the newest one that ive seen is jackie chans The Myth.
ok. jackie chan is an archaeologists who lately has been having dreams about a concubine and general.
the movie is set in the present day, and the other half is set in the Qin dynasty era.
jack (jackie) and his friend william (both researchers) set out to uncover the secrets to the dreams and as well the great secrets to the burial place of the great emperor of that dynasty.
the past shows us about general meng yi, whose duty was to protect and excort concubine Li Ok Soo. which he does galliantly.
hmmm...theres not i can say without giving away too much.
the attention to detail in this film are very high.
of course, the fight scenes are as always, well done.
there is no reason i like this film as much as i do, but i just like it.




infernal affairs
stars: andy lau, tony liung chiu-wai
this is a classic movie.
the infernal affairs department has inserted a spy into the mafias gang, who after 10 years has assumed a very high position within the group.
the same can be said about the gang. they inserted a spy into the police force to watch they're actions.
this movie is very tense, especially when both spys become aware of a spy's presence. the tension heats up as both sides try to discover and elimate the spy. unaware to both sides, the spy is someone they trust the most.
however, on teh brink of being discovered, the spy within the IA department destroys all evidence of his past. that includes the officer within the gang. this is a very good movie, lots of suspense and action.

house of flying daggers
takeshi kaneshiro, andy lau, ziyi zhang and dandan song.
again, another good movie.
there is a group of assassins called the house of flying daggers who were thought to be elimated.
but rumours reach the nearby sheriffs office that the daughter of the leader of the HOFD is alive and working in a well known brothel.
the head sheriff (andy) and his lower rank officer (takeshi) capture her and threaten to kill her unless she disclose the whereabouts of teh hideout.
while in jail, she is broken out by takeshi. who originally wants to discover the hideout, but grows feelings for her. Jin (takeshi) is in way over his head when the clan discovers his true identity, and is put to death. by the girl he saved. there is more, but i dont want to ruin it.
this movie is very good, the action sequences are fight scenes are very well rehearsed. expect alot from the director of crouching tiger hidden dragon.

hero
jet li, tony leung chiu wai, maggie cheung, ziyi zhang.
another very good movie. remained at the top of the movies for 4 weeks in teh US.
this movie was quite confusing at first, but after it made sense.
at the time, china was un-unified and war torn. the Qin warlord wanted to conquer china and all its land and rule it. however, three assassins wanted to put him away. after a very close encounter with one of teh assassins, the warlord proclaimed that he who defeats the assassin will recieve gold and be allowed 100 paces of the warlord.
enter county sherrif named nameless (jet li). he claimed to have defeated one threat to the warlord.
after many different flashback sequences showing how he dealt with all threats, he is finally within 10 paces of the would be king.
but the king has figured out his intentions. what they are? u just have to watch and find out.
once again, from the director of couchin tiger comes another masterpiece of cinematography. the fight scenes are true to chinese tradition.
this is a must see movie.

heavens soldiers.
this was a fairly good movie.
present day korea has developed a nuke. and the world wants to confiscate it. so, major kang of north steals it to give korea strength.
however, the rest of korea dont agree, and troops from both north and south attempt to stop him.
at the same time, a comet is passing over earth and the troops as well as teh nuke are sent back in time; to when ancient korea was being invaded.
there they meet would be general Li, the man who fought off invasion.
so all the soldiers, aware of teh current situation decide to help him shape up in teh fine general. but, at the same time as teh final battle is to take place, the comet comes once again and the window of their return is the same time as the battle.
this movie is a good watch. it shows two koreas working as one. as well as brotherhood on teh front lines.
one thing i thot was funny about this movie was when the soldiers used ak47s against warriors with axes and shields. that was hilarious when they thought they stood a chance against bullets.

there is many, many more movies out there, but ive only listed the best ones i can remember.

Seven Samurai is a classic among all movies, asian or western.
A village hires seven samurai to protect them from a gang.It is a absolutely bueatiful movie-directed by Akira Kurosawa, whom I consider one of the best directors of all time. I highly recommend it to everyone, especially those interested in Japanese history.

If it is martial arts you seek, then check out some of the recent releases coming from Thailand. Ong-Bak and Tom Yum Goong are two great films starring Tony Ja. He takes things to the next level combining some kick ass stunts with the independent film feel to these movies.

Another good Thai movie is Bangkok Dangerous. It is a story about a deaf man that becomes a hitman. Its a decent story along with lots of little tidbits of life in Bangkok. The real kicker is it has Premsinee Ratanasopha in it. If you are a fan of cute asian women she'd probably make it on one of your top ten lists.

For some real good directing check out the Wong Kar Wai films from Hong Kong. Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love and 2046 are all great movies. Ziyi Zheng was SUPER hot in 2046.

I'm also a fan of "Beat" Takeshi Kitano movies from Japan. He plays a few yakuza/cop roles and has directed a few gems. Kikujiro is a great movie about a tough guy helping a little kid find his mom. Its quite slow and the humor is dry, so its a bit of an aquired taste, but still its a great movie. And if you like the music to the Studio Ghibli movies by Joe Hisaishi then you'll like the opening tune to Kikujiro, its actually my favorite of his.
