As some of you may have noticed a danish newspaper had some satiric images of the prophet Muhammed drawn, which has caused several arabic countries to boycott danish goods and make demonstrations against Denmark, like burning flags and such stuff. This has pretty much spread like a wildfire to the rest of the world and other european newspapers had the same images in them.

As you can see, if you look at my location under my avatar, I live in Denmark, so I'm at the heart of this conflict.

I'd like to know peoples opinions about this situation. No bashing here. I don't know how many muslims are here, but I'd like to hear their point of view too, just like everyone elses'.

If anyone's interested I will post the danish point of view later.

I don't think that freedom of speech covers the sort of degredation that watching other people make a mockery of a tenent of one's religion causes.
However, I do believe that the nations boycotting are making too big a deal over it. If they had asked for an apology, given their reasons, and asked that the satire not be reprinted, they might have gotten a better response. Boycotting makes people defensive and starts breaking the disagreement into an us/them situation where Muslims can feel that they are being oppressed, and free speech advocates can feel that Muslims are trying to force religous conformation on them.

i have seen lots of satiric drawings and editorials... worse than that muhammad drawing... but i guess the publicity of it kinda got out of hand... and thus almost the whole muslim community hates denmark now... oh well...

It's not just that it's satire. It's against one or more of the tenets of Islam to draw Muhammed. To the Muslim community, those satiric images are blasphemy, and I would suppose that they see Denmark as defending the blasphemy.

ofcoz Danish newspaper made mistake there (this is some-what ethical and moral question) but on the other hand, why are muslism biting the hand which feeds them?
Numerous immigrants are living in Europe, taking advantage of oure social politics and now they demand apology for something that is legal in that countrie.

There's also a thread in Club A-S about this:

Thank you for informing us, but I for one can't post there. It is an interesting thread to read, though.

Despite what they're doing, I'm definitely with the Muslims on this. Unfortunately, President Bush of the United States has caused a lot of anit-Muslim sentiment with his treatment of the issue of "insurgents" in Iraq. If the drawing were of Jesus and considered sacriligeous by Christianity, the US and Europe would be in an uproar. However, responding to Europe's insensitivity by attempting to anger Israel isn't the right response. If they must make a point, they really should use Christianity, because that's what most of the people in Europe who have a religion believe in, and so is better for bringing understanding to the other side.
But really, they shouldn't be doing it at all. I'm starting to slide towards the belief that some Arabic countries are looking for an excuse for war, oil price changes, or something.

Well on the one hand...its a cartoon and might not have been done out of maliciousness...but ppl do have to be carefull of what they do or say...(especialy when all this anti-muslim and war stuff is going about at the moment)......so I'll agree that Muslims should be angry at this...(thought I have not seen it so do not know if it was realy offencive [they refuse to show it on tele and news sites]).

On the other hand...many cartoons have been done poking fun at many different things and havnt been considered outrageous in anyway...(I have seen countless ones of christianity or the Pope)....so this sort of stuff should be taken lightly (but then again...the Middle-east and the Muslim religion dosnt share this sort of view of things)...and this buisness of boycotting...just wont work...Denmark wont lose much money from that...

But all this hatred going around at the moment...an ill omen I say...an ill omen.......it wont end well....

Actually the newspaper used censorship. They had drawings of Jesus and the pope, but chose not to publish them, because they were afraid it would offend some of the christian readers, which could hurt the sale.

I think this is a bit ironic.

I think its well justified, its not like US never poked its nose into other people's business

Example: Blah blah blah dictator bad, blah blah blah bombs, blah blah blah you're bad, you can't have nukes.

So yah, if US can bomb other nations just because they dislike their government type, why can't Muslims bomb embassies because of drawings? Same crap, different bucket.

Well i think the drawing is a political thing" freedom of speech" but i think it should of not been published . Like for example " Jesus , Pope Jean paul the 2nd and such , they also tried to make fun of this but good thing they didn't it will offend people but instead they picked on the Muslims prophet.

But i think the muslims and the americans are alike , finding a way to bomb stuff / hate eachother / more terror/anger whatever you wanna call it.This is just another excuse to make more money.. plain and simple WAR/DESTRUCTION = MONEY you people should know this.

But the Muslims have the right to be angry at this , it was just plain wrong.

Not to mention, there IS NO freedom of speech... Try saying you've got a bomb in the airport, lets see how far FoS will get you.

What the hell is FoS?

Saying you have a bomb is considered threatening other people, which is illegal. However drawing a bomb and showing it to people in the airport is legal.

FoS = Freedom of Speech, I was too lazy to type it all out.

And there're a hell lot of things you can't say, walk up to a black man, and call him a nigger, you might end up in court for being a racist, walk up to a girl, tell her she's fat, you might end up in court, walk up to ANYONE, say the wrong thing, and you might end up in court.
