I've got this Dell Inspiron 5160(It's crap I know) and it's ram usage is unsually high lately. Around 88-100% when running Azureus, msn messanger, aim, and firefox. I think it might be a virus or spyware, but I can't run a scan with the programs I have on the comp right now. The membership just expired with both. Anybody know some programs to scan, or maybe the reason my comp just filled up the ram so quickly?

Free Spyware removing programs. I advise you to use both of these programs to scan.

Wow..... I wonder how can you do that on a 512 MB RAM. Even with my 1 GB of RAM, I run all those applications and I used up 600 MB of RAM in order for it not to lag too often ^^;

But well, if you find this unusual, then maybe you may want to use Spybot or Ad-Aware. Both of them can be found in Download.com

Make sure that you update their definition file before scanning as the software comes with an old definition file.

That much RAM usage is normal, especially if you're using a BitTorrent client. That's what's eating up your RAM (and disk file usage which uses your hard drive because the RAM isn't big enough, which also slows down your performance). I myself have 512mb and have to limit my BitTorrent usage.

Well, since its only been happening lately it could be fair to say that you've been getting some spyware/malware. These are the steps I would do:

1. Scan your computer with Ad-Aware, Spybot, and MS-Antispyware

2. Scan for viruses, AVG is a free one

3. Clean up you garbage and registry with CCleaner

If that doesn't do it, maybe switching to BitComet will do! Very Happy

Anyways, all these programs are free and can be found at www.download.com

True, especially when you use Azureus. My record highest for using Azureus was 120 MB RAM used on Azureus. That was when I was downloading 12 torrents at the same time ^^;

yeah, i'm betting its Azureus

the only problem with Java based programs is that it runs Java...

What that means is that to run anything java, you have to run an entire java run time enviroment

they eat system resources like no other

try Ctrl+Alt+Delete, open Windows Task Manager and go to Processes tab,
look in program list and search for which one that consume most CPU's usage and mem's usage.
that program may has some problems. if it's not a system file and not in use, kill that process.

ps.open your firewall and scan for viruses and spywares often will reduce threat to your computer.

512 mb of ram is decent. Don't use azureus to save yourself ram and use spyware and adware and antivirus programs ppl mentioned earlier.

Is there a way to like limit the RAM used? i mean for a particular software, NOt tweaking the setting of the software but from the CPU point of view. Like Limit each application to 100Mb. Is there a way to do that?

Under Windows every application is allotted 4GB of RAM to use. There is no way to change that. Memory allocation is done by the Operating System, the CPU has nothing to do with it.

Back in the DOS days, you used to load a High Memory Controller (HIMEM.SYS), and then you would load your device drivers to High Memory (Extended Memory). Programs would use the low end of memory unless specified by the LH command. If your base memory ever got full and you had HIMEM.SYS loaded in your start up sequence, then programs would automatically load to High Memory.

With the introduction of Windows (even 16 bit versions of Windows), the concept of Virtual Memory was introduced. Virtual Memory is basically using a portion of your HDD as memory. Processes that are not being used, or have really low priority are set there. Windows XP configures Virtual memory automatically, if it sees it running low. You should NOT configure the Virtual Memory settings of your computer unless you know what you are doing.
