For me, there are only a few animes where I prefer the english dubbing. I personally dislike alot of English dubs because they change the mood of the anime. GitS the first movie for example, the english version seemed very melodramatic, whereas the Japanese didn't. A more extreme example of the same occurance in my mind is in Kino's Journey. It pains me to listen to the English voice-actors. They totally change the feeling. Kino would say something thats a simple fact in her mind, but the English makes it seem very profound or deep. The way an anime like that is conveyed hinges very delicately upon the way the voice is. On the other hand, I do prefer some dubbing or subbing. Cowboy Bebop was nice in English. I think Spike came across very well in English. In Japanese, the voice didn't really seem spunky. Now, this could just be a cultural thing, but imo, it wasn't as good in english. I also really enjoyed the English GitS SAC and 2nd Gig.

DBZ and Cowboy Bebop sucked in japanese >_>; definitely preferred them in english. Same with Vandread...i think that's the only anime i've downloaded first from the net, which i prefered in english.

As long as the story remains intact dubs/subs doesn't really matter to me, I can watch either. But when you take say Cardcaptor Sakura or Sailor Moon for example the Dub totally butchers the story, especially Cardcaptor Sakura . They omit episodes, drop stuff that they don't like, etc. Some dubs just ruin a great series too like Azumanga Daioh. In those cases it's Sub all the way. In general though Dubs have come a long way since they first started doing them.

If its a popular series, like Bebop, the dubs are usually ok. However, if it's a lesser known series, or, at least in America, the dubs are usually very fake. I just saw a dubbed episode of Guyver, and the voices sound terrible.
Also, I can't stand the Americanized way of pronouncing Japanese names, with the extended vowels and stuff.

So, Subs all the way for me.

Personally, I did like some of the old dubs like Bebop (which seems to be said alot) because their voices acutally messed with the charecter. It seems like the people who dub the new Anime like Bleach and Naruto just pass on anyone who wants the job. I prefer the japanese version with english subs. At least when someone is struggling against something or got scratched in the face it actually sounds like the person is struggling or got scratched in the face, not like their constipated or something.

I never liked subtitles when I was a kid, now that I can read... well better anyways, I do prefer Subtitles on Japanese Audio its all up to what you prefer I suppose, English just dosnt do it much for me anymore, mostly for the reason that most of the good anime's arnt english yet.

Well for some reason i prefered english subbed... raw if i could understand everything (atm just bits and pieces), for some reason when i hear the english voice over, the voice acting doesn't match up to the japanese ones... especially comparing bleach from cartoon network to the subbed japanese counterpart.. the difference in voice acting is huge.!!

I've always preferred subtitles over dubs since most of the time the Japanese culture kinda sounds weird in English and doesn't sound right.

(watch the first episode of the dubbed Air TV and listen to the "uguu~" -_-)

but it's really up to personal preference. Razz
