| if you havent watched the anime before it doesnt really matter. i find that if i watched an anime in japanese its just to hard to watch the english dubbed, but if i watch it english first its hard to watch the japanese dubbed. its all personal preference if you dont wanna read then watch the english dubbed although some things dont translate from japanese to english so you might lose a little bit (as long as they dont change the story like one piece what the hell is up with that?). |

| I would recommend english subtitles. The dubed I think takes away from the anime and ther mouths are just flapping around oddly if it's dubed snd the voice may not match and it could sound weird. I would go with enslish subs if you can and that is what most groups do. |

If I happen to catch an Anime in English Dubs then I stick to the Dubs, FMA on Adult Swim for example and Gundam Seed on YTV.
However, I usually prefer Japanese with Subtitles, the Japanese voices are usually better, and sometimes the anime is butchered when dubbed in English, take One Piece for example. _________________ "I won't become a memory" - Sephiroth; Final Fantasy VII : Advent Children

| well what I mean by dubed is when they do a voice over the japense speaking and they delete the original voice track so they can put in there own. With fma on adult swim they redid some of the animation so it fits the words. |

oh man, it's the sub vs dub debate again...
well, as I always say, I think people prefer whichever version they see first because that becomes the "real" version of the show to them... the second version just becomes the "other" version. Typically, I usually watch the english version first because I hate having to read and would rather enjoy taking in all the visuals and not having to worry about keeping up with the text. With BTs though, that's not a luxury I get, though I do enjoy the chance to learn japanese... plus the voices are usually more interesting.
Here's something I thought about recently though and have never seen in any of thse debate threads: how do we even know if the japanese voice quality is actually "good"?? Unless you are fluent in japanese, you wouldn't know if stress points are being emphasized correctly or the right emotion is being conveyed in a way that fits the context of the script (though you can usually tell by what is happening in the scene, but I mean, you don't know if they're overacting or underacting based on verbal cues alone).
The other day I was watching Shuffle! and I was getting the sense that the japanese VAs weren't really putting all of their effort into their lines. It sounded kinda sluggish to me, but without knowing exactly HOW the words should be spoken in the native culture, I am none the wiser. _________________

| I do feel that english dub kinda sounds inaccurate, with a very strange accent. That is really a big turn off for me and i do feel that the jap voice actors are doing a very good job. Maybe they may sounds sluggish in some anime, but i personally feels that english dub sounds very flat and even more sluggish, and it happens in both the 2 enlish-dubbed anime i watched |

In all fairness (and I should mentioned this above), there are some, if not many, anime series that have really good English dubs. Many threads ask for lists of series that fall in this category, but off the top of my head they include: Cowboy Bebop, Last Exile, Nurse Witch Komugi, Azumanga Daioh, Please Twins, Madlax, and so on. The whole debate is moot since it forces fans to decide amoung just two categories when in reality, each series needs to be decided on it's own. _________________

English Dubs tend to be very inaccurate.. But I do prefer Japanese animation with English dubs... reason for this being is so that I don't miss any of the actually animation that is in the show that they would normally take out if they put it in American.... _________________ "Those Eyebrows..." |

I like Japanese Audio with english sub better. Coz sometimes the voice of the voice actor doesn't suit the character or it can't catch the lips of the character. And japanese seiyuu(voice actor) are the best when dubbing an anime. _________________ If you ask a stupid question you'll get a stupid answer

| I prefer subtitle versus dub, since the japaness audio always or almost sound better than the dub for no reason at all it just the sound for the dub just doesn't seem right and do not fit the person so perfectly as the japaness |

I agree with what some of the other people in the post say, it just depends on how good the english is dubbed and if it's better (in my opinion Cowboy Beebop sounds much better in English) listen to it. But if it's the case like say One Piece, its better to just listen to the japanese version... This whole thing is a matter of opinion |

| Japanese is the way to go, most english voiceovers screw up the anime and u dont get the same feel. (Exceptions for english translated animes, such as FMA) |

| well, i prefere the english sub. the dubbed version (the ones i've seen) had horrible animation because they took out a good deal of the action, and the words do flow very nicely. There is also the serious matter of pronunciation. If you take Naruto for example, they realllllly botched up the names. |
