|
|
Anime and animation in general have grown a long way since a couple years ago. More and more people are tuning into anime and it shows considerably.
For the past year (2003), Inu Yasha has stayed as one of the most searched terms on the internet in Canada according to Google. It came #3 overall in the year and it is still going strong this year, hitting #1 searched term for some months. Its no surprise here as Inu Yasha is one of the most popular shows being shown on YTV (a Canadian cartoon network) at the moment.
Cartoon Network in the US has also made some huge strides lately. Their "Adult Swim" targeting youths and young Adults has become an huge force in the TV industry. Making headlines, Adult Swim led by shows such as Futurama, Family Guy, Inu Yasha, Witch Hunter Robin, Wolf's Rain, Detective Conan (Case Closed), Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, The Big O, Cowboy Bebop and Trigun have killed the ratings in the 18-24 age group beating other mainstream shows such as Jay Leno by 36%, David Letterman by 87% and giving Conan O'Brien such a hard fight that he regularly pokes fun at the cartoons.
When you look at those results, it is quite impressive. Anime has grown tremendously and $80 Billion worth of anime related merchandise were sold world wide. Cartoon Network has shown the way and it looks like YTV is trying to follow. It is rumoured that YTV is in negotiations with Bandai to bring Canadian Viewers Gundam SEED, SD Defender, Witch Hunter Robin and .hack//SIGN.
So Canadians... look toward your TV screens in the near future =) |

Cartoon Network has also done FLCL which was awesome and they showed Outlaw Star, and BLue Gender (edited of course ). They also show Sea Lab 2021, Aqua Teen Hunger Force and a few other small ones. I love Cartoon Network, I hope they could bring Excel Saga into the programing. From what I remember the Adult Swim guys loved FLCL which is awesome.
It sounds like Anime is growing for other poeple so maybe prices will drop or thell go up because of demand
They have also gotten more episodes of Detective Conan, Wolf's Rain and new episodes of Inu Yasha. Yes but id need cable to watch them and I dont. |

The recent popularity of animes could be due to Animatrix too, that really widened the anime viewer base. |

Nice. I just hope they won't do the same thing they did with Inu Yasha and Dragonball Z (showing 10 episodes for 2 months, then add 10 more, and start the process again).
They have been airing Inu Yasha since last october and every time i watch it, they are below the 40th episode. |

Quite possibly because they are airing only season 1. I *think* they will air season two this year?
and according to Pepperidge, he thinks .hack//SIGN will replace Witch Hunter Robin next season. _________________

Tech TV's Anime Unleashed is far less edited and has better shows as well.
As for the popuilatiry, the less they Americanize(look at the hatchetjob they did on Azumanga Daioh - it's almost too sad to think about) and the more they give us real shows that aren't Poke or Digi - junk, the more it grows.
I'm old enough to remember when the original Macross show came out - and it was the biggest thing on TV for several years. Compared to the He-Man and Smurfs and other rubbish that we had to suffer through, it was the "real deal"(and it still is worth seeing today). The only thing that came close to it at the time were old Thunderbirds reruns(which I'm amazed they are still showing - lol)
Btw - they butchered it as well in the movie that just came out. Ackkkkk.
Macross was the first animated series, btw, where they showed the "good guys" actually accasionally getting killed. At least here in the U.S. English voice-acting wasn't too bad, either. Sometimes they get the voices right, and sometimes they don't. Okay, most of the time they blow it. Still can't get the voice of the teacher in Azumanga out of my head - (goes off to watch the real version...) Cheery and bipolar aren't what I'd call Yukare. More like immature and slightly petty. I saw the trailer for the U.S. version and I'm NOT buying it just based upon that reason alone. I'm sorry, but GOD Luci Christian was a terrible choice. They could at least TRY to find someone who sounds close to the original.
(not to mention the huge number of changes and editing out of a lot of the Japanese jokes and references. It's just not funny.
Take the episode where Tomo cuts her hair and Chiyo stops, runs back to Yomi and asks her a question, to which the response is "that's not possible." It's very funny(Chiyo is obviously asking if the broke up with a boyfriend), but if you edit it at all or Americanize it, it just turns out completely wrong. Or the episode in Okinawa - where she's trying to make the gifts her friend bought sound lewd. Or...
Sorry - it's just the cutest Anime ever and they made it so un-funny and bland.
One thing - would it KILL them to have a subtitled version of a show? I don't think anyone would really mind that much if the occasional show was in Japanese with subtitles. It would be a cinch to distribute compared to making a seperate slapped-together U.S. version. |

The problem is not subtitling the anime but most adults who liscence the animes outside of Japan (my country as well) still think of anime as cartoons from Japan and supposed to cater children. I know that's not the case but they want to get more audience to watch the animes even kids who don't know how to read yet.
So what do you do if you want younger audience who still don't know how to read? Dub the entire series of course. The more the audience the bigger piece of the pie the liscencee gets from advertisers.
What I don't agree is their mentality that they have to have the animes butchered so it will be Americanized... In my country they dub the anime and since we share some common traits and quirks with Japanese, they didn't have to localize the anime... they just showed the anime as is with the local dialect dubbed in... |

You know, there are Japanese puns that just don't make sense in English...

Why would they air a subbed anime on a mainstream channel when a dub is almost guaranteed to get more viewers? _________________

| though anime has become big in theses couple of years due to the help of some of the dubbed anime like Inuyasha and Gundam Seed, the biggest surprise for me is how big non dubbed anime have gotten so popular. one example is naruto, ever since this came out i'm finding people who never knew of anime getting into naruto. i can expect that anime is only gona get bigger and bigger. i hope this will lead to more all anime channel like the The Anime Network. |

Anime channels have always come up as really good ideas and if were up to this forum, thered be a subbed and dubbed one by now. But the proooblem is.... that about the strength of our fanbase, this forum. Okay im drastically understating but thats what companys see. The corperate world of television just doesnt seem tpo think the anime that trickles down is less than sufficent. I mean in all honesty i can go to on demand right now and watch anime at my liesure. Problem is, its selected shows, selected episodes. Its hard to complete a series and its dubbed which kills me. The only two things that can really throw off an anime badly are the writing and the voice acting and when there skewered.... Gao! but anyway whether or not thell ever make an anime chan thats respectable or subbed or whether the anime out there will ever be treated as an equal to or ever so beloved reality shows (ACK ) im perfectly happy working my way through shows as long as the torrents are good. _________________ "Let them hate, so long as they fear" |

We definately need more channels that show anime in Canada. YTV is ok and all but its more geared towards kids. Plus, YTV hosts are kinda annoying and the anime they do show is either getting old or aren't that great.
But I think that has something to do with broadcasting laws in Canada where they get in trouble if they don't broadcast a certain amount of Canadian content. |
