This series unexpectedly turned out to be one of my favorites of the 2003/2004 season. The first 1/3 of Gilgamesh was a bit weak, but the rest of the show more than made up for it.
The ending 2 eps combined to be one of the better conclusions I have seen in my anime watching life. It reminded me alot of Rahxephon and Evangelion for obvious reasons but far more concrete than either of those two.
*Spoilers Below*
So for anyone who actually watched this show...what did you think of the ending? Did killing the young countess at the end (and the smile) signify that the new world would be created with the same sort fear, malice, and arrogance that the past world had lived under? I just fouind it odd when she emerged from the shell, as opposed to the unborn child...or was the child supposed to be a clone of her? bah ;o

Personally I found the ending contrived and rather trite.... grasping for straws you could say. It tried much too hard to create a conclusion that can easily be equated to that of earlier, greater works. There was nothing new, no new twists... and it was delivered poorly from a standpoint of dramatics and overdramatics.
At best the series is merely inadequate... at worst, it's pure, unadulterated drivel. _________________ You can't hold no groove if you ain't got no pocket.
I'm not exactly sure what anime series in the same genre as Gilgamesh have good endings in your opinion. I'd say Eva had a nice ending, but that's really the only one that comes to mind. I personally found Gilgamesh to be very intelligently created (with references to mythology and wave theory physics)
I agree that there was nothing groundbreaking about this series, though I did find the material more interesting than most animes out there. That is a matter of personal taste of course. I personally didn't find DNAngel to be worth watching, so we may just be bound to disagree on anime styles.
