Takasan : How do I extract the outlines of a chraracter
np. There's differents way to extract a part of an image. That will depend of what you need to extract. Is it a for black and white picture? Is it a rough or an inked picture?
I'll suppose this is an inked image :
For me the most fastest way to extract a picture : you select by color range (select/color range) you just have to chose the color that you want to collect by cliking on the little preview or in the picture. After you have your selection, you just put it on a new layer directly above (ctrl+J).
And you have extracted the part of the image you wanted.
The draw had to be clean before. So if this is a rough, you can try to clean it wit the Level fonction of Photoshop ( a great one : Ctrl+L) or you have a more advanced Tools the Curves fonction, but it will be for later. The Level is a very good one. Just try the slider to understand this tool.
For extracting you'll often just have to move the left or right slider slightly and after that move the middle one to make the last settings.
I hope that will help you a little. If you want to work quickly, the best way is to learn the shortcuts first. You'll gain a LOT of time!

hmm...well I think youre gonna have some trouble finding PS withouth buying it. You can get a free trial of it from adobe's website, but that only lasts a week. Other than that your best bet would be to try and find it on a P2P network Like kazaa or limewire. of course it would take a while to DL, and then you would have the problem of getting a working serial code...I think PS uses those...I remember trying to DL it once to no avail.
Basically you just have to suck it up and take a hit to the pocketbook I think. Or you know what you could do? I dont know if you're in HS or College...but in some college art classes, and HS even, you get student copies of PS because there are assignments you have to use it for, you could try that.
Other than that I could offer a less expensive alternative. You can pick up Corel PsPX from target for like 74 dollars, which is less than PS CS2. and PsPX has almost all of the same feature, and unless you want to go professional it will be fine for anything you need. It's what I use most often ^_^
or you could use the link on the page before this, lol.

hmmm all i can say vector line arts is effective to make an crsipy neat outline for example an anime character.. because sometimes the scans are so blurry that the outlines are faded
You can also use the combination of vectoring and cg color to make a better images of anime character video screen cap...
extraction hmmm my technique here is to resize my image 1500px in height, zoom in to 200-500%, use the polygon tool turn the anti alias on and start cutting.... then resize it .. _________________ To Know me is to love me...
Here's a tip, increase the Contrast so that the image's colors will stand out, then use the Magic Wand.
But if you're extracting an image from a very "noisy" background, use the Plogyon Lasso tool from a zoomed in perspective.
The Magnetic Lasso is also good but I recommend the Magic Wand as it is much easier but quite a hassle if a part of your picture is the same color as your background. _________________ EX-mod
Yes I've been playing with the Magic Wand for a while now but my sketches are kind of light and have many wandering lines in them so it's kind of hard to get it right.
Still trying to figure out this extracting thing....all I got was that I draw the lines with that green thing and then erase the places that I don't want. Then the problem is the Inverting. What is inverting? I can't seem to do it.
btw: how do you get a screen cap? I forgot how to. Is it Ctrl+Window+P? _________________ The hardest person to forgive is yourself~
I use Alt+Impr screen, usually I use Acdsee too for screen capture, you also have a lot of program to do that, capture.professional....

Do you mean Invert selection? If this is the case, you have to do Select/inverse or Shift+Ctrl+i to do that, or with a selection Tool (lasso for example) you click with the property button of your mouse and select the Select Inverse.

For lighter bg and wandering lines just use polgon lasso and zoom in , cut those uneeded line then your done.....
your talking about the extraction filter of PS hmm try the help menu and type invert to know its function..... actually i dont use this filter those who are experienced usually use polygon lasso at 800% zoom for a neat extraction..... _________________ To Know me is to love me...
Invertion? Hmm... is it about the Selection Tool? If it is, I use it a lot!
Inverting a selection means, if you select an area, and then use Invertion (CTRL + SHIFT + I), you will select the area you have not selected.
Hmm... this is difficult to describe, so here's a screenshot:
Before Invertion:
[img:150:150:64664b1117]http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/3492/invertion17pl.jpg[/img:64664b1117]
After Invertion:

So in the first caption, the white BG was in selection. After inverting it, the gray shaded area will now be selected. There. Hope it makes things clear now~ _________________ EX-mod
