Another month, another chapter in the ongoing story...

Chapter 47 : Young Women of the Battlefield

We start off with a huge explosion from a building. A grim Ling jumps out from the explosion, carrying Lan Fan on his shoulder. He's hurt bad but he charges off. Wrath calls Ling a flashy kid for using so many kinds of grenades, but he also stated that when he was young, he wouldn't be bothered by those flashy stuff. However, now that he's old, his body doesn't respond as fast as he wants to ( I get a feeling this is an excuse... ). Wrath also groans about having also to put an end to the matters concerning Scar.

Over at the Elrics-Rockbell-Scar scene, Ed and Al are telling Winry to drop the gun. Scar however states that Winry has the right to shoot at him, but once she starts shooting at him, he will immediatedly take her out as an enemy. When challenged by the Elrics on this, he screams out that "Killing? Won't that be a fine result!!" "The cycle of hatred will cease for either side that kills the other!!" "Don't forget!!" "The Rebellion was caused by a gun-toting Amestrian!!" "It was caused by you bunch of people!!" Winry's gun lowers at this point.

Scar says that if Winry isn't going to shoot, she should just leave battlefield and stop being a hinderance. He and Ed then continue to fight. However Winry suddenly starts raising the gun again, Ed notices and we see Scar's hand stopping in front of Ed's face... who has thrown himself in front of Winry ( Scar was attacking Winry in response to her action then, Ed saved her ). Ed's act and countenance made Scar have a flashback about a same situation with his brother. His brother was protecting him from Kimblee. Al chases off Scar with blows and Alchemy, scolding Ed on almost getting the two ( Ed and Winry) killed, and telling him to bring Winry to somewhere safe. Al then pursues Scar.

Winry is distressed that she couldn't bring herself to shoot for revenge, as well as to prevent Ed and Al from getting killed. Ed comforts her, saying that her hands are not killing hands, but hands that bring people to life. After depositing her with the just-arrived military police, Ed goes off to pursue Al and Scar, leaving Winry to wonder why she can only do nothing but be the one waiting for them. Note the military police saying that they should have addressed State Alchemists with honourific speech ( high mark of respect there ).

Roy picks up the radio chatter of what happened and tells Riza to go and backup the Elrics. Riza's going off in disguise and 'borrows' Fury's specs ( she took out the lenses ). Just before she steps out, she warns Roy against going down to the scene to help out

Gluttony is pursuing Ling and Lan Fan by smell in the alleys. The chase ended up in a cul-de-sac of an unpopulated slum. Wrath says he'll handle this and Gluttony can go off after Scar. Gluttony however asks for Lan Fan because he likes girls. Why? The flesh of girls are just so tender and delicious, that's why...

Lan Fan states that her left arm has been rendered useless, and that there is no reason or possible gain for Ling to remain and get defeated, caring for her like that. A King might exist for the people, but the loss of a King will demoralise the people. Their tribe has all their hopes pinned on Ling. Ling says that if she thinks he'll abandon her, she can forget it as he won't do anything that will be 'dishonourable' (okay, I figure there is no term in English that is exactly what "Taigi/大義" means, the Chinese should know what it means just from the kanji. Put into English terms, it means honouring your bonds and relationships with individuals, groups and society.) Lan Fan on hearing this then draws out her Kunai and stabs towards herself, despite Ling's command to stop.

Al and Scar have fought their battle all the way to a train yard. Scar tells him to stop being a hinderance or does he have a death-wish. Of course Al says that he has no wish to be destroyed. Scar questions why Al still has faith in Alchemy even though that was the thing that placed him in that unfortunate body. Al says that even though he was unwillingly placed into that body, you cannot equate an unfortunate event with an event forced upon you. That's why he don't feel sad over this body. To deny Alchemy is to deny what his brother had saved his life with. "I believe in the possibilities of Alchemy..." "Of course, I want to believe in it!" With that, Scar causes a distraction and was about to destroy Al but Ed saves the day. At this point, Gluttony literally drops in and proves to be a match for Scar.

Sudden scene : Wrath follows a bloody trail and finds Lan Fan's bloody arm...

Back again, suddenly the manhole cover pops up and Ling flies out. His eyes and face was very fierce indeed; he stuffed a grenade into Gluttony's mouth. It exploded, taking out, leaving a headless and one-armed body staggering around. Ling tells Ed to alchemise some strong wires for him and he uses that to tie up the regenerating Gluttony. By tying the remnants of Gluttony up, the regeneration into a full body makes the bonds even tighter, so Gluttony can't get out ( poor Gluttony has a sweatdrop ), and so they have captured a Homunculus!!

Wrath standing over the arm of Lan Fan remarks "...Well done!!". It turns out that Lan Fan's left arm was tied to the back of a stray dog! Lan Fan has escaped into the sewers, where the flowing waters will wash away her trail and scent of blood. "So how does it feel... to have been outwitted, you monster..........!!"

Personal opinions
Now that a Homunculus has been captured and Ling is back with the gang safe and sound, the Fuhrer's identity will definitely be exposed. Bradley definitely will be aware of this. The question will be on how this will be handled. Will Ed and gang be branded criminals in league with Scar? ( Scar is still an unknown factor. What will he do after seeing them capturing Gluttony? ) Or will the Fuhrer play dumb and pretend nothing happened ( Seeing how he seems to be acting in his own ways rather than what is obvious previously )?

It also seems the Edwin pairing has got some spotlight here.

Arakawa-sensei's excellent story style shows up again for the Ling-Lan Fan scenes. First Lan Fan was made to seem to commit suicide, we expected Ling to have stopped her, but then we see Wrath standing over the bloody arm without Ling. With Ling then exploding as if in rage over Gluttony, you would have thought that he was doing it in vengeance for Lan Fan ( to make her suicide to have some sense ). It is until the end that all is revealed. Also it is good that Arakawa-sensei avoids following too many times the mode of leaving cliff-hangers all the time. Here the tale of Ling-Lan Fan is exposed at the end, so that people will appreciate a cliff-hanger the next time.

What is definite is that the story is definitely moving into another cycle, one where they have become aware of a much greater threat.

Oh yeah, Ling rocks!!!

Arakawa is one of those rare mangakas with the kick-butt art and plot style with fries... maybe it's because Arakawa use screentones so differently than other people I have seen..

Chapter 48 and what a whopper it is ( 48 pages, 48 for 48! ). Besides confirming something which fans are practically begging for, it sets up a new atmosphere for the gang and a deadly encounter.

EDWIN FOREVER!!! Woot! They are only teens and the way their relationship are confirmed is a nice romantic touch

Bradley knows of them now. They know of Bradley's secret. Things are never going to be the same again.

However I really do think Bradley has a secret agenda of his own.

FMA is by far one of the most complicated manga/anime series I have ever read. I agree with most other people on this topic by saying the manga and anime are very different at times.
