Do you think that I should watch with English dubs, or subtitles with Japanese audio? It seems there is alot of animosity for English dubs, and was wondering what your opinions are on the matter.

That's totally in your prefrence, I mean does it bug you to have to listen to English voiceovers. For Example, I prefer to watch Cowboy Bebop in English because I think the cast is excellent and I didn't have any anime hook up for about 8 years. I grew accustom to the voices and learned to deal with it. It all comes down to what sounds better to you and whether you want to read a lot of subtitling, or not. However, I would prefer to watch my anime in Japanese before listening to the English couterpart.

When I was younger, I would hate subtitles anime. I would prefer english dub that time. But over the years more and more anime would come out in subtitles, and by then I got used to reading it. When I try to go back to anime that have been dub it just doesn't sound right for some reason. I then watch another series that both have japanese/ english subtitles and dubs. Then I felt that each anime that has been dub kill the essence of its originality in many ways. Even though I don't understand Japanese but when I read the subtitles it seem like the expression of each charater are way more realistic then when they are dub in english. Therefore, I prefer to watch my animation with subtitle and origonal japanese language. Once you go subtitles you never go back to dub.

Actually it depends on the anime. If I would want to watch DBZ I'd watch it dubbed. If I wanted to watch Hikaru no Go, I'd watch it subbed. It depends all on the VA unless you take a point about editing. Well, torrents are free to get and if you want to watch an unedited anime, you'd have to pay for a DVD unless the unedit plays on television or you can just simply download the dub as well.

Either way that is if the dubbing was done nicely. But it feels more like your watching a Japanese Anime when it's in Japanese Audio and with english subtitles.

I always recommend using the Japanese Audio with subtitles. Mostly because that is the way the audio was meant to be and most subtitles are unobtrusive anyway. Even if the english voice acting is good (which it rarely is) I think that the original audio is a better way to convey what the authors of the anime wanted to convey on the personality of the characters (accents, catchphrases, moods, etc).

Besides, if you're smart you start picking up phrases and words here and there, so you actually end up learning a bit of japanese along the way. Very Happy

I prefer Japanese Audio with subtitles. English Audio sounds weird to me. I prefer reading the subtitles. I could also learn some simple jap in this way.

I prefer japanese audio with subtles as well because in most cases english dubbed voice actors are not in the same league as japanese voice actors. If you care to take a look at the japanese voice actors for some of your favourite anime you'll see that some of them a very famous. The japanese put alot of effort into their animation and hire alot of famous people. They can be singers, tv actors or had a long history as a japanese voice actor.

However in the case of english dubbed voice actors, I do not see that to be the case most of the time. I find that if you actually watch the anime both in english and the japanese then you will see that there is alot more expression in the japanese acting. Im not totally disregarding english dubbed anime because there has been some good dubs such as some of those by studio ghibli.

I could've swore there was already a thread for this topic....or is it just me

I don't really mind which language I watch as long as I can understand them. But preferrably I'd go with Japanese with subs. But not all anime are good in Japanese and a lot more are not good in English, but some are.

I would go for jap audio with eng sub. I used to see Pokemon with english audio, but after watching love hina and naruto with jap audio and eng sub, i never want to see a anime with english sub again ^^ It's more fun to try learning japanese.
