Hi All.
Just read a great book that you must share it's papery goodness with the masses? Or just post your opinion, fav genre, fav book, least liked. You get the idea.
Before I get too carried away, I'll tell you a bit about me and my reading.
I have always loved to read. Give me a good book and the outside world may as well not exist. In the 3rd grade I was reading books that 8th and 9th graders would read.
I will read anything, however my favourites are scifi and fantasy. So my favourite authors are David and Leigh Eddings, Rayone E Fiest, Anne McAffrey and JKK Tolkien. However, I have also read Michael Chrieton, John Grisham, Kathy Richs, Patricia Cornwell, Jennifer Fallon. The list goes on and on.
I am not satified merely to read a book, I must own it. In my bedroom alone I have several hundred novels in two bookcases.
The only downside to being such a great lover of books and reading is that a single book doesn't last very long with me. I mean, you wait two years for a book to come out, only to read in two days flat. Harry Potter & HPB lasted me 7 hours. One day. The OotP took me 9 hours.
Read from that what you will...
I'll start it off.
Anyone a fan on Anne McAffery (Pern series, Talent series, Doona, Liveship - fans know what I'm talking about)?
Well, her son, Todd, has written two books continuing the Pern story. I am half-way throught the second, 'Dragonblood'. And I can say, it is a really good book. The author has really captured his mother's writing style really well, and his knowledge of Pern is reflected in his writing.
Even though I havn't finished it yet, I would recommend it. _________________ 'My hat! My hat! There's vomit on my hat!' - Sven Vollfield.

What?? I can't delete this post?
Damn, pay no attention to this.

Not sure how much books fall under the classification of live action entertainment, but that probably doesent matter too much. Anyways, i'll add my 2 cents:
I havent been doing much reading lately, but what i have done are more of teh "classics" i put classics in quotes because they're not really considered classical literature but more of just well known books (as well known as books can get nowadays)
anyways, before i went off on my tangent... i finally got a chance to read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury which i've been looking for but could never find. its a pretty good book, one of his earlier works, so its a pretty easy read and fairly simple. aside from that, i've been getting into Stephen King novels a bit
Oh, and just a bit of an aside, Grover: I dont think you should be triple posting, its easier on the mod's nerves if you just go back and edit your posts to fit whatever info you want to add _________________ Signature, what signature?

Hmm, they does look pretty bad when you see them like that.
It's not my intention to triple post just for gaining points as I have already have enough points for level 4 manga. I just sometimes hate reading really, really long posts and with me and books I can go on ad infintium so it was actually an attempt to try an keep each post as short as possiable
If you see them disappear, it will mean I have done something about them. _________________ 'My hat! My hat! There's vomit on my hat!' - Sven Vollfield.

Grover: i didnt mean to say that I thought you were triple posting to gain points (I saw your post count and such), just wanted to say that it seems that as a general rule mods don't like seeing multiple consecutive posts by the same person (at least that's how i see it). For seperating posts I'd probably just type a bunch of dashes or hit the enter key a couple times.
and from what I gather, i think you can only delete your post if it's the last one of the topic, otherwise only a mod can delete them

I'd feel bad if i didn't add anything at all relavent ot the content of this forum though, so:
I'm glad there are people who still read books now, visuals are great, but sometimes nothing beats a good book and...

I'm in the same boat as you, if I really get drawn into a good book, it doesent matter how long it is, if i really like it, i can read it from cover to cover in one sitting and then look for another.

Author Recommendations!
If anyone liked (note the past tense) Patricia Cornwell (Kay Scarpetta) but don't like how her last couple of books have turned out, I have found a replacement. Enter Kathy Richs. She writes in much the same genre as PC althought the style is very different (more 1st person than 3rd) and the main character is Temperence (Temp) Brennen. She is in the forensic field, but Temp gets called if the body is unable to be identified (read: too badly decomposed).
All of her books thus far have been great reads.
I think Deja Dead is her first title.
>>JetBlack, don't you hate it when you read a really good bood, but then the author takes ages before finishing the next one? HPGOF was an example of this. However the one that I am still waiting on is book 3 in Melanie Rawn's Exiles series. The first two were excellent, but I have now been waiting since 1997 (8 years and counting) for the next installment!! Now that is just being sadistic.
Another question: Does anyone have a favourite book that was made into a movie that sucked?
Mine is Sphere by Michael Chrieton. One of my all time fav's. Movie sucked. This is despite it having Sharon Stone and Dustin Hoffman star in it. The plot was changed just enough so that all the good bits got horribly twisted into demented caricatures of what it should have been. _________________ 'My hat! My hat! Yeah! Totally, I start to despise the author when that happens and I know another book is supposed to come out. or sometimes, htey just leave you with a "to be continued" and completely drop the series :grrr: its happened to me since before i can remember what i read probably starting with dr. suess books that didnt really have any flow to them and then onto the 'Redwall' serieswhich i read even though every one had basicly the same plot as the 5 before just with a change of scene (trouble, two groups go out, follow one group exclusively, group is in peril, other group comes to save the day...) and yet for some reason i just "had to" read the next one
as for books made into movies, i'd probably go with the idea "the original is best" and for the most part it holds true. the movies always leave something out or something from how I always saw it (i dont blame them though, its not easy to fit a several hundred page book into two hours without leaving out something)
anyways, some of the decent/good ones i recall are LotR and The Count of Monte Cristo although i havent ever had a chance to have the book long enough to actually finish it...
and, does sin city count? that was pretty good even with some iffy parts
and as for ones comming out, if sin city counts, then i kinda want to see v for vendetta even though it'll probably be a bad sfx film
oh, and thanks for posting your favorite books and authors, they'll probably help to get me out of my recent dry spell _________________ Signature, what signature?

You're welcome.
When a good book is translated into a movie, it is going up against your own imangination, experiences, thoughts etc, which makes your experience with the book unique. That is quite a formidable block to get past when the book has to go through writers, producers, directors and then finally actors before you see the result. Inevitably, things get lost, discarded, adapted with regard to how difficult/costly/time consuming a certin thing is. An example of this was the actual game of the Quiddich World Cup in the GOF. I was thinking 'Yes! Yes! Finally!...WTF? You have got to be kidding me!'. To be fair, for the movie to be faithful to the novel, it would have to be 4-5 hour epics. However, I would pay a lot of money to see that.
I agree that LOTR is the best adaption of any book(s) that I've ever seen.
More of my favourite books:
Clan of the Cave Bear - Jean M Auel
Airframe - Michael Chrieton (I will learn how to spell his name someday)
Eyre Affair - Jasper Fforde _________________ 'My hat! My hat! There's vomit on my hat!' - Sven Vollfield.
