As mainstream showbiz continues its cat-and-mouse quest to protect its intellectual property, one tiny niche has figured out a way around the problem: Anime, the Japanese style of animation that typically features saucer-eyed women and giant mechanical men, and manga, its print cousin.
Tiny niche... yep, even though anime has grown so much in popularity in last few years, it still remains a subculture at best.
I didn't know much about ADVision's history, this article made me like ADVision a little more than before.
So the anime industry DOES count on the fansubbers for their business. haha _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img]
I think fansubbing is a great way for the companies to judge how well the show will do once licensed. The only downside is that it often takes so long for the companies to release episodes once it has been subbed.

I agree with you that the downside is that they do take a while, but being able to listen to the anime in English makes up for that. In a way. If the Dub takes that time to be able to create english voices that work for the anime and bring it to life like the original japanese voices do, then it'll make it worth its price. But the thing is, many Dubs still dont have quality english voices to do the quality dubs we all want.
In the meantime, fansubbers do create a huge fanbase for their favorite anime so when it comes out in the other countries, people have the knowledge of the anime and will want to buy it, if not for the anime itself perhaps for the comparison of the fansub and the Dub. Using this to their advantage the companies liscensing probably would keep a watch on the web for popular anime and bringthem here, also they might liscense the anime at a point where the fanbase is at a high and the series hasnt been fully subbed, so they get profits on the missing episodes. (source for idea around the site somewhere.)
