal, but life is diffrent and you have diffent set of choices.

Take a moral question for example, 2 people are drowning 1 is on close to finding the cure for cancer or something, the other person is just a normal office worker. And you can only save one.

See what I mean? As humans they are equal but life changes their value

eisenmeteor> on the other hand, the person could still fail finding a cure for cancer and the other could be the next president of america. Life is too random to be able to predict and assume in such a way.

Anyways, we are equal in the fact that we all have basic rights, and individuel ones also. In a court of law, you will be judged fairly, even if u are a criminal.

But aprat from this, we are in no way equal, we are all individuels.

...having said that, the world still makes a mockiry of justice= 3rd world countries, racism, homophobia, etc, etc.......

Hehe estonians were slaves for 700 years until 19'th century. And we are guilty of bringing slaves into USA? lol..

Many have asked the same question. Dostojevski asked same question in his "Crime and Punishment", should thousands die for one genius who could change the corse of the future? how sacred human life realy is?
(should make special thred for this question Cool )

Now to the point. Of course we aren't equal as it's said here in numerous times Smile But i think the question should be asked more specifically, for example: "equality - the fruit of the natives or everyone?" . Otherwise we can just say that oure equality is fixed with biological standards.

You can see this fake equality when americans discriminate against the Colombians, to the black people and to arabics. seems that those things in the declaration of independence are just nonesenses words, specially for some americans.

Bowser: Then again even if he did become the president of america what says he's a good president. My point was that I belive that we're born equal however we're not born with the same oppertunites, family etc. One might be born into a rish family and have the money to pay for expensive studys. Another may not have the same chance but might be good at sports and be able to make a living of that. Someone else might not have any of those, maybe be born without the chance to even go to school. That's why I think my life, your life and everone elses have diffrent "value" but we're still equal as human beings.

There's no way to say one life is more worth then the other, that's something that changes depending on the person. But that's not what we're talking about here right.
