This is what the thread was about previously:
Quote:
I am home, which means shitty internet. I am going to school in two days, which means I must work on A-S stuff ( Wink)while my BitTorrents are working on catching me up to various anime that I missed within the last two weeks.

What movies do you recommend that would be up on a torrent site? Links would be awesome but title is OK.

I am thinking of getting Lord of War, Extended Wedding Crashers, and ...? That final part is your job, I guess.

I don't like romances, as they're generally poorly done. I'd rather not waste my time with bad action movies. Otherwise... No holds barred.

It is now about this:

Movies, movies in general. There should be a movie discussion thread and this is it. I realized that my list of movies I posted looked daunting but it isn't really. People have seen a lot of movies but don't remember them, I write them down so I do. Everyone's seen roughly the same amount unless they're in the business of reviews...

What's your favourite movie? What do you recommend? Etc, etc.

By the way, kids. This post is a perfect example using the Edit button. It's amazing.

What about bad HK action movies? I love them.

I've watched a fair share of them. I do have 8 movies waiting for me at home, but I'm not in the mood for that. Two of them are Stephen Chow, and one DVD is like 3 "lost" Jackie Chan movies.

The only asian movie that I am eternally searching for is Hanzihashi (Dead or Alive), and anything else done my Takeshi Miike. He makes good movies with super low productions. I don't know how he does it, but he works his magic. Ichi the Killer felt disturbing and surreal, Gozu made me feel like I slowly going insane, and Audition actually made me feel true horror in a long time.

He somehow makes terror become real... So I have been obsessed with watching all his movies. But there is a lack of torrents. Sad

Well if you don't mind Japanese Cult movies, I recommend "Tetsuo".

It's one of those movies you would either hate or love. You'll have strong emotions about it, either which way. Bascially its about an "Iron man". It was produced by Shinya Tskuamoto and is a good representation of early 80's sci-fi anime like Akira. I was really amazed by the level of cinematography used. It's really impossible to explain it with words. You just have to see it. Just make sure you don't eat anything before you watch it.

By the way, if you were frightened by Audition, you haven't really experienced Japanese Cult Horror movies from the 80s. They get much more graphic, beyond anything I've ever encountered with. Some stuff I've seen makes Saw seem like Scary Movie 3.

Well the biggest examples would be a couple of Shorts called the Guinea Pig (there is about 6 of them I believe), however those movies fall closer to the realm of fake snuff films though. I watched it once at a friends house, when I was in highschool, I had a friend was really into Japanese horror movies and we always tried to find stuff that would freak the other guy out. So we always looked for the worst stuff we could find. Basically my friend showed me one of those shorts and I took a hiatus from watching J-horror movies. It is definitely not something I want to keep in my memory, blarg.

I'm not all denoucing Audition or Gozu, I'm just saying that there are much more disturbing movies that have come out of Japan. Audition is great, but it's pretty mainstream.

By the way I stick with my recommendation of Tetsuo. I also recommend some more recent ones like Cure, Bullet Ballet, Eko Eko Azarak, Ebola Syndrome, and Uzumaki. I'm not saying these movies are great, but they'll definitely feed the j-horror hunger that you might have. Just don't eat before you see them.

By the way, I'm not crazy or some weird horror nut, I just watch a lot of everything. At the moment I've given up on J-horror movies I'm pretty much too scared to watch any more of them.

I'd definately reccomend Zatoichi, which is action/comedy. It is a masterpiece.

Also the movie Tampopo from 1985 is worth a shot. You could call it a japanese noodle western. It focuses on multiple people; always switching to new people to follow, like some guy in a train driving past in the background.. The film is about a girl, who wants to make the best noodles in japan, and of course 2 cowboy kinda guys come to her aid and starts teaching her in some sort of master-apprentice way.

What about cop movies from Japan? Like Violent Cop? Or would you define those as 'bad action movies'?

I'm sure you can find these movies on the internet, but isn't it kinda illegal to post download links here?

Are you just looking for Japanese movies?

If not, I have a couple I would like to recommend:

Million Dollar Baby It's a boxing movie that stars Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman and Hilary Swank. The movie was done so well, and Hilary Swank makes a pretty convincing boxer. Not to mention the relationship between Swank and Eastwood is actually quite genuine. Very worthy of the Oscar that the movie won.

The Boondock Saints I just picked this one up last year. Some Irish brothers kill mobsters all in the name of God. It's quite a violent movie and they drop the "F" bomb in that movie more times than I could care to count. Oh, and Willem DeFoe is downright hilarious.

The Last Samurai If you haven't watched this already, you should. I just watched it last week, and I regret not watching it in the theatre. Tom Cruise is basically overshadowed by the rest of the wonderful Japanese cast. Ken Watanabe should have won the Oscar that year. I also liked the relationship between Cruise and the wife of the guy he killed. Very few words are spoken, but it seems as if they fully understand each other. Not to mention that the music is quite beautiful to listen to. Oh, and half the movie is subtitled, so most will feel right at home. =)

Those are my recommendations. Sorry, I haven't watched anything foreign since Kung Fu Hustle (and I didn't really like it all that much either).

