| Reading this thread made me lose brain cells... after studying east Asian history for a term in college, I can safely say that most of you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. |

What does that have to do with anything? Are you Chinese AND live in China? No? Then hush. |

I wonder how East Asian history qualifies someone for judging economical potential, political tension, effects of globalization and western influence in the special case of China? I don't have the credentials either, but I'm still wondering... other than that, I agree, this thread says nothing (other than "China is a paradise on Earth") |

Because China falls into East Asian history and part of studying history is understanding a countries "economical potential, political tension, effects of globalization and western influence". Unless I've been learning history all wrong my entire life and you'd like to enlighten me on exactly what is and isn't allowed to be studied. |

At least I have spent more than 2/3 of my life there, and I've been keen to keep up with the news there...
FIne, I'll hush now... |

You still don't fall under the category of 'Chinese who live in China" so based on your own statement, you don't know what you're talking about. |

| My first quote of yours says that I agree with you, as probably none of us are Chinese living in China. I didn't mean anything else at all. |

| I think its because most of us (I'm guessing anyways) fall under the age group of 15 to 21 and dont actualy take asia or china as a specific course.....a lot of us have to rely on what is said on the news (which we all know is either propoganda, one sided, innacurat or just a bunch of crap).....yes....I agree...most of us dont know squat (I certanly know very little)........maybe this topic is just a little to advanced for some.....but it is an interesting one....atikiN, would you like to share you'r views? from a more educated point of view (not being sarcastic)... |

And I'm telling you that peoples knowledge of China has nothing to do weather they're Chinese or live in China. My professor was neither Chinese nor lived in China but I bet he knows more about the country then most people who live there. |

| So you mean if you study it from an outsider's point of view for quite a long time, you'd know more than the insiders do? Ok, if that's what you think... |

Economy: All countries go through economic booms and recessions periodically, that's how the economy works. China's economy had the potential to surpass that of the U.S. if it's growth continued at it's peak for another 50 years, however I believe it's already beginning to recess so that won't happen.
Technology: China isn't in the ball park of the United States when it comes to technology. Just looking at the countries space programs will show that.
Military: With the worlds largest population, China doesn't even have the worlds largest army... that honor belongs to India. As far as technologically advanced army... I think Japan has beat the U.S. in that (not 100% sure tho). Their little "home defense" squad managed to make some serious progress while under the United States umbrella.
China always was and always will be a very powerful country but I can safely say that it will not catch up to the United States in any of our lifetimes.
BTW, i don't claim to be an expert in the subject since studying the recent history of a number of East Asian nations for 6 months certainly doesn't qualify me as one, but there are a few basics that I do know. |

Yeah....I think I'v read somewhere that China once had one of the largest army of foot soldiers in the world, but that know it is only a glimps of its former glory.
China seems to be more interested in economic growth more than anything at the moment, this is great affecting the enviroment of the country (because of polution) which is eroding agricultural land and the factories and industries are using up much of their natural resources...this could greatly affect the countries future (I think). |

| They have the potential to be, they will probibly become one within the next 10-15 years. They have to complete their infrastructure upgrade first. |

| The guys that are saying China is a paradise...I don't know about that.... Many people/immigrants to America believe that America is a paradise. The whole you can start over golden opportunity thing. I know my parents did. They believed that they had a greater chance here, and they were also afraid of what would happen in 1998. As a matter of fact, when the British gave H.K back to China, many citizens left. So perhaps China won't all powerful now, but definitely towards the second half of this century....at the least. |
