PS3- Why cant SONY change their name of their consoles anyway? Even M$ and Nintendo changed their names of their consoles anyway, you can call the Xbox 360 X360 or 360 for short, the Nintendo revolution calls their console the Wii.
And its alot better to recognized than the old PS brand, if there'll be another new console will SONY call their console PS4?
Marketing. People will buy models that have higher model number. For example, the Pentium 4. Everybody wants the Pentium 4 over the Pentium 3. People will buy a 2.0Ghz Pentium 4 over a cheaper AMD 1.6Ghz because of the number while in reality, the AMD 1.6Ghz is actually the one that gives better performance.
People will know that the PS3 will be better than PS2 because of the name. And Microsoft was afraid of this because their next-generation console would be called Xbox 2. 3 is bigger than 2 so people will tend to buy the PS3 more than their Xbox 2. So they renamed it to Xbox 360. Not only so it could compete with the PS3, but with the Revolution as well (360 degrees is one revolution). The name is saying, "Hey, look. Our console is the best because it's a mix of PS3 and the Revolution. You don't need to buy their console and buy ours instead."
Nintendo changed their name to Wii is a marketing stance as well. Wii sounds very much a friendly name and Nintendo is trying to get everyone to play their system. Also, if people look at the name Revolution, they may think "360 degrees" and may look into Xbox 360 that has already been in the market for quite a while now. Nintendo is probably afraid that people will think that there is nothing new to the Revolution.
But I think it goes with the tradition as well. The 'X' in PSX stands for experimental. And then the numbering goes on. I don't think they'll stray off from this idea. Ken Kutaragi has already started his plan for the PS4. I think he said something about downloading the games online instead of having another CD-based media format.
I prefer the Nintendo Wii, it's a lot cheaper than the other systems.

The PS3 is crazy..., on ebay ppl selling it 4 to 6 times the retail price!

wow, thats a great analysis, you seem to know a lot about marketing stratigies, i alway wondered about the name of the xbox 360 (but never bothered to dig it up), i didn't like it much at first but now i don't mind it..

you know what's even more crazy? some people will actually buy those
i won't be suprized if many defective units were descovered among the units sold at launch, and if someone baught a defective ps3 for $2500 then he/she should feel like the biggest sucker on earth..
And you know whats more crazy? The 360 box, I MEAN, THE BOX actually auctioned at e-bay and you know what? It sold for 750 dollars. Do you believe that?
BTzW, thats months before the 360 launched at the market... I just watched it on Late Night with Jay Leno...

I don't wanna stray off from the topic, but I also don't want to leave you unanswered. And I'd hate to disappoint you but my answer is much rather of an opinion ^_^; So I can't tell you which one is better. But I'll admit that I prefer AMD over Intel. Personal preference >.>; Maybe you could start a new thread with the relating issue or do a research on your own if you're up to it .

yeah its off topic but i have to say this; yeah AMD's high end processors are (as tests proved) better performers than intels P4 series, thats it now going back to topic..

thats not too far from ps3's normal price, i think that when the 360 was released there wasn't a severe shortage else it's price whould've been upwords of $1000
Just asking, how many days more before the release of the PS3 and the Wii? I wanna see the preview of what they can offer even I didnt personally seen or touch it...
Humorously enough, SOny is famous for paying off the media to show them lots of support. For exampe thay paid graffitiers to write messages about how good the psp is, for some strange reason, ALL of the sunday ads only mentioned the PS3, which many Sony employees spilled was a payoff. Talk about low tactics.

Umm... That's what you call marketing and advertisement? First of all, it's the release of the PS3 and the Wii [in the states]. Isn't overshadowing the one year old Xbox360 suppose to happen? And it's not like Microsoft didn't try. From a newspaper called metro(UK), 41 ads of the 56 pages were ALL Xbox360s. You can see them here... Microsoft already had their turn. It's the other players turn to shine. Actually, Microsoft has the money to outshine them, but apparently they find that they don't need to because of the shortages of the competitors' units. And most likely problems were about to come, which they have.
Im asking again, is the first release of the PS3/Wii a blockbuster? And is there a review of the games in these systems especially their games already? Sorry for asking...
