Don't want to start anydebates about Windows vs. Linux here but I'm really glad that I'm using Ubuntu Linux whenever I see the problems that folks are having with things like antivirus and malware programs.
Are there any other Linux users out there, and what distro are youu using? |

I had a dual partition in my laptop with Windows XP home and Fedora Core 3. I had a lot of fun with Fedora, very stable system, really fast to load, and a good networking capability. Right now, I only have XP in the laptop, but if i get another computer, I will install it Fedora Core 4, and have my own linux box *drool*. |

Yeah I know what you're talking about. I started my exploration in the world of Linux with dualbooting Xp and RedHat 9 and went from there to Fadora Core 1 when I discovered Red Hat wasn't supported for free. THe one thing that kept me searching though was having to do the RPM shuffle whenever I added a new program and didn't have all the packages it needed to support it. I guess that's why I went with a Debian based distro because apt and it's frontend Aptitude fetches all the packages automatically.
I really like Ubuntu because it's absolutely free, easy to use (well there is a slight learning curve when your switching from Windows), has great support. I've long since deleted Windows from my box and use Ubuntu exclusively. |

I use linux at school if that counts lol... All of the computers in the Engineering complex have Fedora Core on them... Learning all of the appropriate console commands to compile programs is a bit of a hassel, but I can understand why Linux is much more of a programmer friendly environment. Linux is no Windows killer, it's definetely more hands on, but it's definetly an extrememly versatile platform... Thumbs up on the freeness of it as well ! |

Hi there, I'm very much a Linux user, I've been experimenting with several different distros and I've found I like anything based off of Slackware; namely Slax and Goblinx because they are the most user friendly and customizable.

I completey agree. I Intend to use SuSe 10.0 for the security server of our class network. By far Linux has windows beat in terms of virus safety.

I was beginning to wonder if there were any Linux users here since the tech area seems concerned mostly with Windows issues. Linux isn't as user friendly as Windows but I think of that as one of it's strengths because Linux does not automatically take in every spyware and virus just at the click of a mouse button the way Windows does.
So how about this, What are your favorite features/programs in Linux? I do a bit of web mastering and use both Bluefish and NVU to help with the XHTML and CSS side of things. When it comes down to fansubs I find that Gnome Bit Torrent fits seemlessly with Firefox, and on the graphics side I just finished up a Jigoku Shoujo wallpaper in The Gimp from screenshots taken off of Xine. As long as I'm mentioning my desktop I'm using Gnome with Enlightenment E16 as the engine instead of Metacity. Makes some really nice eye candy while keeping Gnomes functionality. |

| I like playing around with a lot of the live versions of linux, especially the "security" ones like Auditor. For me, Ubuntu, Xandros, and Mepis are a real joy to work with. Now if only linux could have some good gaming.... |

I used gentoo for a test project but had to change it to Suse 9.3 to get it working. Today my former school is using 20 of my fat Clients running a cut down 2.6 kernel on VIA EPIA M 10000 hardware with a custombuild case. I really appreciate the noiseless (+diskless) Clients, because they only consume 17-30watts and stay really cool thanks to my friend who patched the kernel with the VIA longhaul Function (similar to Intel speedstep). Such a setup of indipendent working diskless PCs is just not possible with any windows, so Linux was a very good choice and prooved that it ist really flexible and powerful.
But sadly i am forced to use windows a lot thanks to the manufacturer of my CNC milling machine who only has a windows software to program the CAD/CAM data.
In the past I have used Mandrake since 8.x, sometimes Suse and have also tried RedHat but that wasn#t better than Suse. I tried Debian once but it was really slow and i quickly changed to gentoo. I prefer Gentoo over Ubuntu for a LinuxInsider. For Newbies Suse is the right way to go, since it is easier to install than windowsXP and you get the best bunch of OpenSource Software out there on two DVDs with a very good manual. |

I skipped around a few distros myself but never felt at all like a Linux insider. It was a pretty good stuggle for me to climb up the learning curve. The first distro that I had the most success with was Libranet but it was a bit bloated and so I tried Ubuntu and I really liked that one because it was easy to install and it was a pretty minimal instal with only gnome and some of the essential programs. Then it was pretty much just apt getting all the programs and plug ins I wanted which is great if you have cable but I wouldn't want to try it with dail up.
I'm thinking about getting a new computer now, probably a Shuttle barebones kit. When I do I will probably go back to duel booting both Windows and Linux. I'll give windows about 30 gigs maybe and use the rest of the hard drive (at least 70 gigs) for Linux. After all the only thing windows will be good for is playing PC games. |

The only bad thing about Linux is that I cant play Ragnarok which is an .exe file _________________ Life is full of truth, but I'd rather live in lies. I know if I live in lies, everything arent for real, but if you say you love me, is it something I could feel? |
