ahhhh.... i'm currently on a need of help, for playing a file.
i dwloaded 'Evangelion Re-Death' movie (it's a fandub parody ) and it won't play.
i have already tryed everything, DIV-X, Mplayer, loads of codec packs, single-codecs and players and it just doesn't play. (BSplayer played it, but sound only. )
the format is 'mpg'(MPEG) but it seems that is a rare (or maybe older) version of mpg. maybe native mpg.
someone knows something about it? codecs? a good player? any suggestion is welcome! _________________

Are you certain it is mpg? Sometimes file extensions are changed by certain individuals on peer networks (names as well).
Try G-Spot to find out what kind of codecs it is using if it is an avi file. It can also tell basic streams of mpg. |

Also if downloading codecs is not your thing, get videolan, a free player that needs no codecs! It'll play just about any type of media (except .movs and .rm I think) and is a lot less buggy than Window's MEdia player.

| I also don't like VLC that much, I like media player classic, except I uncheck the built in mkv filter or splitter, and use the mkv/ogm pack from zhentarim's website. http://www.zhentarim.net/zx/downloads.php it's called the zx codec bundle, and it comes with zoomplayer or something, just don't select it when choosing things to install, unless you want to. It's a little more complicated than other media players, but it has lots of features. |

I have been watching Final Approach, Kannazuki no Miko, and School Rumble. All are .avi files but are not able to play on my Windows Media Player or BSPlayer. The only thing it can play on is VLC (unfortunately).
The problem isn't really watching the anime, it's opening it with Virtual Dub and/or even VirtualDubMod to make screen captures.
I've been having trouble looking for a "VFW" compatible codec because the error message states: "Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID' (unknown)
Virtual Dub requires a video for windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."
Does anyone know what the problem is? |

Which version of VirtualDubMod are you using?
AFAIK, the latest version ( 1.5.10.1 build2366 ) is able to take on all types of codecs and containers. |

| You can try to download the K-Lite Codec Pack. It works wonders for me: MKV, XVID, OGM, MPEG4. If you wanna play OGM and MKV, use the media player classic provided in the pack. If you wanna play normal MPEG4, DIVX and XVID, use any player like BSPlayer or Windows Media Player 9/10. |

| I'm using Mac OS X and most of the fansubs work on VLC or Quicktime. Been trying to play new .wmv and certain .avi. but it seems I need the WMV3 codec. I got Windows Media Player 9 and it worked fine for about 2 days. And now it won't play anything. What should I do??? |
