People fail to notice that the younger people on the forums (the ones who lie about their age) are total morons and shouldnt be allowed on the internet. In addition, it makes anyone who takes the time to learn a name or two look smarter in comparison to: "zomglol the saskay from narootoe totally pwned that dood the other day"

God knows that life would be better if the current generation of kids were all killed.

It'd be really nice if the same thing applied to leet (the whole comp blowing up thing), as I agree with what Bowser said about leet being totally and utterly useless. I get headaches from reading leet, which came from this guy who uses leet in anime-forums.com almost non-stop. I also agree about the thing with little kids. They're mostly complete morons, and their grammar sucks too sometimes.

I sometimes give concessions to the people who don't speak english well and can't spell properly, but only if each one of their posts shows signs of an improving skill in english. At least it shows that they're not as ignorant as the other retards online.

Hahaha, if they are little kids, isn't it appropriate that they suck at grammar and spellings? But, yeah they do get on my nerve.

Not all people can learn English at same pace. For languages that use completely different system from English such as Chinese, Japanese, etc., it's gonna be difficult to learn it. If some German person wanted to learn English, it'd be very easy since both languages share many similarities. For example: they both share Alphabets, meaning that writing system is already taken care of. They may suffer some spelling mistakes, but it's understandable.

It's hard to show improvements just on some forum postings. Learning a new language isn't that easy. But, what I find irritating is when some person decides to post everything in their language on an English forum. I mean WTH!? why are they in an English forum if they can't write it in English?

But, since practically every country teaches their kids English as second language, anyone with some higher education should be able to at least communicate with English.

English is my second language too. Though it's my primary language now.
I feel more comfortable with English than using my mother tongue.
Though I'm only fluent in only 2 languages, I'm trying to learn 2 other languages at the moment.

haha, I bet it took more effort (and perhaps thought) to type that out than otherwise.

True, however, this topic was only concerning spelling errors, and I was commenting on how I wasn't the only spelling Nazi, not quite discluding my label of being the grammar Nazi, lol.

Right with ya! My Vietnamese speech is terrible! And cool, I've never seen the term "mother tongue", I've heard "native tongue".

L337 speak surely takes more effort than typing normally, I see no point in it, and it's hardly readable. Same thing with the use of aLtErNaTiNg CaPs, I still see it nowadays, and with older teens. It's very, very sad to see. The only reason I use slang is if I'm typing with one hand, for the sake of making the message short. If I want to sound like an idiot. To make my text sound less formal. Or if I want to put more emphasis on a story n' such (or putting more fun in my story telling).

I actually say zomg in real life, as in zoh-my-god. But it's only to myself, and in my mind.

Hehe, I wouldn't actually use terms like "mother tongue" in my real life speech. I think people tend to write very differently than how they talk in real life. Also, whenever I write stuff, I search and check words that are not too familiar to me. Of course I searched the term "mother tongue" before I used it.

Being picky about spellings and grammars when you write is only going to improve yourself. People should try to use correct English when they write. You don't have to have phD in arts to be able to write intellectually.

Though, myself being a science student is at a disadvantage when trying to write things in more decorative way. We are taught to write as simple and straight forwardly as possible.

funnily enough ive never used net language when chatting on MSN but i use lol, lmao, gtg... on ASource. i use informal language and syntax but i try to keep it under control. i have an annoying habit of constantly editing posts if i find a typo or an error. punctuation doesnt really bother me.
i really dont mind if other people arent as strict as i am, its up to them. as long as whatever theyre trying to communicate gets across im a happy camper :]

I dispise people who cannot at least attempt some sort of proper communication. Oh, I do not mind the random "ZOMG" and "loal" because that is part of the culture. But when some fourteen year old asshole starts typing 'u mst undetstanb taht its jokes yo'. What the fuck is Jokes?

However, their shitty typing must be pardoned for the simple fact that people from other countries are learning English. No, they're no learning English from books or TV, but the bloody Internet! So the pure shittiness keeps getting recycled! You can't even yell at someone, "Hey shithead, learn to spell" because they'll naturally be someone who has learned English off of the Internet and then you feel like a complete ass.

