Alright, so I'm having a problem with the Direct 3D of Direct X 9.0.
A few games I tried downloading all can't start up, and give me an error message saying, "D3D not functioning" or something to that extent.
I did the Dxdiag to see what was wrong with it, and there's the message I see, "Direct 3D not functioning".
Can someone tell me how I can make it function? ;P _________________ [IMG:432:143:0a18b764ae]http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c315/Reiswinds/betternastysigD.gif[/img:0a18b764ae] |

It would be nice if we know what video card you're using. With that error, lemme guess, an ati card?
It would also be nice if you could recall what happend before this thing happened (assuming that you've played games or watch videos that uses directx before). |

Actually, I really don't know what kind of card I have.
Before this problem, my computer was being rebuilt... new motherboard and stuff. I just got it back recently, and I don't know anything about my computer anymore. It's kind've a custom computer now, but I don't know what's inside since I didn't do the job myself. _________________ [IMG:432:143:0a18b764ae]http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c315/Reiswinds/betternastysigD.gif[/img:0a18b764ae] |

That sucks. Your computer is probably relying on a built-in video card or just a really really old generic video card.
Since you're Windows XP, your system should have picked up the video card and use the right driver for it. The drivers might have been switched to a generic one (in your case vga.dll) so one final check for you to do: right click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager. Then a new window will pop-up that's titled Device Manager. Under Display adapters, see if there's any yellow icon. The yellow symbol indciates that a hardware is installed on the computer but it's not using the right drivers or none at all. If there is no yellow icon... Well, you need to get a new video card that does support DirectX features.

Looks like your graphic's card driver is not installed. Try to look around for your drivers CD and install the driver. _________________

Like I said before, this computer is totally different from the Dell I use to have... therefore it's not a Dell anymore.
The installation disks I have are for Dell coputers only. So when I tried to use it, it didn't recognize the system. -___-;
This probably means I'm totally screwed.
This is what I see when I open the device manager:

Hmm... Sometimes you can tell how the card looks like whether if it's an ati or an nvidia or a really old video card like TNT2. Well, scratch the last one out since Windows XP should have recognized TNT2. So that means that your video card could either be ancient or too new for Windows XP to recognize. And you also don't need to open up the case and take pictures of video card for us (lol that's what I had in mind a couple of seconds ago). I could only think of two things right now:
1) Download Knoppix, burn it as image, restart computer and boot from the CD/DVD-ROM (with the Knoppix media inside). Knoppix will run and you will see some informations about your system like your motherboard model, cpu model and speed, memory size, and alas your video card model. Once you got the model down, you could search around the net for the drivers for it. And with your free time, you could also play around with Knoppix and get a small feel of Linux :p
2) Guess & Check. You do a lot of this dealing with computers lol. Anyway, you don't really need to download all the video drivers out there and randomly install each one of them and see which one works. Download the latest drivers from Nvidia and ATi and install each one of them (remember to uninstall one before the other) since these drivers have a wide range of vid card supports from their products (not sure of ATi, I've always been dealing with nVIDIA). |
