this was actually a very good manga and theres an anime of it too but it goes just like the manga so its pretty slow in my opinion. but the manga is really good... the stroy is unique and twists and turns are very common. a good read
I've just finished reading it, and I must say that it is, hands down, one of the best comics I've ever read.
You might consider the story slow, but, specially in this comic, is not about the destination but the travel itself. Just consider all the situations, the myriad of characters shown, all of which, even the secondary (and tertiary) ones have more depth than a lot of main characters in typical mangas, the detail of the drawings, the physical appearance of everyone in the story, Poppe's tales...
Gah, I could rant endlessy about this manga.
Now, onto the anime! (I've seen the first chapter and it looks great, and no, I don't mind if it's almost identical to the manga, I prefer it that way)

this manga seemed realy dull and I disliked the art work. i lost all intrest after about 2 chapters.
Then you didn't give it time for the story to take momentum. And as for the atwork, well, you really need to look about the character design. They may not be "Radical", but they are "Real". Not your average funky haired teenager and bigboobed underage girl ;p
I just finished it, and wow... to create something so complex and intricate with a fastidious hand just amazes me at the amount of detail and emotion put into this story. I totally agree with Pepius against lunahalo.

Monster is one of my all-time favourites.
The characters are so real. The story so compelling.
Did anyone else feel sorry for Eva when she was about to go to her gardeners place for Christmas - only to see the gardeners wife had come back. I felt genuinely felt sorry for her.
Or did anyone else feel really creeped-out about the childrens' story about the nameless monster/s trying to find a name. Brr. Creepy.
This manga made me think like very little literature has.
Despite reading the last chapter several times, it still leaves me a little confused.
Could anyone give your thoughts as to what happens in that last chapter? _________________ 'My hat! My hat! There's vomit on my hat!' - Sven Vollfield.
Just finished reading it, and... wow... the story is intricate, and so much detail is given to all the characters... when Grimmer died, I almost cried. almost.
The last chapter is rather interesting, with a few loose ends being tied up, as well as presenting a couple of questions left unanswered. And what's with manga and open- endedness? What are the twins' bloody names?! Ah well... can't do much about it, I guess.
Oh, and about the very end of it:
where do you think Johan went this time? To sow more discord? Or to lead a more peaceful life?
Personally, I'm more of the second opinion, and I think that the mangaka made Johan disappear to leave a bit of mystery at the end of it, as well as to bring the manga in a full circle, back to the beginning. Only this time, with Johan being a "jewel," not a monster.
