what is up with harem anime?

is it just me or is it that in all sorts of harem anime, why is it the loser gets all the hot girls?
i mean isn't that kinda unrealsitic?

So viewers can relate better to the main character. If main character was some smooth talking guy who gets all the girls, I'd just be pissed about the main character.
It's more interesting to see the underdogs succeed.
But, some male protagonists are really too pathetic...

Simply put its so losers with little to no people skills can get instant gratification seeing someone like them succeed with women.. Even though its unrealistic and sometimes annoying its good for entertainment. If it were some smooth talking guy that got all the ladies it would annoying and too much like real life to be entertaining to most lol..

i agree with one of the posters, IMO it's so that people like mw can relate lol. When i see a main character that is popular or supposedly the cool guy i get really turned off by the anime or manga.

I would disagree with the whole "cool guy" getting the girls thing as a turn off, for it is quite a general term. Like Takaya from Lilim Kiss was pretty popular, even thought he was contrasted with a "pretty boy" smooth-talking type as his best friend. Perhaps it is the whole "Squall"-like attitude that makes him likeable, but yeah, he had looks, brain, brawn and a cool image; still made a good main character.

As far as the stereotypical harem hero goes, it is alright if it is done well, but some mangas/animes go over the top and over-exaggerate their "average-ness" to the point where IT gets to be a turn off.

pathetic = the guy from that angle show, my angle or something like that. he had funny bad luck at the start but then after that he was just annoying.
