|
|
There are lots of animes that will have a few moments of Christmas cheer and New Years celebrations. So which are some of your favorites?
I liked the Christmas moment from Love Hina where Keitaro spent time with Mutsumi and Naru
and got to hold both their hands.
My favorite New Years was from Fruits Basket with Tohru, Kyo, and Yuki.
When the two guys ran back in a panick so Tohru wouldn't be in danger by staying home alone and also be sad without her mother.

Japan's idea of Christmas is very weird. Almost all meaning of Christmas as a religious holiday has been lost and replaced with idea of romance and parties instead of cozy family moments.
So most anime would show Christmas as some kind of romantic holiday.
Other than few exceptions that is.
R.O.D. tv's episode on Christmas was pretty moving. It was about how the paper sisters met. Maggie and Michel both gave same book to Anita as present.
oh, and more about bizarreness of Japanese Christmas, seems like they have strong connection between Christmas and KFC in Japan...

Favorite Christmas moment - Excel Saga episode when Excel and Hyatt were working out front of the department store dressed in christmas costumes, and Hyatt died on the table. I forget what the kid said, but it was friggin' hilarious...
... now I gotta go dig out my dvds and find that scene, otherwise that'll bug me all night. _________________

| I find the one in Initial D where Takumi, his dad and Mogi celebrated Chirstmas at the tofu shop. It was rather amusing seeing Bunta's (Takumi's dad) expressions. |

You completely ignored the first paragraph of my post... I'm embarrassed for both of us...

The reason there aren't many christians in Japan is because, christians have been heavily persecuted in Japan in the past.
Also, Japan already has 2 major religions with long history. Concept of Christianity is just too foreign to Japanese. So even though you'd see lot of Christianity symbolisms in anime, there aren't many real Christians in Japan. and I see that as a good thing (ugh I sound like Martha Stewart). Having much of your native religion intact even in westernized modern era is respectable. Stupid colonialism. _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img] |

How coincidence... I just posted a review about the most religious anime I ever saw, and then there's a thread concerning this just now.
You see, I think Satoshi Kon's Tokyo Godfathers is an anime movie which has the most true Christmas spirit. It's not just for background setting, but it was the main theme of the movie. Satoshi created characters with different tragic past, all of them need a salvation, but in the end bound together by a miracle in a Christmas Eve. Although I am not a Christian, this one is very touchy and actually warm my heart. |
