Translate it words for words, it actaully means Beast, instead of Animal. It's usually used in a negative way, like saying someone awful like a beast.

I have one big kanji dictionary with several thousand kanjis arranged after their radical. It's really nice and easy.

Otherwise, www.nihongoresources.com has a nice kanji dictionary, where you can look up after pronunciation (chinese or japanese), meaning or radical and strokes count.

hey, CGY and me have the sme meaning for it...beast. but it was translated by my Chinese teacher....but animal and beast are pretty close anyway. how about the japanese words in inu yasha? if you translate it, what does it mean? my teach saw the manga and translated it. she said it meant night dog or something, but i'm sure there was dog in it. cuz i know "inu" means dog. no idea what "yasha" is.

logs>i just learn a few words when i watch anime. basically, that's how i've learned their basic greetings.

Thank God I'm Cantonese... I already know a bunch of kanji Very Happy
on the other hand though, I find it damn annoying how they have like 3 or 4 different ways to pronounce the same kanji...

It's true there is night in the name, the ya means night. But you're forgetting the sha. Together the ya and sha means a female demon. Remember it's the chinese pronunciation, when 2 kanji are 'pulled together'..

so Inuyasha: some female demon dog - Sounds scary, maybe I should read/watch it ... Nah ^^

Oh, and the kanji for those of you who can see them ^^: 犬夜叉

That's what I wrote, right? Just seemed like someone had some trouble understanding the name.. Or maybe I misunderstood everything? I sometimes do (._.)