I don't want foreign, I want normal Hollywood movies that are good. Something recent is the best shot, as I usually have seen anything within the last 2-3 years and any recommendations before that is also good. The problem is that without direction I don't know what to choose, AK. Razz

I've seen Last Samurai, Boondock Saints, and Million Dollar Baby. I saw the newest Zatoichi, and I found it to be alright. I kind of liked the running gag between the swordsmen about Zatoichi's blindness.

Usually horror doesn't phase me, because I train myself to not get attached to characters in horror and war movies because their purpose is to die. Gozu slowly went surreal and I felt like I was going insane, Ichi was similar but simply because of the weirdness of the characters.

Audition's transition between a love story and horror made me forgo my rule of distachment which bit me in the butt when I the movie switched to horror mode. The monster in the bag felt unreal, and also the measured callous cuteness in the murderer was disturbing. It would've been fine if Audition didn't trick me into letting go of my distachment.

I also got a list of every movie I ever watched, so I can post that if you want. Razz

Some fine movies :

Gattaca http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119177/

It's a great sci-fi movie made by Andrew Niccol. About the future of the human race with the soon to be genetic modifications.

The Usual Suspects http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114814/

Interresting storyline. Twisted plot. This movie made by Bryan Singer (Spiderman) is pretty much a modern classic.

As with the new selected topic, I will mention my favourites and the like.

Favourite movies in descending order:
1. Sin City
2. Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai
3. Donnie Darko
4. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
5. Fight Club

Someone who guesses the general theme wins a cookie. And if they're cool enough, maybe an invite into Club A-S.

Now, 5 random movies you haven't heard about that are good:

Fallen - Most realistic devil/demon movie I've seen. Realistic in the sense of the Bible, not Constatine or the Exorcist. Pretty cool. Denzel Washington is in it and as many fans as he has, no one seems to know about this movie. Some very cool scenes in it.

Denzel's a cop who puts away a serial murderer, and before his death he says to him "I'll get my revenge" and speaks some crazy language. A few days later, a stranger approaches him and says "I'll take my revenge now", and speaks the same language as before. Denzel investigates and slowly it dawns on him that Demons exist and this one is going to toy with his whole existance.

Intacto - Mexican/American indie movie, so expect no one famous here. It is about Luck Stealers, those who have the ability to manipulate luck. If they want good luck, they take it from others and if they want to enforce bad luck, they take the whole room's or even their own supply. Most people don't even know about this ability, though there is a small gambling club that does.

They match luck stealers against each other to see how has the better power. If they win the annual luck stealer contest, they go to Las Vegas to challenge 'the Jew' for his entire casino chain fortune. Unfortunately, the Jew is the most powerful luck stealer as he was the only survivor in a concentration camp, plane crash, and plays russian roullette once a year against contestants.

How do they find contestants? People who survive accidents or bombings without a scratch. Those who continually win the lottery. A crook was caught by surviving a plane crash unscatched, and a police officer who survived a car crash with her husband and child killed enter these luck contests. He wants to become rich enough to buy his freedom, she wants to catch him. Who's the luckiest?

Series Seven - This is a low budget indie experimental "mockumentary". It is a drama that is done in mockumentary way because the movie is about in the near future television network's newest Reality TV is giving 12 people in a town a pistol and telling them that only one will walk away.

Pretty good as it feels real in a cheesy television way. If you're not some idiot who needs high budget all the time, you'll enjoy this one. It's cool because the whole thing is like watching Survivor or Bootcamp, except instead of voting off they're knocking off.

Session 9 - Another good low budget movie that kind of creeped me out. A group of renovators are doing their last job; it is their last job because they don't like each other. The last job is renovating a former insane asylum. They're offered extra cash if they do it really fast, but problems keep occuring and tempers rise...

A nontypical ghost story. You'll like it.

I am David - Touching tale about a little boy who escaped a German concentration camp. He grew up in the camp, so when he is out in the world everything he experiences he expericences for the first time. What a cat feels like. What a girl smells like. How trees sway when wind blows. It is a really good, light hearted movie.

So... Your favourites and personal picks?

Wow...

I just watched the movie, "The Usual Suspects." It had Kevin Spacey, Kevin Pollack and Benicio Del Toro in it, along with others from a well rounded cast. All I have to say is that I watched it and was left awestruck. Convincing to the very end (you'll know what I mean if you watch it).

Well, Kevin Spacey won an Oscar for his performance here. I must say, he is very deserving of it. Once again, watch "The Usual Suspects." Very good movie (and one I don't see on Tevesh's list). =)

EDIT: Crap, Frundock already wrote about it. How's that for reading the thread? =P Well, either way, I agree with him.

EDIT2: Hey, while you people are at it, go and watch "Brokeback Mountain." If you can handle the whole gay cowboy thing, you'll find yourself to be watching a VERY good movie. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhal play their roles superbly. I love these depressing movies. They just make for good entertainment.

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind - Jim Carrey proves that he can act once again in this movie, and if you have ever had a mismatched relationship, this movie is enough to move you to tears. The direction is original and interesting, and it's just two prostitues and a coke line short of a drug trip half of the time.

City Of God - Yes, it is a foriegn movie, but it is one damn good movie at that. It tells the story of a kid who is growing up in the streets of Rio, where drugs and gangs controlled entire towns. It may be a long movie, but it's one hell of a ride.

Shaun Of The Dead - Better than any zombie movie in the last 10 years or so, and it's funny to boot.
