I would dare admit that it is actually a difficult question to answer. Like AlDim, I believe anime is only a medium of presentation. However like all medias, whatever has been presented on it can be presented on other forms of media as well (and has been).
Again like AlDim, what attracted me more towards Japanese animation is that their attitudes towards anime is more 'mature' than the other nations (though not by much). One kj1980 ( a Japanese poster on other forums ) has pointed out that while manga is accepted as a common reading, anime is still regarded as 'kids stuff' in Japan and frowned upon by the seniors. However their 'kids stuff' is for the young teens crowd ( 10 - 14 ) and not the ( 6 - 8 ) target group predominant in almost other country's ( East and West ) animation targets.
Thus the Japanese animation comes across as more 'mature' for those pieces that the animation crew decided to try something against their norm. The bulk of Japanese anime is more like childish entertainment animes, ( e.g. endless fighting with "haha good wins" and simple stories with plotholes galore but the children won't mind ) and laughing at everyday life animes, though the latter category could also be a mature reflection of their everyday life, rather than something dealing with philosophy or mature issues.
The other animations of the world tend to have no one dying in the show ( only robots die, no human organics is supposed to ) and constantly show a fairy tale sort of setting which I got sick of already.
Also another thing that always interested me was watching the artwork in motion. I can admit that watching animation is to satisfy my desire that I wish I can possibly match their artistic ability. Just like a wannabe artist with no talent going to the art gallery and constantly marvelling at a Renaissance painting hoping that he can get some inspiration and lessons from it.
So basically it's just the artwork and the stories being pandled around. Oh yes, the comedy too. Sometimes I just like immature humour pushed around at times with giant hammers wielded by cute girls smacking down on baka males who cannot comprehend the female heart
Ah, anime. I've fallen in love with it because you just can't quite beat it with anything else (Aside from family guy/the simpsons when you just want plain outright brainless laughter) in the cartoon category.
I've always held some sort of dislike for american cartoons; mindless violence (tom and jerry/all those sylvester (sp) and tweety and stuff) where everyone's just out to kill eachother but nobody ever really dies. There's so much violence but so little consequence; young kids would get the wrong idea and think they were invincible.
They also have horrible plots for the most part, or none at all. they're just there cause the youths of today have terrible standards, like ed edd and eddy, or all that filth you see on tv these days.
Then anime came into my life. It was like leaving a polluted city and coming in contact with the clean fresh country air. The animation was amazing, characters so detailed and fresh (no four fingers or no fingers at all, no crappy backgrounds or terrible scenes of random color unless it was for a special reason.. and it actually looked like a world instead of an empty space) and the maturity! It was like finally finding water in a desert, or an oxygen tank at the bottom of the ocean.
Pure treasure.
Intricate storylines, characters with such in depth backgrounds and unique personalities that make you think they really do exist. all of this enchanted me, and I was hooked immediately. I had found my home for cartoons, and I'd never look back at what I'd been forced to watch in the past.

For me, it's that the Anime and artwork I really top-notch releases is close to being realistic, like well - what they put out in Hollywood. Babylon 5 was all CG - from the consoles to the walls - the actual set was hardly more than cardboard walls. Good anime is the same - it's hard at times to tell you're watching something artificially created(as opposed to film)
But - that's only half of it... the rest is - you can do *anything* with it.
Go check out the small 5-10% of the market that is not kiddie-anime(In Japan at least - it's more like 1% over here) Very compelling stuff.

ANIME RULEZZZZZ ! ! ! ! ! ! _________________ I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.
Personally what i like in anime is the fact that you can do so much more in them. Special effects in movies have come very far but its still usually quite bland and very hollywood. Anime you can have much better battles as you are not restricted to actors, battles are also usually a lot smoother as well.
Movies are also only usually a couple of hours long and so you can't get as deep a plot as you can in anime. Of course the animation also looks cool as everyone has mentioned.
I like both anime and cartoons (such as samurai jack and spongebob squarepants and some marvel cartoons).
By the by: When's the next samurai 7 episode coming out?
to me..its wonderful how they can make such wonderful art of ppl especially teh gurls but still...it amazes me sometimes how they think up of characters so well..maybe they use a human model ??

Anime is something different.
Not quite like a cartoon for children
Not quite like dramatic art for the "cultured"
It seems to blend right in between for the 12-30.
Sorta like a fantasy kinda thing.
I enjoy anime because of it's story line and the interaction between characters. Yeah sure Anonyomous Strange One may get his head blown off but hey that's an interaction. The flow of the story also must be good.
Let me compare two animes.
Love Love & Love Hina ( possible spoiler, but you've probably seen these )
they both are about a harem of girls and with a loserish kinda guy
However, Love Hina provides you with somewhat a story line and some kind of what's going on in their head kinda thing. Such as when Keitaro puts his face between Naru's breasts he gets punched through a door and a basket of Kitsume's underwear.
In Love Love, the girls seem to be airheaded and all you see is panties. Yes panties, I for one am NOT attracted to panties. Why would someone be attracted to white underwear. It's like girls liking to smell your boxers. Who sick would that be. I'd think someone I've sweated in for nearly 16 hours is unsuitable for smelling. The first part goes like this girls are lined up JUST like a Dating SIM and they all do their introductions and such and with skimpy outfits and cosplaying outfits just twinging to satisfy the perverted underworld.
In two different animes with similar genres and similar synopsis how could I enjoy one and hate another. Plot, Storyline, and Development of Characters. Bam great example.
Though there is some things I wish, is that other countries around the world produces quality entertainment. America is lacking in this industry, wow you got hollywood and good actors but you can't even make a movie that could pique anybody's interests.
-Thanks for reading, yeah I'm oddly serious this time.
I think that most anime is mainstream crap but the few exceptional shows/movies that come out every year make it more than worth-while to be a fan. It's great that the Japanese are willing to explore animation as a medium equivalent to live action rather than as a genre. That's probably its main appeal.

1. Anime is pretty. I love the style. To be characteristically female, I think bishounen are fun and since they're not found in anything American, I enjoy that bit of the media; however, I do just generally like the way anime looks in comparison to American cartoons.
2. Anime is nothing like real life or it is everything like real plus an element that is completely insane, which makes it a great escape.
3. The themes are often things that I find motivating/encouraging. Watching an episode of Fruits Basket or Ai Yori Aoshi or any of my other shoujo is just heartwarming when everything else in life seems to be less wonderful than normal. Seeing the determination of the idiotic Naruto is a good reminder to work hard and stick with things I believe in.
4. There's a community that goes with it. Sure, I'm not on site a lot, or if I am I'm just lurking in the background and reading things but not contributing a heck of a lot but in a world where I often come off as strange it's nice to know there are people who can understand things I do. The community extends to the offline world too--what else could be like watching an episode of something as nutty as Azumanga Daioh and laughing one's head off with a group of friends who all understand the jokes?
5. I'm in love with language and I happen to love the sound of Japanese. If you've ever watched episodes raw, you might get a sense of what I'm talking about (and yes, I've watched raw anime and reasonably understood it before--I tend to pick up language REALLY quickly and easily, it's a gift I've been given). _________________ One of the old fogies of A-S.