Grammer isn't so bad. I have not formally learned grammer, ever. I just read a hell of a lot, so I got the gist of it. Besides, there isn't a grammer checker, which is most likely incorrect when you're talking about subjects such as Anime and Manga.

No, the greatest crime of all is the lack of quality threads. No matter where I go, it's always the same. "Who wuld you marre?", "Out of everyone in Ichigo 100%, who would you make love to?", and the like. It's really tiring and makes me sad to be on the Internet. I would not miss people if they had to get a lisence to use the Internet, which basically tested their ability to not be a tool.

the ASource forum demographic is fairly broad. you cant expect everybody to think like you. youre a mod eh? so maybe you can...people will grow up and learn to respect the language
threats to the language dont always come from youth:
"ACHIEVE a user centric portal framework"
"ENHANCE availability and accessibility of services for the end user"
"INITIATE innovative strategies for portal measurement and review"
--2nd Annual National Conference on Government Portals

and my favourite:
"As we know, there are no known knowns. There are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns. That is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, the ones we dont know we dont know"

For someone who's getting so... emotional... about proper spelling, you have not talent at it what so ever.

Dispise is spelt D. E. S. P. I. S. E.
Lisense is spelt L. I. C. E. N. S. E.

I guess reading your threads won't improve my spelling much...

And to think that about 60 years ago ppl would be horrified with the way we talk normaly now. The internet is just a medium for language evolution, just like slang, which is widely accepted in many languages as normal.

Wow, i'm kinda surprised at how emotional some people are getting over the matter of spelling. The English dictionary was invented only a couple of centuries ago, and before that the scholars of the period just took pot shots at spelling. It's not like spelling matters nearly as much as the idea that it's trying to convey to the reader. After all the whole idea behind language is to place your thoughts into written, verbal, or visual form that can be interperited by the reciever of this information. So, if a letter is off in a word and you can still make out what the idea behind the sentence is then the sentence has met the criteria for communication and IT'S ALL GOOD Very Happy

Being on the defense here, Tevesh's comment did not have any evident "emotion" involving spelling error. Just like Blackthorn, he's concerned with the improper message everyone is portraying by using slang. Then there's the point in the "lack of quality in most forum threads". The main message is hardly about spelling. Besides, I know Tevesh types pretty fast, those that type fast are bound to make typos. Razz

Main message from me: No bashing!

I don't mind if people use "gtg" or "brb". But, with one brief read, I had trouble digesting what you were trying to say. I had to either read it slowly, or repeatedly. You do get your message across, but not to everyone. Plus, it makes you sound like a crumb bum, haha. Given, I sound like Crumb bum all the time with the jargon I use. But, those that use many, many short forms, show that they didn't put time and/or effort into their message. Resulting in the poor discussions in most of a-s threads.

Oh damn.

I spelt two things wrong with a 100+ WPM and most of my replies are quality based. You better never make a spelling mistake, forever and ever. If you do, you are no longer the perfect person. I don't mind slang, I don't mind spelling errors; it's quality that I care about.

Poor quality is correlated with slang and spelling errors.

Some of the best replies I've seen on the Internet had incorrect spelling and slang to intentionally improve the message. They were hilarious and informative. Most people can't pull that one off, however.

So, why am I so emotional about quality? Because I have to pick through garbage when I read reviews. Two sentences poorly strung together, or a huge block of text. I will admit that quality for submissions has picked up ever since we have made 'how to write a review', but that's because people do not have the ability to apply themselves so they just give up.

Also, when it matters my spelling is perfect and my grammer is alright.

Yeah....I tried writing a Gantz review as a newbie for some quick points. I basically just gave an account of what I THOUGHT gantz was about. didn't go much into details. Nothing about the characters, visuals and sound. Needless to say, it was rejected. I gave up after that. I'm a lazy bugger.

Perfection is impossible. The english language has so many different variations it's impossible to say which one is standard.
