| I don't know about everyone else, but I've come to believe that the fansubbed versions are much more well done than the actual licensed versions that I have bought and seen. It just seems like the licensed versions take a lot out of the dialogue (I'm talking about the subtitles and in some cases even the english dialogue for the licensed versions compared to the fansubbing). What are your opinions? |

the japanese voices are more passionate. I hate the monotone voices that are just all wrong in English dubs.
Anime ruined through English dubbing:
Naruto
One piece
There are more examples, these are off the top of my head |

i really dont htink theres a contest. Fasubbs are overall better. THey actually explain sum stuff in those annoying little captions.
I admit there are a few good dubbs like Evangelion and Trigun.
Fansubbers usually do a better job at subbing than the actuall DVD. Its not so bad when you've downloaded an anime and its crap casue it really not a bi deal, but after youve shelled out however much to buy the DVD and its crap, it pisses the shit out of me.

I agree wholeheartedly willy_383. I mean fansubbers have most likely watched a lot of anime, and have a passion for Japan and japanese culture. I'm sure many professional subbers do as well. The differense is that the fansubbers often seem to try to translate in such a way that the normal person can understand whats going on if theres a cultural difference. Translator's Notes are crucial in some animes. Proffessional subbers seem to just translate verbatim. If they do edit the script it sometimes just makes it worse. This may be do to a producers final say, or someone else who is not familiar with the cultural differenses making the edits. Either way fansubs just have more heart put into them then licensed dvds. _________________ "No! I want it American style. While I agree with everyone about the quality of translation being better and somewhat more educational in fansubs, I always try to buy the licensed dvds when/if they actually come out in North America. First off, the visual quality is better (i.e. it's suited for watching on the larger screen of your television), secondly you don't have to worry about having a computer that can handle playing the video without any glitches... although that might still count under #1. And thirdly, you're giving money to companies who provide an invaluable service by bringing some of the best entertainment from Japan and making it available to the rest of the world.
While I agree that fansubs tend to capture the true essence of the anime in question, I always try to support the companies that not only help recruit new otaku, but were also responsible for my own induction into Japanese fandom.
imho,

| fansubs are better. wen licensed animes come up, whoever licensed them usually dubs the voices. and wen the voices are dubbed, it really ruins the anime. also, for naruto on cartoon network, they dont show any blood whatsoever. i know its meant to "protect" little kids but w/o blood, it really ruins things |

I do agree that fansubs are done much better..more attention to detail and interesting fonts, that's for sure. But then it comes down to the fact that fansub subtitle is overwritten into the file, while licensed version has the subtitle in different place, so it's different, isn't it? But that's not the big thing..the thing is, licensed anime would have to ..you know, try not to offend anyone, etc, so they'd often change the language a lot. There are also no notes on culture/custom that comes up either.. and I definitely hate English dub--i'd rather not understand the whole thing that listen to the crappy voice-over.
but I voted licensed, simply because..well..I like to have an actual disc with me to collect. That alone counts more than anything for me. |

| I like fan subbed. American crap usually uses the same voices for everything and the voices sound like crap. |

corporate subtitles are as basic as they can make them. IMO its because they want to keep them as simple as possible for people that dont know anything about the jap culture.
they try to make them simple and understandable for the audience because lets face it, if they laddened the subtitles with too specific a translation, then the audience is gonna get confused about whats going on in the few seconds that they have to think about what they just read.
=i know i do :3=
fansubs however are not conformed to any regulations. meaning anything goes i guess.
fansubbers have a passion for translating the anime, whereas companies want to get it out onto the market asap im my opinion.
and if u didnt know, not having a passion for the things u do aint gonna get u far.
well, all this is my opinion after all. _________________ [img:567:138:151453bb6b]http://www.anime-source.com/upload/uploadFiles/wahagifsda.gif[/img:151453bb6b]

I like fansubbed better because duebbed animes sound pretty corny.
I like it to be legit. _________________ Current Anime:Gantz and Love Hina
